With only looking at the pic, I guess it spins sideways like a fan, and the dock area is in the middle. Anything that wants to dock would have to match its spin before dcking, and there would only be two docking ports max.

Pretty obvious that you dock in the center you can even see the port.
>>16497717
Why bother matching the spin when you can just have the port stay still and keep the rest of the station rotating? Maybe with a bearing or something idk. That way you can dock safely and no need to slow down station or match the spin.

spinning docking adapter makes sense. Seems like a big challenge thought to engineer a spinning component which can
1. Stay spinning reliably (because there will be catastrophic consequences if it fails with a starship attached) and
2. maintain an airtight seal for a decade+.
Anonymous at Sat, 30 Nov 2024 00:23:29 UTC No. 16497725
And if it spins like a fan, you would need ladders to get up and down, especially at the ends. There's a reason spingrav designs are usually either the whole station is a big wheel, or enclosed hamster wheels.
If you have to have a bearing (like with a hamster wheel), and it's not enclosed (like Discovery in 2001), that's a potential point of failure and atmosphere leakage. It's easy to seal a docking port when it's not moving, but it's hard to make a gasket that moves.
And you also need a spinning counterweight to keep torque from spinning the rest of the station too.
Anonymous at Sat, 30 Nov 2024 00:23:36 UTC No. 16497726
>>16497722
Yes, anons overcomplicate shit for no reason. Why would you ever need to match a stations spin to dock if it was spinning? Thats just retarded and has too many ways for it to go wrong just have the station spin and the dock doesnt. Real life isnt Interstellar just like it isnt the reddit movie.

>just have the station spin and the dock doesnt
That doesn't work unless you have a counterweight spinning in the opposite direction. Basically a big-ass gyro just for the weight of the spinning part. Otherwise the spin will eventually transfer to the part that's supposed to be not spinning. It's basic fucking physics. Spinning a ship to dock on the hub lets you get away without having to spin a counterweight.
You could maybe only turn on the hub anti-rotation during docking, then spin it back to match the station, but if Starship is going to have a side port like Shittle did, being unbalanced could be really "fun".
If the station and hub are big enough, you could even make a cylindrical docking bay, then lightly thrust to park on the inside edge as a floor. That would let more than two ships dock, but it would have to be really big.

How the fuck is it ever going to be possible to colonize space?
>Initial investment into orbital infrastructure and permanent bases on the moon are extremely expensive and most likely wont make any money ever, rather serving purely as just the necessary first step
>Space colonies like O'Neill cylinders, even if you have the funding and infrastructure already in place to build them are too fragile for humans to live. They can be destroyed too easily unless you build fuckhuge continent sized colonies which definitely aren't economically feasible for a long long LONG time and you also have the realities of human affairs i.e. how can humans govern other humans in an environment that is completely controlled and can be fucked with? "Don't wanna pay taxes? Fine, no air for you."
>It wouldn't even be for a long time until Earthly governments can actually get a turn on investment from things like colonies and mining operations throughout the solar system, and by that time, said spaced based colonies and mining operations will probably have a lot of power of their own and will soon start asking questions like "why are we following orders from a guy hundreds of millions of miles away?"
>Planets seem to be the only places that are rugged enough for humans to properly live on, but trying to live on places like Mars can't work due to difference in gravity and terraforming most likely being a pure meme. In order for proper large scale human settlements to work, you have to have an Earth 2.0
>Powerful space based entities can horrifically threaten the Earth via redirecting asteroids towards it, even in the near future doing things like putting bases on the moon can be a huge threat to national security back here on Earth, so you run into the same problems things like the Orion drive have i.e. governments don't like the idea of a company having thousands of nukes in orbit with a "dude, trust me bro" safety guarantee
How are any of these problems going to be solved?

Would it be possible to design suits that people can wear daily that can distribute weight accordingly across their body so that they can walk around as if they're experiencing 1g? Like if you're on the moon, and the moon has 1/6 of Earth gravity, could you make a suit with weights across the entire body that can add 5/6 per body part? Your inner organs will still be subjected to lower gravity but at least the rest of your body wouldn't be and you can walk around and function just like how you would on Earth? It could also double as personal radiation protection as well.

Space Force question: Would it be feasible to turn an entire Marine Expeditionary Unit [MEU] into a modern day ODST force by sending them on a sub-orbital trajectory using Starships straight to a combat zone? I'm sure you can use decoy shit similar to ICBM's during the coast phase and during reentry you could have autonomous pods that can act as C-RAM to shoot down any incoming missiles trying to blow up the landing craft or whatever it is you're using to get the Marines to the ground. Whether that's via whole ass starships belly flopping to the LZ or by retrofitting them with drop pods.

