I did wrestling as kid, but due to father's presure, lol. Forgor most stuff I learned besides maybe some basics

basics are good enough, but practice them to stay sharp
it only takes a little bit of wrestling skills to be a lot better than everybody that doesn't know any

kickboxing is great, but in a fight people will try to grab on to you so you need to be able to beat them there too
just imagine what goes through his head when you're punching him and he cant do anything back to you so he decides to try and tackle you but then you beat him there too
at that moment he's fully defeated

Focus on the art you like the most and learn the basics of the other so you're not completely helpless. If you like striking more, practice striking and learn some anti-grappling shit like sprawling, which allows you to stay on your feet and keep striking. If you like grappling, learn how to close distance and control their arms so they aren't punching you in the face so much as you turn them into a pretzel. You'll become more proficient in the style you like most naturally, but it really doesn't hurt to cross train.

Nowhere near too old to learn how to protect yourself. Wilder was 20 when he started boxing, Joe Joyce was 22, h*ck, Marciano was 23.
Boxing has always been one of those things everyone where I live has done at some point when they were younger. One friend didn't though and didn't even attempt it until he was 34. He trained a bit, had two amateur fights, retired with a 100% unbeaten record, and changed from a somewhat meek fella to someone totally capable of handling himself.
You'll learn a lot about yourself once you get punched in the face.

Huh?

Make sure you find a spot that lets newbies spar, even if its light and infrequent. The drilling won't be benefit to you in a self defense situation until after many hours, but psychologically preparing yourself to be hit by another human and hitting other humans will have immediate benefits in a self defense situation
