Not knocking the game, but terraforming mars is retarded. With the amount of time and resources you'd have to invest for it to maybe work a little, you'd be much better off settling in the outer solar system/ building O'Neil Cylinders. I'm not saying its something we should never do, but it shouldn't be a priority for anytime in the next few centuries. Once the solar system is getting saturated and there's outbound generation ships, maybe we can circle back to it.

Handwaving aside the huge orbital mirror construction, just melting the caps won't produce enough atmospheric pressure to be able to go outside w/o a pressure suit. Also, the way I understand it, you either need to go full send or not at all. The way Zubrin lays it out, you need to melt the caps while simultaneously spinning up a huge industry to produce PFCs, and bank on there being massive amounts of carbon monoxide and water ice permafrost that melts outs, to even get close to 0.5 Bar. You only get to melt the caps once. Mars still has low gravity and no magnetic field. As soon as the atmosphere warms up and expands, it'll start being stripped away again.

Sauce on the 20M years figure? I don't know the projected longevity of a terraformed Martian atmosphere, but I suspect it would fall off fairly quick relative to the slow dwindling that happened as the magnetic field weakened originally. My main argument against terraforming is that the time and industry needed to do it vs the potential benefit doesn't make it worth it, at least for the next several centuries/ until we have handwavvy ayy tech to trivialize it. In the meantime we could be scattering 100s of picrel in the belt and around the outer planets.

This approach uses various methods to cool oxygen down to critical temperature (at least minus 297 degrees Fahrenheit), where it condenses, turning from a gas to a liquid. Initial development and testing have proven NASA can do this efficiently, and the team continues to scale the technology to relevant tank sizes and quantities for future operations.

didn't even think about that, during the Artemis delay call a few days ago the SpaceX representative said they will iteratively test the propellant transfer stuff (from a tank to another tank within starship) and this could easily be done while simultaneously taking payload up

so you have simultaneous launching of starships
propellant transfer testing
re-entry testing
landing procedure testing of different types (like with F9)
but they can start to utilize Starship beneficially for actual missions all the while testing all of this

pretty nice, takes some work off SpaceX as whatever others don't develop they will eventually have to if they want to do a moon base
that is why the Impulse Space spacetug is nice, one thing they don't hopefully have to worry about and a pretty big one at that
but some company should fill every available commercial niche at some point, when you are actually in space there is hopefully going to be more niches than for launches where there really isn't

The ice is not a pure block but is heavily contaminated by dust. While its presence near the equator is a location more easily accessible to future crewed missions, being buried so deep means that accessing the water-ice would be difficult.

it was known there is water in permafrost on about 50% of the planet already, something like 5-15% of the areas which have permafrost
but this seems to be relatively deep deposits of water as its hunderds of meters deep
but if you have 3.5km thick deposits, I don't think water is going to be a problem whatsoever
this might or might not be easier to just gathering a lot of the regolith and extracting that 10% of water out of it though

Yo, listen up, we talkin' 'bout that SLS,
NASA's rocket, aimin' high, no stress.
Space Launch System, on a whole new flex,
Gonna take us to the moon, Mars, no less.

Built for power, no cap, it's a beast,
Heavy lift, big thrust, to say the least.
Stackin' boosters, stages in a line,
SLS climbin' up, it's on the incline.

Artemis mission, yeah, we back in the game,
Gonna land on the moon, shoutin' out our name.
Crew and cargo, payload on the rise,
SLS program, reachin' for the skies.

Solid rocket boosters, twin towers in the air,
Main engines roarin', feel the power everywhere.
Orion spacecraft ridin', lookin' so fly,
SLS program, takin' us to the sky.

Gateway in space, lunar orbit vibe,
SLS kickin' it, on that interstellar ride.
Exploration, innovation, in the cosmic scene,
SLS program, yeah, you know what I mean.

