Is height/reach really the best build for MMA/fighting in general

There are pros to being a manlet but yeah probably it's better.

As long as you're not 6'4" fighting lightweight and shin kicking.

Shorter is an advantage for grappling; lower center of gravity makes you more resistant to throws and takedowns as well your leverage is better than someone taller than you. Not to mention it'll be more difficult to submit you since your appendages aren't as exposed.

HOWEVER, a taller grappler will have a reach advantage and you'll have some problems doing escapes from them. Plus your guard game has to be REALLY good and dynamic.

In terms of striking, you're gonna have to evade and use good head movement. Mike Tyson is proof that a shorter man that knows how to bob-and-weave can negate a taller fighter. Remember, they have to punch down and it's gonna be hard to draw a bead on you if you're playing Space Invaders with your upper body. Same with Joe Frazier, his slip-and-move pressure fighting made him very hard to hit.

Your worst enemy will be someone with VERY strong clinching and neck-wrestling with knees. And knows how to sprawl and brawl so you can't hip toss them to escape. So you would have to be a Muay Matt against them: low kicks and heavy hands with some Muay Souk (elbow specialist) in case the clincher closes in. You have to target their jaw and face with elbows and utilize dirty boxing (especially shoulder strikes). Foot sweeps and trips are also a must.

In MMA rules in top game tall grapplers win. See legends of grappling game F Werdum or Shinya Aoki, who are tall for their weight. When aiming not only for takedown but also submission long limbs become important tools, to create longer standoff, or wrap around opponents body parts further to attain better leverage and control. Top grapplers wrestle like boas. Longer boa wins.

Yup, which is why I said your guardwork has to readily adapt to them. And yeah, longer legs to get their hooks in and trap your limbs is what they're going to try and do.

I'm 5'11 which isn't too short, but my best sparring partner is 6'3 and very long legged. I've got a longer torso than him and outweigh him by 15 pounds (200) to his 185. Rolling in the beginning was a real struggle because he did just what you described as well as what I listed. His top game also smothered me so I had to remain calm and not get caught. I remember the 1st time I got him in a neck crack after nearly giving up earlier. It was my first win in training and I was exhausted.

The most important thing to have for any kind of fighting is the warrior spirit. If you don't have that then you're going to lose.

That's definitely a must. You need to have confidence in your ability and not be afraid to dig deep.

But you gotta have ability and conditioning to back it up.
