Is savate an unarmed combat style, or an armed one? Many savate kicks are only viable if you wear boots, specially steel toed boots as many kicks are given with the toes. Seeing how this piece of equipment is necessary for it's viability, does this mean that it's a weapons art, with steel toed sailor boots turned into weapons? Karate has "weapons" that are repurposed tools, so maybe I thought with savate, you could say something similar.

Armed, so is boxing/mma
The data is robust on that, theres an order of magnitude more KOs during fights with gloves vs bare knuckle
The amount of horse power you can put out repeatedly when your hands are wrapped and padded is absurd

The equipment used in mma is minimal.

Bracing the wrists and padding the knuckles is significant
People knew how to box during the 90s, the punch output in early mma was nothing compared to what it is now

IMO the taping underneath is the real line on it being equipped. That's what really seals the fists into clubs. Sure, they're not a cestus, but that reinforcement on the structure of your hand does more of the work than the glove.
