comparing both unfinished rockets, starship will have twice the tonnage of new glenn as well as full rapid reusability aiming to launch again within an hour of landing. new glenn is only reusable on the lower stage, and not right away, and only about 25 times. with half the payload. and it's going to cost more.
new glenn is still going to be the second best rocket humanity has. i don't think musk is upset about any of this.

2km/s at 25km altitude is still a lot speed. Falcon 9 is at 1.5km/s at 25km. For napkin math with velocity to the eighth power for estimated heat flux, NG-1 experienced roughly 10x the heating rate of a successful Falcon 9 entry before it blew up.
The strakes melted, or they got the aerodynamics wrong and couldn't maintain a glide slope, or their entry burn underperformed. Maybe they'll be transparent about it in the AAR.

Eh, it's not strictly impossible but I doubt it
In term of OFFICAL schedule, these are the current plans:
>Deep Blue Aerospace Nebula 1, maiden launch+recovery NET Q2, but it's a relatively small launcher
>Galactic Energy Pallas 1, maiden launch without recovery NET Q2, recovery attempt on 2nd or 3rd launch
>Space Pioneer Tianlong 3, maiden launch without recovery NET May, focused on full capabilities for megaconstellation deployment for first 6 launches, so recovery attempt NET 2026
>Landspace Zhuque 3, maiden launch without recovery NET July, recovery attempt on 2nd launch, they want to recover it before end of year
>CASC-SAST CZ-12A maiden launch likely with recovery NET H2
>CAS Lijian-2, Interstellar Glory Hyperbola 3 and Space Epoch Yuanxingzhe all aim for the very end of the year and are unlikely to launch this year, only Hyperbola 3 and Yuanxingzhe want to attempt landing on 1st launch.
All of these are on the usual schedule risks although CZ-12A, as a chinese government-led project, generally has a more reliable timeline.
Only Deep blue aerospace has very slim odds of beating NG unless they fuck up on 2nd landing. but their rocket is closer in size to New Shepard than New Glenn

For now, the separation speed is not higher than on F9, but given the overall architecture of the launcher (S1/S2 mass ratio ~5-6 vs 3.5-4 on F9) we can expect them to aim for faster separation on future flights, when they have a better understanding of the launcher's margins.

>low TWR liftoff
>can't see anything other than the plumes from external cams
>few onboard camera views and those that were shown were low quality/FPS
>after a certain point just showed telemetry
>booster RUD'd off camera
>timeline got stuck on entry burn for a while
>"so close to landing"
>25km up
>low-energy crowd
>hooray we got to orbit. You can tell because the numbers on the screen stopped increasing!
Also it felt to me like the commentary was trying to take a more of an early-Starship-launches kind of stance by implying that any progress beyond liftoff would be a big success. But the difference is New Glenn was built to be 100% successful from the get-go, and yet the booster didn't land. And it wasn't even a case of it being slightly off-target or whatever - the booster failed well before the landing burn

Landing orbital booster isn't easy, but it's doable, just need trial and error.
it NEEDS a mass produced rocket organization for that trial and error tho, Rocket lab's whole plan of building only 4 S1 will never work. BO will eventually figure it out, they've got another booster late in production and 2 other in various sage of production that are expected to be finished in the next 12 months.

The secrets of VTVL has largely been solved because late movers can simply observe what F9 has been doing and implement their own twist.
Hardest part is the deep throttling, you generally want a 20:1 ratio between total liftoff thrust and thrust at landing - F9's is close to 23:1 in the last few seconds.
You can figure out optimal trajectories and such after a few attempts.

With few nice visuals to show for it, lets just hope there is more footage they're sitting on to release before the next flight (summer?). Overall forgettable, I highly doubt these launches will become a real "happening" here, with tourists and all, because its simply boring, cringe, and depressing. The point of the countdown is to run through a sequence of checks. If everything checks good then there is no delay. If something checks bad then they have to hold and restart at least some of the checklist.
New Glenn is new so it's bound to have many delays, and the Shuttle was very complicated and used liquid hydrogen which always has a tendency to leak.

They're going to have to get the weight of the first stage down and/or get the thrust of the first stage up. Two more BE-4s would do the trick, and even though it would burn through its propellant reserves that much faster, the gravity losses would be cut so much that it'd probably be higher and going faster at staging.

