1) You're 10+ years too late
2) 3D printed desk ornaments are firmly in the realm of luxury item / tchotchke, no one has money for these
3) the people that DO have money for them buy the EXTREMELY expensive and well made versions
Which brings me to my final point: Make extremely well made expensive objects that appeal to wealthy niche collectors.

These have been around for a while, especially in Japan. Small time hobby 3d artists seem to have taken up 3D printing garage kits to sell at comiket/etc. Some don't even seem to sell them, I follow a few on Twitter and it looks like they just model and print for themselves or for really high dollar commissions.
That said there's definitely a decent amount of figures and statues, coom or "normal", on the level of proper anime figures or garage kits out there on the 3d model shop sites. I've been looking for some kind of pirate repository for them for ages. /tg/'s 3d print general has a big torrent for minis with a bit of other assorted stuff, but I want something like kemono.party for thingiverse, cults, etc.

affordable resin printers made it a lot easier to print high quality figurines. But at this point its not too hard to make models yourself. All you have to do is grab some Vidia character you like of some Ripping site and slap a base plate onto it, auto generate some supports and hit go. I don't think there is much of a market where you got people who can only print and not import a model for processing.

You would make more selling assets for tabletop games or rpgs than coom sculpts.
For me the eye opening moment was when I discovered that I with near zero modeling skills can supplement my income with designing and printing simplistic spare parts for niche products while talented sculptors can sit hundreds of hours on a beautiful sculpture and not even sell a single copy of their file.

One print takes an insane long time, 10-11 hours, the bed is tiny, the resin is toxic and needs ventilation, you need to buy the expensive plastic sheets, its super easy to fail a print. Its just a mess.
I really like yours though, but painting them is another big challenge and nobody wants to pay much for all the work and materials involved. Its just not worth it from what I can see...

I still have a long way to go for professional quality, let alone being able to model my own figures. Getting smooth surfaces where supports touch is challenging, with a pillowing effect occuring. Print orientation is very important to prevent distorted models or delamination.

I have mine in a cabinet in the kitchen and the smell is nearly unnoticeable. It was in my bedroom closet, and that was bad. I'm using plant based resin currently, it has less smell, but I'm going to be switching back to water washable when that runs out.
Water washable resin is much easier to clean and gives great detail with a soft smooth surface.
Surprisingly, I have not had a failed print yet, using Elegoo resins only so far. I've emptied my tank once switching resin types, there were no particles in it though.
I do wear gloves and soak the fresh prints in hot soapy water that gets put in the sun for hours to cure the dissolved residue. It's easier for the water washable that you only have waste water and not contaminated alcohol. After the particles in the liquid are cured, you can filter them out and I just dump the water onto the grass.
My biggest challenge moving from fdm printing is proper cleaning. It's not possible to see residue on the model until it's dried, and curing with residue ruins the surface finish. Pic related, residue got caught in the crevices as white grains. It can also leave bubbly or shiny slicks.

you fucking dumbass, it's still contaminated and you're NOT supposed to DUMP IT ONTO THE GODDAMN GRASS, you're supposed to let it evaporate.
and a gallon of water take MONTHS to evaporate instead of the hours/days it takes the same amount of IPA to do.

Wet prints are no problem to cure, many people cure theirs submerged in water. Uncured resin trapped in cavities causes prints to crack, water washable resin works well according to many reviews. 3d printing is bad for the environment. Microplastics are going to exist no matter what. Dumping waste on the ground is bad but the plastic particles are going to go somewhere on the ground eventually. The waste from resin printing should be treated like waste paint and desposed of at approved sites. I don't think fumes inside a cabinet are going to have a big impact on the room outside. Obviously huffing the shit is going to cause problems but with ventilation you could be in the same room and be fine.

