All pro wrestling is and was proto mma, why single out Japanese? You could even say mma is pro wrestling but real.

No, Brazilian Vale tudo was proto-MMA. They were doing MMA fights with minimal rules like 50 years before UFC and Pancrase, competing to prove how one style of fighting was superior to the rest. This is where the Gracies got famous and where their family challenge came from. Foreigners, ie. Kimura, sometimes went to Brazil to test their skills there, typically by invitation. UFC was born because Rorion Gracie wanted to do the same thing as Valetudo but in America. That's why Royce was brought in and why some people say that early UFC was rigged in favor of the Gracies.
