Not always, Fedor for instance would throw a big punch and follow it with a leg sweep. It is hard to force techniques though. When I spar I don't go for throws much but when someone gets to close it's fairly simple. Sweeps can be used to set up other techniques or strikes.
For some people it's enough just to build a better base instead of focusing on using judo offensively. It's emphasis on top position is well suited for MMA imo.

I don't think so. MMA gloves are made not to impair grappling. No gi is a bigger problem.

No one really stands upright enough to get taken advantage of. On the other side, you really have to hit the full 180 upending throws in MMA. See Karo Parysian/Manny Gamburian. Most of their throws were all or nothing, and no one's really been doing "real" Judo in MMA since.

Footsweeps are helping in clicking to unbalance your opponent and to follow up with strikes or transition to a single leg.
If I try big judo throws, they are hard to get and I often get countered.
