well their parachutes used to come from a subcontractor but spacex bought them when their business started failing and they continued making dragon parachutes as a part of spacex.
i'm sure they have a few small subcontractors here and there, but whatever they do have is likely close to their dragon/falcon/starship manufacturing facilities.

I’m amazed how easily everyone accepts the re-branding of Starship test failures as successes. BTW, re-usable Starship in its current form isn’t happening; at best it’ll be semi-reusable like Falcon.9 (which they also attempted to make fully re-usable). It’ll basically becone Shuttle 2.0 before it’s fully reusable. People don’t seem to understand just how far full re-usability is for Starship. Making it re-usable means they have to RELIABLY land it fully without accidents with pin-point accuracy, and they’re just now figuring out how to not have a catastrophic failure after sending 0.00kg of payload into orbit.

Every program builds upon failures. Every single one that will ever exist.
Sometimes failure tests are even necessary to get answers for critical safety and other performance criteria.
>ok the engine works, so what happens when the whole thing blows up at the pad?
>ok it lifts off, so what happens when it all blows early flight

the point of the tests are not to complete the final intended flight envelope of starship perfectly in one go, it's to get as far as possible, see what breaks, and iterate on design.
finding something that breaks is therefore part of a succesful test campaign.
that you wish desperately to cope about this is irrelevant to the matter. spacex will continue doing this, oblivious to your whining, and will "fail" closer and closer to mars until they're "failing" in their 20 million person colony to build the new megadome on time, and if you're alive by that point, you'll still be here, complaining.

It’s not reusable because they can’t RELIABLY return both the booster and vessel to a landing pad. Just demonstrating the booster returning isn’t good enough, that’s old hat. Somehow getting the ship down within 6km of the landing pad isn’t anywhere near good enough. Even if it could be landed fully and accurately once still isn’t good enough; they would have to demonstrate doing so regularly / reliably. Same thing goes for the Raptors — it’s fine to scramble to get a set of the very best engines for the purpose of a test, but that’s not good enough for production — if they need to fly frequently, it’ll be a major problem if only the most perfect engine samples can be used and only have a few fail per flight.

Serious question; how are encounters faster than Hohmann transfers plotted out? I know Hohmann transfers are the most fuel-efficient transfer, discounting wonky gravity boost stuff, but if you wanted to use, I dunno, twice the typical delta/v of a Mars Hohmann transfer, how much would that speed up the travel time, and when would that burn be done relative to a Hohmann transfer window? I've started thinking about this because I sent a probe on a Hohmann transfer to one of the outer gas giants in KSP outer planets mod and the thing won't arrive for *thirty five years*, and there's a lot of talk about using more powerful propulsion methods for shorter travel times to Mars and other places.

Best pre-launch stream currently is NSF, but will switch to SpaceX official when it begins.
Maybe Dodd's hired photo team will post footage in the next few weeks, but until then, not watching that useless drivel. He fucked up, BAILED on us, and no longer has the best coverage, not even in the top 3 streams. He should stick to making documentaries and doing tours, he sucks so bad as a streamer. Honestly, if he wants to keep doing this, he should just join NSF as a second rate commentator.

Reallysurprised it even relit the engines, I was convinced they had a burn through and everything inside was toast.
Still think they had a bad burn through somewhere on the fuselage because of the fire on re-entry and how easily it exploded on landing, but it’s clearly quite a tough girl. Hopefully the burn though was because one of the tile tests and was more or less ‘intentional’
Flaps were much better this time, looks like it only needs a small amount more resistance

So just from a brief look, it looks like they still have a few things to iron out, something looks like it was leaking from the booster at the landing, the flap on the starship, and the birds>>16427572. Birds are easy to deal with by firing a couple of gunshots before the booster arrives like they do in airports.

I think flying a new booster is more important right now than just showing you can re-fly an old booster. They already have that foundation with Falcon boosters. Chase new designs for now using what you learned from the recovered booster off the seabed and, now, a completely recovered booster.
Starship upper stage will have more upgrades. More flap hardening, TPS. Ship 31 is currently slated to fly next and they’re retrofitting the thermal protection system at the massey outpost rn. No payload bay door yet.
It will probably be very similar to this flight and flight 4. I’m not sure when they will test prop transfer or payload deployment—we’re still far away from any sort of payload bay door. Even for starlink

>throw lots of money at scientists and HOPE they invent some new sort of super powerful but small and reusable laser so we can lase the missiles right out of the sky
or

>they're still committing national suicide by cop in ukraine regardless
I'm pretty sure the ZOG in Kiev is living on borrowed time (and money) and can not survive if the very generous US/NATO spigot ever gets shut off.

They probably wanted to have a wide margin so it could hover for longer if necessary.
Also, I'm not sure if there is a payload sim or what in Starship, but if it's not fully loaded then the booster won't use as much fuel lifting it.
When they start carrying actual payloads and launching into higher orbits the booster will presumably have smaller fuel margins.

Orbital Assembly rebranded to Above Space (https://abovespace.com/). Obviously, like most NewSpace companies, they realize after their funding round that they underestimated the time and cost of their project. Building a Von Braun wheel / mini Standford Taurus is still their long term goal but they are starting off with sending up pressurized satellite buses/capsules in orbit to generate revenue and to test technology. They state they want to send it up in Q4 2024 so there's a chance they are talking about fiscal year meaning late this year to early next year. Vast Space might beat them to artificial gravity though.