A well fitting vest, some ankle & wrist weights, and maybe a weight hard hat to keep your neck muscles strong and you are good to go. Should help a lot at maintaining muscle mass in low gravity. I suppose you could also make some clothing with lead foil in it (similar to the apron they slap on you during a dental x-ray) and get some protection against x and gamma rays as well, not sure if it would be all that helpful though.

Having 1g is precisely the point, at least for humans.
In a rotating sphere gravity would be lower from the equator and plants and animals can be postioned there, but humans (probably) really need to walk and exercise at 1g.
Sleeping quarters could be located in lower gravity.

There have been some improvements in lenses but the real gains have been in adaptive optics. Of course, like the man said, photoelectric sensors are really, really good now. Ironically all this stuff was invented to stare at the ground from space and not the other way around.

But it isn't there. Space is nothing. Space is the stuff in between the good stuff. Focusing on it is another symptom of NASA shitting itself in LEO for half a century. Companies are having trouble making a little module station make sense, and you want to build one the size of Rhode Island? We're going to spread across every planet and moon in the solar system before we make anything like that, and even then it'll only be as a ship for a centuries long journey to another star.

Have in mind, NASA does a lot more than just put small sats on orbit and it has indeed advanced the scope of human knowledge for generations to come. NASA can be faulted for not achieving the space promise, but even so, the old explanations still stand, no one wants another Apollo program or at least, no one has been lobbying for one in decades, even when technology and industry lowered the barriers and made it even safer than in the 60s.
The reality is that no one really wants to put on the effort and sacrifices needed to have Moon colonies and L3 Bernal spheres.
It was never about money, it was about social will, which for a public program, is the most important thing.

I sometimes wonder if all Musk did was identify an exploitable flaw in culture, in which 100 years of space nerdism with none to zero tangible results created enough frustration for people to work for peanuts and long hours for anyone that could bring any hope for the space dream to come true.

It's more of a "2nd generation" of their kerolox launcher, more comparable with the upcoming CZ-10. Also different manufacturer than CZ-7/8 (SAST in Shanghai vs CALT in Tianjin), it's also horizontally integrated. It's really a chinese zenit, except halfway through dev they realised they needed a Chinese falcon and so they're gonna replace it with a larger reusable variant next year.

Meanwhile these fuckers have a space program, a space station, the second largest army in the world, are spying on the west, doing economic warfare, and infiltrating western goverments&agencies all over the place.
All this while doing genocide in their own nation and creating slave labor abroad.
I'm sorry for my rant but fuck i dont understand why the west is actively creating a spacefairing superpower that hates west.

At its furthest, you'd be waiting three quarters of an hour just to make one post, and I think 4chan times out way before then.
Makes me wonder why 4chan even has Ceres and Pluto flags set up.

We actually took away their Soviet nukes and gave them to Russia in the 90s because they were a basket case EVEN COMPARED TO 90S RUSSIA. They went from third largest nuclear power to zero because Washington and Moscow said so.
In retrospect we should have also forcibly dismantled China, India, Pakistan, and Israel's nuclear weapons programs in the 90s. Fucking Clinton.

Each flute of the screw acts as a separate chamber. The spur shaped gates close either end of a chamber when they're meshed with it. The length of the sealed portion of each chamber decreases as the screw turns, compressing the gas inside. A key feature is that the amount of compression can be adjusted by changing the size of the exhaust port.
But what does it have to do with space? Does Elon own a Daikin AC?

The problem is that space craft have little to no aesthetic considerations, only functional ones. I can imagine an alien race that highly values or needs more organic geometry or angular geometry to make something more flowy or spiky. Humans seems to like boxes and cylinders just fine. It might also be possible that aliens have some kind of plant that for whatever reason is perfect for making vehicles out of. Like some kind of super wood. Maybe they would grow some parts of vehicles rather than manufacture them. If you want to write fiction you really just have to ask yourself how the aliens and what they value differ from what humans value

nowhere near 100 million in those areas. cuba is only 11 mil. baja california is 4.5. sonora 3, chihuahua 4, coahuilia 3, nuevo leon 6, tamaulipas 3, yucatan 3.
So approximately ~38million in todays population.
But if it had happened under Polk back in the 1840s the number of browns would be different. many would have been moved south, and whites would have settled in, as happened in Texas and California under his presidency.

You need a better plan: the salt marsh is a huge flood control zone for the built up areas. The factory would flood if the marsh was filled in. I agree with building up pads all the way down to the Mexican border, though: just put the vehicle transport infrastructure on piers to keep the salt marsh functioning as a marsh. Annexing a chunk of Mexico and building a bridge over the Rio Grande isn't the worst idea either, but the environmental concerns are actually more relevant down there because of the better habitats for the species of concern.

The vegetated dunes function as breakwaters that minimize coastal erosion, even when the ground is saturated. This is important for Texas, since the law of the coastline is that as the coast goes, so too do the zoning easements. As a flood plain, sponge up flood water. https://www.nature.com/articles/nge
