I think you should consider your infactuation with the starshit and the way it illicits such emotive responses. I think it's a dangerous way of thinking considering today it'll explode during the first stage.
The SLS may not be reusable, but it will safely get the astronauts and payload to orbit. Reusable parts will ALWAYS compromise reliability.

All block 1 ships/boosters and all raptor 2s are prototypes/pathfinders. All the flights including this one have been focused on figuring out rapid reusability, and one of the main components is the launch infrastructure. The tower and launch pad are as important as the booster or the ship. And the main thing that is lagging and is the bottleneck is the launch pad. It doesn't matter if your booster can be re-flown if the pad isn't ready.

>The next Starship flight test aims to expand the envelope on ship and booster capabilities and get closer to bringing reuse of the entire system online. Objectives include the booster once again returning to the launch site for catch, reigniting a ship Raptor engine while in space, and testing a suite of heatshield experiments and maneuvering changes for ship reentry and descent over the Indian Ocean.
>Starshipโs upper stage will fly the same suborbital trajectory as the previous flight test, with splashdown targeted in the Indian Ocean. An additional objective for this flight will be attempting an in-space burn using a single Raptor engine, further demonstrating the capabilities required to conduct a ship deorbit burn prior to orbital missions.
>Several thermal protection experiments and operational changes will test the limits of Starshipโs capabilities and generate flight data to inform plans for ship catch and reuse. The flight test will assess new secondary thermal protection materials and will have entire sections of heat shield tiles removed on either side of the ship in locations being studied for catch-enabling hardware on future vehicles. The ship also will intentionally fly at a higher angle of attack in the final phase of descent, purposefully stressing the limits of flap control to gain data on future landing profiles. Finally, adjusting the flightโs launch window to the late afternoon at Starbase will enable the ship to reenter over the Indian Ocean in daylight, providing better conditions for visual observations.

Would the steeper reentry on Starship actually help with the current burn through issues?
Every Starship seems to have been fine in peak heating only to get wrecked when getting deeper in the atmosphere with less heat but much more dynamic pressure.
Would the higher speed bleed-off in the upper atmosphere help with decreasing dynamic pressure later or would it be insignificant?

Starship needs to be able to prevent boil off over several months anyway, so there's no reason to think they can't stage in orbit for a month or two, but that's still 1000 launches and between 5 and 15 times more fueling flights in, say, 90 days.
That's somewhere between a launch every 8 minutes and a launch every 20 minutes.

Just divide the time required to ready a flight on one launch mount by the required time between launches to get the number of launch mounts.
If they can get the time between launches to, for example, 4 hours, they'd only need 30 OLMs, but they'd need to be doing everything like clockwork.
Given that it's SpaceX I think they could do it, but what about all the hardware that's supposed to be on the Starships? Getting all the Mars hardware ready at those rates at the same time is hard to imagine.

you could stage hardware in orbit for relatively long time and then start the refueling operations when the Mars window starts coming up i.e. first launch a bunch of mars bound starships, then refill them later
the later you wait until the actual window opens up, the less boiloff and the less launches you need
but perhaps there will be some permanent orbital propellant infrastructure or something that has near zero boiloff which can be refilled continuously between the mars windows
you could have multiple zero-boiloff orbital stations with all kinds of extra infrastructure that wouldn't make sense to put on a tanker or a mars bound ship to minimize the boiloff

really not a bad idea. but here what i think - i live right under a busy commercial flight path so there are often loud engines noises, sometimes it seems constantly, and they last for a couple minutes each. they can happen at any time of day or night, and are often loud enough to hear indoors.
With launches and catches you would know exactly when they are going to happen and could easily time them for using power tools or whatever you want if you dont want to hear them. I find that its the unknown loud noises that are the worst. if i can expect them then i dont feel as if im having my life controlled by someone elses shit.

