Personally though, I like Kudo. Sambo just seems like wrestling with some mediocre boxing thrown in. Kudo, is Judo with Karate mixed in.

Most rulesets don't allow choking but allow leg-based throws and leglocks minus heelhooks. Some rulesets allow striking

Seems lionized in the west as some kind of harder than hardcore extreme sport full of killers. Eastern euros I've talked to say that it's actually just a regional sport and the top talent in their countries go for wrestling or judo for that olympic money and prestige. Overrepresented in MMA probably because it's hard to make a career out of sambo. Similar to wrestling in the US.

This is accurate, Fedor Emelianenko won Bronze at the Russian Judo Nationals and missed out on the Olympic team, so he transitioned to Sambo and became a World Champion
