Its hard to explain. if you're already used to SFM, or SFM was your first software of its type, then you won't have any idea why or how the UI could possibly be bad. Blender, Photoshop, Sony Vegas. these are just some examples of UIs that "make logical sense". they're borderline self explanatory. SFM doesn't make sense at a glance. its downright offensive to where you naturally expect things to be, especially if you're coming from those other software.

I actually think that the reason why sfm is popular is becouse of the workshop, if you are a random dude who just wants to have a picture of whatever character holding a banana or something and you don't have that many art skills while not caring about cuality , you have all the models you need (problably) in the workshop

I think what primarily keeps people staying on the SFM is that as an animation tool where one just wants to skip the 3D modeling, texturing and map making then it is a pretty good software for what it does.

The problem is that it is effective abandoned and even the Source 2 Filmmaker is lacking some features that the original Source Filmmaker has so effectively it is kind of "just there" for Valve to show off to outsiders what the Source and Source 2 game engine have and Source 2 Filmmaker is just a gimmick program to just exist. I think Source Filmmaker (the one with the workshop) was the one that was genuinely intended to be out there for public use but is effectively abandoned at this point.

Another reason for why SFM may still be used is not only to make NSFW animations for Patreon bucks but also because there is a style and way that SFM renders objects and lights everything.
Its just this unique "Source Engine render" look that I think is what gives every SFM animation (when lit and rendered right) its own charm that can't seem to be properly replicated in other software or at the very least the process of visual replication of the way SFM renders animations and images has not been found yet.

I know its heavily edited but man it does a good job and I wonder just how much of it is SFM workshop ported stuff and has been modeled, textured and ported into SFM for this project alone.