>Pace agreed that Musk will play a major role in any potential reshaping of NASA. โPeople underestimate how mission-driven he is,โ he said. โItโs his mission for Mars, humanity, and so forth, that really drives him and will push him really hard.โ
> Musk, before the election, talked about launching five Starships to Mars during the next launch window in the fall of 2026. โIf those all land safely, then crewed missions are possible in four years,โ he wrote on X, the social media platform he owns, in September.
>Trump, during the campaign, appeared to endorse that idea. โWe will land an American astronaut on Mars. Thank you, Elon,โ Trump said at an October 24 rally. โGet that spaceship going, Elon.โ

Starlink is a private company and satellites over taiwan would be privately owned. It's not negotiating something that belongs to the united states government. this pretty much
though its entirely possible that they stay aligned this 4 years and even later, people seem pretty enthusiastic about Starship and Musk already has a massive amount of clout/credit from X and the free speech thing
if he actually achieves something substantial with DOGE then that pile of achievements just grows, interests might bend towards what Musk wants just to keep him happy due to his effectiveness
he doesn't really require that much, most of the stuff seems to be just common sense things that most people should want
he isn't outspoken about the atheism/agnosticism for instance

Childish and ignorant take. Trump is not egotistical, he's a narcissist, which is different. He always points at people around him and tells them they are great, so he can claim that he is great by association. He wants to be liked and loves having popular people around him. It's why he loves having Elon around. As for Elon, he's supremely autistic and has severe daddy issues. It's why he always tries to prove himself and outdo everyone. It's why Trumps father figure and approval is something he yearns for. Their mental issues feed off of each other.

Based. How do you think the Trump admin which will most like defer to Elon on space policy will reform NASA?
I think it would be best to get out of the launch and rocket design industry entirely. Fire all the useless DEI employees and turn NASA into a tech startup style skunk works. Elon has figured out launch and figured out funding via starlink, but the government is better positioned. I think they should handle things the market does poorly. Put as much money into R&D of novel technologies as possible that can be licensed to the space industry (with some profit going to the engineers responsible to make it attractive vs private industry). They need to go all in on nuclear, Nerva, any ambitious research like fusion, plasma magnet sails, spin gravity, materials science. Stuff that wonโt return a profit next quarter or possibly ever, but will help the industry in the long term. They need to go all in at the cape and create as many pads as possible. Use eminent domain to clear out the area around Boca Chica. And they need to take the lead on manned space flight, astronaut training, etc, and take the fall when humans inevitably die, as thatโs when the anti Elon anti space push will be the most hysterical. They should work with university student teams around the country, take advantage of starshipโs massive lift capacity to make as many cheap deep space probes as possible that donโt need mass autism. They should give seed funding to new space startups, and give a contract for a new massive LEO station that tests things like spin gravity, plus massive deep space telescopes and telescopes on the dark side of the moon.

Most of that is already implied by canceling SLS, which is reliant on Trump beating up the Senate more than anything Elon can ask for directly. I think most of what Elon wants is a fair shot - no bullshit discrimination against his companies for contracting, no red tape for launch so he can do 3x a day for Starship.

I agree, Elon doesnโt even need much help, just for the gov to fuck off and get out of his way. But I think this is a great opportunity to make sweeping reform. Honestly good ideas generated ITT could get implemented if someone tweeted at him because heโs so online. Ideally we should reform NASA to be far more ambitious, pick up the slack on stuff Elon doesnโt have the time to focus on like habitats and nuclear reactors. If NASA even became half as useful as SpaceX per dollar spent, weโll explore the stars decades ahead of schedule.

You want to go to western US and see the Martian landscape
>stop at those gas station restaurants
I remember stopping at two different gas stations and being blown away how 1:1 identical they were to one another.
Everything was literally the same except for cashiers. I mean the layout is always similar with franchises, but not to that degree. It felt like being trapped in a deja vu or some kind of time-vortex anomaly.
I don't know if you ever felt that way.

Overall I think that was a successful test, the booster landing was a shame but it's always a good thing that Musk is humbled a bit and reminded of the importance of safety. Starship itself was spectacular, they wanted to push the design to the limits and it still not only survived but also landed perfectly. Very good results.
