After all, if I used a takedown in self defence, I wouldn't wannna get my eyes gouged out so maybe closing my eyes would be safer?

once you have hands on someone you don't really need eyesight much
tactile reflexes are faster than visual ones, your performance improves once you're able to go by feel more than sight and that's true of anything

There's a few blind freestyle wrestlers and bjj players. Dunno about judo, greco, or American folk.
