🧵 Muay Thai Sparring as newb

Anonymous No. 149101

I’ve been to one Muay Thai class (free trial,) and was weirded out by the padwork and shadow boxing especially.

I don’t like it and I’m confused as fuck when shadowboxing.

Can I just skip straight to sparring? They have sparring classes time blocks and shit. I’m used to bjj or wrestling where you actually do the sport.

hitting pads is a good way to get reps in and practice combos, but shadow boxing is just a way instructors eat time in the class
run laps, shadow box, jump rope, oh look I've just eaten 15 minutes in my 1 hour class which I started 5 minutes late and will end 5 minutes early
this is industry standard. It's meant to be a time sink so you take more classes

tell the guy to go really hard, only way to learn

Bruh. The academy has one glory world champion, would that translate at all to their lessons?

How do you get good? Is it genuinely just sparring and practicing combos on a wall or someone’s handpads?

Yeah dude, in fact you should tell the instructor that his class is weird and dumb and that you want to learn the sport by doing the sport. I’m sure he’d be impressed by your initiative and take you to spar immediately.

the general public doesn't get the same training as fighters do
fighters get 1 on 1 time with the coach, the normalfags are just there to pay the rent so the pros have a place to train

a lot of people think they go to a gym with pros and somehow through osmosis they'll acquire great abilities too, but that's really not how it works. If you're just a hobbyist they're not going to pay attention to you, your development doesn't mean anything to them.

My god, so many trolls.
Dear OP, if you want to get really good you better talk to the trainer to do personal, the commercial class is for those who just want to practice, you can get good with it, just don't expect to be polished quickly.

Padwork, bagwork and shadow are fundamental tools for learning and give the coach the opportunity to observe what he is doing wrong. As for sparring, it should be light, heavy sparring only sporadically, unless you want to get hurt if you get nothing in return.