> The problem with Griffin's plan is that it failed miserably 15 years ago. The independent Augustine Commission, which reviewed NASA's human spaceflight plans in 2009, found that “[t]he US human spaceflight program appears to be on an unsustainable trajectory. It is perpetuating the perilous practices of pursuing goals that do not match allocated resources." And that is probably putting it politely.
> There are some huge fictions in Griffin's plan. One is that there would be two SLS Block II rockets ready to launch in 2029. Recall that it took 12 years and $30 billion to develop the Block I version of the rocket. The earliest NASA expects an interim version, Block 1B, to be ready is 2028. But magically, NASA will have two builds of the more advanced Block II rocket (with more powerful side-mounted boosters) ready by 2029.

> I’m thrilled to announce the sequel to Liftoff, titled REENTRY, will be published on September 24. This book picks up the story where Liftoff left off, taking readers on a wild ride aboard the Falcon 9, Dragon, Heavy, and so much more.
> I packed a lot in here: the origins of the Falcon 9, its development, the early launches and fruitless recoveries, two devastating failures, the remarkable road to reuse, flying the first Dragons, crewed flights, Falcon Heavy, the rivalries, and more.
> The story is again told primarily through the employees at SpaceX, the big names are all there of course, but also lesser known but critical players like Roger Carlson, Catriona Chambers, Robert Rose, Ricky Lim, and many more.
> There are technical details and wild stories. Most of all, I want to provide a sense of what Elon Musk and his team slogged through to reach the point where they are today, at the pinnacle of global spaceflight. It was never easy. Nor inevitable.
> Thanks to @johnkraus for the great cover photo. If you compare it to the US cover of Liftoff there are some wonderful symmetries with the rocket and text going up on Liftoff, and then returning on REENTRY.
> The new book is 50 percent longer than Liftoff because there was so much story to tell. I’m deeply indebted to the many dozens of SpaceXers who spoke to me, in addition to those from NASA, FAA, and elsewhere. I did my best. I hope you like it.

> On Earth, the expansion of human society has, in many ways, been an attack on the living biome of the planet. We have bulldozed, burned, harvested and hollowed out ecosystems in the name of our industrial expansion. By the simple act of growing our population and serving its needs, we have shifted the operating system of the MotherWorld. Worse, until very recently we have done so with no thought or concern for the massive stakes at risk, and now we are on the verge of that system collapsing.
> However, it is important that we also never again drive our industrial society forward and outward the way we did here on our own planet. We cannot carry the culture of plundering and pillaging in the name of state strategies or unfettered capitalist cash grabbing with us into this new future. If there is any trash to be discarded in space or on the moon, it is that of the old way of doing things. We must apply what we have learned down here to what we do out there, or, for me, at least, there is no point in going.

What about the other things that Peregrine was carrying?

Aside from its scientific instruments, the spacecraft also carried two controversial payloads sent to space by a company called Celestis, which provides what it called “memorial spaceflights”. These two canisters held cremated human remains, including those of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and actors James Doohan and Nichelle Nichols. Whether or not the capsules survived the trip through Earth’s atmosphere to fall into the ocean is unclear.

depending on the operating costs I don't think its a given that hypersonic jets are automatically better and cheaper than point-to-point starships

That's really hard to answer with any certainty. ULA is coy about the dry mass of it's stages and Blue Origin is even worse when talking about the BE-4's specs. We don't have a lot of solid numbers for Helios either, just 14 tons of propellant and 67 kN of thrust. The only thing we really have solid numbers for mass ratio or performance for are the GEM 63XLs. Northrop might be oldspace but at least they publish a fairly candid propulsion catalog.

But if we fill in the gaps with reasonable assumptions it looks like the answer is probably not. Vulcan Centaur/Helios could only (maybe) get about 10 tons to C3= -2. My thought is that you've probably underestimating the weight of both Dream Chasers. If the DC-101 weighed that little it'd be launching on the Vulcan VC2 instead of the VC4.
