He has an IQ far above the genius level based on traditional IQ tests.
The 200 IQ estimate (actually it's 190-210) comes from taking the Mega test. To even pass that you have to be one of the most intelligent people on earth.
He was able to get full marks on it, pre-internet. However, it was upon a second attempt. But to even pass it you need an extremely high IQ.
According to Chris, in his first attempt he was merely trying to gain membership, so didn't try to answer all the questions because he was working 2 jobs, and he wanted membership in order to be able to publish his theories. He submitted his 2nd test pseudonymously. His original result would have indicated an IQ above 173.
The Mega test is self-administered without a time limit, but it is difficult. Working in a bar in the 1980s you would not be able to look up the answers. It was impossible to do well on it without being extremely intelligent.
He also did an IQ test for an ABC programme administered by a neuropsychologist.
Personally, I am not totally convinced he's that smart. But he isn't stupid. He's easily more intelligent than anyone on this board and has a higher IQ than 99.99% of people. But IQ is just a measure of raw intelligence, pattern matching etc. He was brought up as a rancher and worked as a bouncer. Don't use IQ as an appeal to reason. The smartest man in the world could be very badly wrong about anything.
