Let's try this out. It would be great to have a quality general where we can genuinely discuss combat sports - MMA, kickboxing, bareknuckle, wrestling, etc. - without the threads being flooded & diluted by lonely losers.
No UFC this weekend, but Beterbiev will likely be serving up a spicy heem against Yarde in the boxing world in a few minutes.

i overheard my kb instructor mention different divisions in the sport, but do they only apply to my country (the netherlands)? or is this some top secret information only instructors/coaches/trainers possess?

Who do y'all got in the Izzy/Pereira rematch?
Izzy is basically down 3-0 in 3 very competitive fights. I think we need to see Izzy come in with a more aggressive boxing style and mix in his top game better for him to win. Pereira just needs to keep shoring up the TDD and maybe work on his instincts when rocked/tired (hands come way down and little head movement).

I think Pereira checking the low kicks and landing his own low kicks played a big role in reducing Izzy's mobility. When he was fresher, Izzy was pretty good with the footwork and very good with hand-fighting and intercepting in the clinch and close range. By the last round, he wasn't really doing any of that.

It's a high-injury-risk technique that no reputable gym is going to allow folks to throw with full power, similar to leg locks in BJJ. As long as you trust your gym culture, which you'll know if you do in the weeks and months before you start hard sparring (if they let you hard spar right away as a beginner, that's very likely a red flag), then you can be confident that your sparring partner isn't out to hurt you.

kek that's pretty based
most if not all gyms offer at least 1 free class. I recommend trying out a few places and seeing where you feel most comfortable.
one thing to look out for as you plan your visits is who might be teaching. some gyms are small and have the same instructor for beginner/advanced, or just a few instructors dedicated to beginner and advanced, respectively. other places have several instructors that rotate between all the classes.
in the case of multiple instructors for the beginner classes, look up the instructors if you can and make sure you go on the day that the most veteran instructor is teaching as he is most likely the one responsible for setting the culture of the class/gym for that group of students.
t. trained under Matt Serra, had like 8-12 instructors ranging from purple to black belts

Anyone have any experience with getting bullied at a gym? I study BJJ and I’m a likeable guy but I can be a bit sarcastic. Anyways I have no issues with anyone in the gym but these three friends that come in together are always trying to stick their fingers up my ass. They call it an “oil check” and get mad when I tell them to stop. They don’t do it to anyone else as far as I can tell but they get really aggressive and do it to me when I get a better position on them during a scramble. It’s starting to hurt me as they are fitting multiple fingertips in there. Any advice is appreciated.

I told the instructor but he just waves it off and says I’m exaggerating. Am I at risk of an infection or anything? I have more class tomorrow and I swore to god that they wouldn’t get the better of me but I honestly don’t know how much more I can endure here. I paid for a year of classes but it’s not worth the accrued damage to my asshole from these fucking guys. Anyways please some real advice would be appreciated. Been seing this image with a quote of Dana talking about how Mexico is going to be the next Brasil in MMA
Saying how soon we won't be talking about just one champion, but many
Personally, i believe him but i reckon it will be a long long long time
We are very into combat sports over here but Boxing and Football are still the main stuff, Yair didn't even get half the reaction that Brandon has been getting and no one knows Alexa nor Irene
And after them there's only Rosas, Loco Aguilar, Jauregui, Zellhuber and all of them are barely UFC level
Without figures there's no interest, without interest there's no development or new students
What do you fags think?

I think whenever he's saying shit like that, it's because he's trying to inflate numbers in a market. I don't know how accurate it is, but I've seen several people say that Mexico is one of the last bastions of reliable PPV sales in general, relative to people just pirating a stream. So I'd put my money on his putting his money on it.

I think the introduction of the PI will at the very least facilitate more talent. Mexicans are known for being extremely hard workers and having toughness & grit, and those kind of intangibles matter more in MMA than probably any other sport. Yair and Brian Ortega are very talented, both are contender-level and could be champs on their best days. Moreno is of course great.
I think we need a Mexican that can truly lead the nation, though. Then again, Canelo has no charisma and the entire country follows him so maybe it's just about being dominant for a while. The sad thing is the UFC probably doesn't want someone to be too much of a superstar because they gain too much leverage during negotiations and take control away from the front office.

Speaking of which, as much as I like seeing MMA occasionally in a ring, grappling only matches in a ring are fucking retarded. I know they've got Kelly on a hardcore push, but a ring just has all the bad parts of open mat without the space to move.
Anonymous at Sat, 25 Feb 2023 20:22:58 UTC No. 137093

I guess the good thing about the ring is it does force dominant control grapplers to attack from more angles since they can't rely on pinning against the cage for added leverage. I kind of liked how Suleiman kept resetting Kelly/Miura yesterday, which led to a couple of reversals & scrambles.
Another way of looking at it is what kind of evolutions do the Makhachkala boys make to their games if they can't rely on the cage for mat returns and pinning?

