I'm trying to figure out how does this happen. What's the workflow here? Why these hard edges where the skin changes color? Is it not painted in SP or something like that, but instead textures are placed on specific polygons? These look like new, remade textures after all. So many questions, this remaster looks like such a mess. I wonder how big is the studio that worked on it, it would make sense if it was tiny and/or the schedule was ridiculous. And the art director should git gud, because the styles are clashing and it looks just wrong.

Not directly related, but speaking of studio sizes - why do game journalists and gamers often say things like “only 12 people worked on this game” and ignore all the contractors and outsource studios? Do you think that’s fair to all the other people who contributed to the project?

Maybe I’m more sensitive to it because I work as a freelance outsourcing contractor myself, so it hits close to home, but still. Like, do they not understand if there’s a single environment artist in the core team, and the game is huge, there is no way he created the whole world and shouldn’t be praised like some sort of a god? The thing is that because of this, gamers sometimes like to bitch and insult other studios because “if 10 people can make THIS, then your 100-men studio should reach even higher quality!”. Meanwhile, when you count the outsourcers, both studios maybe had the same team size during the production.

Are we external contractors somehow less valuable? It seems so, even though the game wouldn’t be made otherwise.

Another example - Kena. Apparently 15 people produced it, but that is just the core team. Adding fulltime contractors that worked closely with the core team and outsourcing studios, it’s closer to 100 people. And then there are ACTUAL games that were made by 10-20 people with no additional contracting and then some normies might wonder how are those games unable to reach similar fidelity.

my best guess would be due to automation. GTA does have huge environments and an incredible amount of models. It makes sense to copy and paste between characters, textures, models, rigs and whatnot. But still, it's rockstar, a studio that thrashes out games that cost 800 million to produce...

I don't know what my point is, I've played GTA3, VC and SA when they came out, as PC ports, and VC even on flights on my iphone (finished it with those god awful controls, it was a good distraction from flight anxiety).

Now instead of using a generic human model from GTA 5 or whatever they managed to model extra geometry to themes models despite the characters still having the same proportions so fucked up anatomy.

Art direction of this game is one of the biggest mysteries. So many questions, so many things not making sense.
