I used to be really interested in these launches, and I'm still interested in space and spaceflight
However I no longer like Musk personally for his views and behaviour so I won't be watching this launch
I think if the US government wants to rely on SpaceX for launches then maybe they need to think about the Musk problem. His behaviour will cause bad PR for the US. And his behaviour may even fuck up US national interests.

148 km there is no atmo until down to 100 km.
It shut down at 6701m/s so it is 1000 m/s less than orbit. It will fall down in any case, the question is where.

I think they abruptly lost telemetry at SECO. They're assuming it exploded because that makes the most sense but they should've received FTS activation signals before it fired, which they evidently didn't. I think there's a very real possibility that it's intact in suborbit currently.

It was just so much fucking cleaner in every respect. You could see the progress, first one was cool but compared to this was so janky, stops and starts over and over, pieces flying around, slower to get off, engines failing and stuff on fire instantly, that wild spin thing. Loved watching it and that it cleared the tower, but night and day compared to the second time around. Could see 3rd being the charm in terms of simulated landing of booster and SS making it to orbital-reentry test. Then Test #4 they can try actually landing Super Heavy for real.
If they can do that and get SS to orbit, then even if reentry fails for awhile they can start using it for Starlink launches.

More importantly that and the FTS working great means no fresh environmental or safety reviews by government, which was the biggest holdup. FAA doesn't care much about stuff that doesn't pose any unrecognized ground risk, so FTS'ing instantly on command inside the envelope to them is just as good as it being full successful from a pure regulation point of view. SS going off 150km up or whatever same thing, it's out over the atlantic whatever.
So will go massively faster this time.

Point to point is a meme, the logistics of rocket launch just mean its going to be more toothsome than using a C-17 or C-5.
You'd have to integrate whatever payload you want, spend hours waiting for it to be fueled up and then wait to have good launching conditions.
Where its simply easier just to load up a plane and have it take off from a runway.
>>15868885
> no way to test fire the engines
This was true of the NK-15s, but not the NK-33s. The problem was by that point is that Korolev was dead and Glushko was getting chomping at the bit to axe the whole project.

No, the Soviet rocket program was also mostly Nazi engineers at first, including the R-7 which evolved into Vostok (Gagarin) and Soyuz. The Space Shuttle was the only post-Nazi spacecraft in the world to carry crew for about 30 years (Buran never flew crew), and Shenzhou is a blatant Soyuz clone. Crew Dragon, Dream Chaser, Gaganyaan, and Starship are the only modern crew vehicle designs, and Dream Chaser is based on the HL-20 proposal from the 80s.

No it wasn't. The US got the lion's share of the German engineers, not only that, the soviets tried to make the missile program domestic as possible as soon as possible because they didn't trust the few German engineers that they did get. What Bill Nelson was proposing was a stop gap measure to get Artemis 1 going without SLS, not a complete replacement for SLS.

Anon, I will assume you mean if a rocket has to do 2 separate burns to reach an orbit, which while a stupid question since 99% of launches dont have any pauses, the alternative is that you asked if rockets need stages

You are already bargaining. You thought SS would not even launch, or that Raptors would ever be operational, and that it would never reach space. And now you are saying it will launch humans to space but it won't launch humans to REAL space. You are deranged

I personally think the booster failure was down to hot stage separation.
Traveling at 6000 km/h, the booster body rotated on it's axis too quickly thanks to imparted thrust from HSS.
The booster needs to start the maneuver accelerating and aligned with velocity vector. Then it needs to perform a 180 degree flip and wind up aligned inversely with the vector in order to decelerate. Both halves of this keep the fuel "down".
Watching the HSS, you see that the maneuver begins immediately (possibly thrust imparted from starship) and the 180 flip does not appear to align the booster with it's vector.
Could be supported by thrusters failing on one side before RUD.