I see you brother, first thing I noticed is you gotta get off those heels. stay on your toes seriously, at least always be on your front toe, but both is ideal. you do this to help you bounce more, the more you bounce the easier its gonna be to move around, pop your punches, take hits, and the more your head is naturally gonna move and you want your head to always be moving, never keep it in the same spot I learned that the hard way. also loosen up in general bro shadow boxing, and all combat is felt in the flow. when you loosen up you'll be faster and smoother. keep working man, just stay on your toes and move that head around more. also spar. the only way you are gonna get good at fighting is by often and consistently sparring. Godspeed!

I can see what the instructor can do and it’s very humbling to see the power of Akido; this guy is like 50 but he would kill most strikers. Anyone else here practice Akido? I’m ready to coming 100% now to this and I’m feeling great!

Yes, but with caveats. You have to adopt an "old man" style of wrestling, ex. shooting from a clinch rather than 20 feet away like someone who's been wrestling since they were 4 years old can do.

you're kidding, right? from what i understand, oil checks aren't a thing and are strictly forbidden in combat sports. when i do see it happening in mma, for example, the fighter gets a warning from the ref. while butt drags are a thing in wrestling, they are principally different, as you only grab the fleshy part of the buttocks - the cheek - for added leverage to push your opponent forward while they're turtling to prevent being pinned. an oil check, ie inserting your finger into someone's anus without their consent, would be sexual assault.

hypothetical scenario
let's say i can use magic to split myself into 9 different people
and let's say all 9 decide to train a different martial for 5 years
and then after that 5 years, we recombine to fight as an mma fighter
what 9 martial arts should this man have learned? i know this sounds like a thoughtless and useless question, but believe it or not, it would really help me out knowing this for reasons i'm ashamed to say. also, you can't have all of them train the same thing. each one has to be different.

Or, practice your striking, and let a couple hard ones land, just by accident. Nothing says to ease up, like getting your skull rattled.
Honestly though, if you can't speak to your instructor about this (and try doing so again), find another gym if you can. Your one sounds like shit.

I'm having my first ever light contact kickboxing competition this week-end, I was informed by it just a bit earlier during the training, which is a bit surprising but I think I'm okay with it
I can reach the weight and have a good cardio without problems and I put my trust in the coach that my technique is ready as well (he has experience he can be trusted), but do you guys have any psychological tips or warnings ? It's still quite surprising and I fear I'll end up too stressed and end up losing

Well, I lost on the first fight, I don't know, maybe I overestimated the "lightness" of the contact, though, the guy had twice a "last warning" for intensity and I spent the rest of the day with a slight limp from the thigh kicks, we didn't even salute, still I know that's cope and I feel like shit. I lost my composure and when I did unleash more it ended up being more out of frustration, without enough control to make a difference
I guess that's how first fight goes

There used to be a board called /asp/ (alternative sports). It was a cool chill board for niche sports that were too slow to last on /sp/. Since it was mostly for hobbyists and enthusiasts, the posts tended to be higher quality as more posters knew what they were talking about.
Then Hiroshimoot decided to exile pro wrestling to /asp/ for some unknown reason after they shat up /sp/. Predictably, /asp/ went to shit as well as pro wrestling posters vastly outnumbered and outposted the native /asp/ies. Years later Hiroshimoot realized it was a bad idea and made a separate pro wrestling board. In his infinite wisdom, instead of leaving /asp/ as is now that it was free from the pw menace, he decided to close the board down and make a new board: /xs/ extreme sports. Nobody's really sure what qualifies as "extreme," so the board is mostly shitposting and is a shadow of what /asp/ was.

/sp/ seems to still be boying Tony in live threads, but who knows who's actually being serious. I really don't think Paddy is very good, and I'm still concerned Tonys about to wind up worse than Diego Sanchez after this. The Goggins thing might have made sense during a long break period. It's lunacy as prep.
Anonymous at Mon, 4 Dec 2023 00:12:12 UTC No. 178038
>>178003
Pretty much my thoughts. On the one hand Paddy is about as overhyped and overshilled as Rhonda Rousey was when Dana was committed to promoting the UFC owning their own Wonder Woman. On the other hand the way Tony is going about training is about as ass-backwards and memed as I can imagine it. Fucksake the last thing Tony needs at his age is MORE cardio and knee/mind-mind breaking exertion. Frankly the whole thing makes more sense as an attempt by Goggins to promote himself/Tony to prove he still has it than covering the bases of what Tony should work on to avoid taking damage he frankly can't afford to anymore, it's just damn unfortunate it isn't taking place after the fight.
There just isn't a winner in this one. Either Paddy proves he has what it takes to beat a guy so far past his prime he's into delusions, or Tony gets one last hurrah before, realistically, he retires.

The cop-out answer is "all of them" since every legit martial art is good at some stuff and not good at other stuff by virtue of specialization. Even martial arts that aren't directly good at full contact fighting (points karate, tai chi, etc.) can be useful as a supplementary art.