yes, cure the excess resin that you're literally washing away from your print while the print is still in the washing liquid with the excess resin floating about
what a great fucking idea
wet prints are unironically a problem to cure.
if they're wet, the surface stains white and cracks after a day or two.
>water washable resin works well according to many reviews.
literally, demonstrably, undeniably F A L S E
https://www.amazon.co.uk/ELEGOO-Was
almost every single review mentions cracking, warping and brittleness to varying degrees compared to the regular resin, and not just the poor reviews (which are the top reviews, btw)
I have seen first hand the same prints done by the same printer, by the same person (not me), cracking with water resin and perfect with regular.
>Microplastics are going to exist no matter what. Dumping waste on the ground is bad but the plastic particles are going to go somewhere on the ground eventually

You're so mad and presumptuous. I shouldn't dump the water, you're right. Getting an ultrasonic cleaner soon, so my waste water will be reduced. Just gonna pour it into a tote after reusing a few times, it'll evaporate fine. Also, you don't cure a part submerged in the waste water, you dork. You can use distilled water for the final rinse and cure.
My water washable prints are great, mechanically indistinguishable from my ipa washable resin. I've done a good amount of solid and hollow parts with drain holes no cracking. I've cured in the sun and with a 60w UV lamp. Cracks form from stress, usually uncured resin without another exit. All the issues with my prints are from learning how to properly support to prevent shifting and cleaning up support removal marks.
How do you resin print for all the people interested in getting into the process?

>you don't cure a part submerged in the waste water, you dork. You can use distilled water for the final rinse and cure.
kek, so more waste water to dispose of, good thinking.
not really viable with IPA for obvious reasons unless you have money to burn.
water washable resin is till prone to cracking (more like exploding)
I saw Elegoo's test rook printed with water washable and turn out fine just to literally explode after a week or so. needless to say, the person who did it made the switch to regular resin pretty damn quickly. unless you're telling me the test rook is a flawed print.
good for you that you never had problems with water washable, but when the time came for me to get into resin printing, I steered clear from it and took the IPA pill instead.
also fumes don't magically disappear if you stow your printer in a cabinet, and if that cabinet is in the goddamn kitchen that's a big no-no but you do you I guess.

I actually still have my rooks, and other being fucking cemented to the build plate, they came out awesome. They're still fine. Maybe people are getting bad batches? The particles in the air from my printer are mostly contained within the cabinet, and it's sectioned off from everything else. Not like my food or dishes are in there. With the normal ventilation in the room, I cannot smell the resin. I did have it in my closet at first and immediately moved it from the smell and after some research into fumes. Once the print is done, the particles settle or stick to the interior of the cabinet. As long as air isn't escaping, it's not being deposited into the house or lungs. Ideally, I'd have it outside in a dark shed.
Everyone's situation is different, if you're concerned for me try not to be insulting and show compassion instead my dude.
My only concern is generating more microplastics. It still goes into the ground whether in a dump or not. Cured resin isn't toxic, but it's still gonna get into something's body.
Would still rather use water than ipa, it's got to be less intensive for the environment plus near free.
Witness my shitty setup that works for me between all my health issues and hospitalizations. Been vomiting a lot lately not sure why.

but just hitting it with a make manifold and boolean all things together, triangulating it and running it to printing programs like mesh mixer to fix all the intersections is doable on most models.
Especially if you don't use straight game rips, but models prepped for r34 animation.

Anonymous at Thu, 16 Dec 2021 23:30:35 UTC No. 870355
>>870333
no! Most models are manifold, but you have to check that. Clothing may be detached so you would have to boolean that together, add a base plate if you want it to stand. just boolean a cylinder onto it. And bigets problem area is teh hair, depending on model, like overwatch type style is easy enought to print due to to being a solid mesh, requiring only standard clean up removing intersections. But if you got hair doen with some 0 thickness planes you are screwed and have to remodel the hair.
Also you have to pose most of the models yourself.
Its a lot fo work, not very hard or challenging work, but depending of the state of the model just a lot of time to invest.
But that is what you have to do to get something custom!

While glossiness *can* mean that excess resin wasn't cleaned off and then got cured, it often means no such thing. The facct that I see glossiness AND layer lines tells me that this is not a case of excess resin getting cured.
In my experience, glossiness after cleaning and curing has more to with atmospheric conditions at the time.
Does the model feel sticky, slimy or wet? No? Then it's fine. Paint it and be happy.