That's not how any of that works. The lower your thrust to weight ratio is, the more of your total Delta-V capacity is spent fighting the constant force of gravity. Below a ratio of, I want to say 1.2, you are losing delta-V to insufficient thrust.

>Looks like Blue Origin may have experienced a BE-4 RUD during the Exoatmospheric Deceleration Burn (Entry Burn). From camera views, the burn was about 15 seconds shorter than expected, and the engines were not decelerating the booster much at all. The hue of the engine burn does not match that of ascent. It appears to be a fuel-rich combustion rather than the OXrich it is designed for.
>This would explain why they were not performing as expected. The LOX tank on New Glenn is in the bottom like Super Heavy, and based on the animation, there is quite a dramatic (and unrealistic) flip prior to the entry burn. My guess is that this could have led to fuel slosh and oxygen starvation, which in return destroys the turbopumps leading to an engine RUD.
>This might not be correct at all, but based on my analysis, this might be what led to the loss of “So You are Telling Me There’s a Chance”.

The differences in design philosophy between Starship and New Glenn are interesting to see at liftoff. The BE-4 is designed for a lower chamber pressure, and Blue decided to keep the engine count down. The result is a rocket that takes its time getting off the pad. Starship, by comparison, can't have enough chamber pressure or enough thrust, and can't get off the pad fast enough.

The procurement was for a service and so was launcher agnostic, no? Regardless of what the expectations of some people at NASA were, apparently the money was sufficient to let SpaceX develop an in-house big rocket. And since NASA gave them that money as a procurement rather than equity, it means the taxpayer doesn't own the rocket whose development they were the main funder of.

>This was weirdly elusive to track. This small plume, clearly oriented downwind, appears at 07:11 UTC. About a minute after the entry burn. Gone in the next image. The fact that there is a sort of smoke plume makes me believe it impacted the ocean while mostly intact, yet still at high speed. This impact location is about 53 kilometers southwest of the LPV, possibly indicating severe guidance issues just before or during the entry phase.

The first book was the best. Whenever KSR starts a book, a countdown always starts ticking towards the point where the story becomes about "and here's why MY brand of communism is the correct one." For some books the counter starts at zero, but the Mars trilogy was able to get away mostly clean until fairly early on in Green Mars. He also uses robotics and automation like they're magic that can solve any problem. A character will just roll up to a situation and solve it by programing fully autonomous robots to handle it like they're some kind of wizard.

Obviously Falcon 9 was under development before they got the contract or the money. Development began at least in 2005, and it was based on Falcon 1 tech so it could be said development started from the very first day of SpaceX. Which means this argument can be taken even longer, considering that Musk hired the development team from TR-106/TR-107, which were developed with taxpayer money. One can also point to how they leased government launch infrastructure for Falcon 9, which is a type of subsidy since they didn't have to pay the full up-front cost of brand new launch infrastructure.
By the way, I'm not saying this as criticism of NASA or SpaceX. This is how industrial policy in capitalist country is supposed to work, unlike for example a market socialist country like China were the government often takes an equity stake in companies it helps fund. My only criticism is that NASA hasn't done more to help create more companies like SpaceX.

Yeah the Mars cult stuff was baffling to me, I really enjoyed the first book where everything is getting set up at a massive scale.

I assume this was only possible because they had secured a big contract in 2008
When exactly were the CRS/COTS milestone payments paid out?

Dude, they built their own infrastructure out of scraps they found around KSC. The shit they leased had rotted there forever.

Fair enough. Still, people over-extend the relevance of TR-106 and TR-107 with regards to Merlin. They are similar engines in concept, but have no engineering commonality or ancestry.
>>16550677
They used roughly equal portions of time and budget, but they are much smaller and far lighter parts of the architecture than the launch vehicles.

COTS was structured as a kind of public private partnership requiring the contractor to put in some of their own money up front, so it was a kind of support rather than a full funding. At least, it required the contractor to take a big risk with their own capital, even if they could make it all back later

Those projects kept a cadre of engineers with up to date expertise and experience on rocket engine development, which probably saved SX a ton of time and money when SX was at its most vulnerable. Imagine if Elon had hired noobs to develop his rockets - the additional costs and delays would've probably driven SX bankrupt.

I'm not saying that it didn't help them at a critical time. The bad faith version of the argument goes something like "SpaceX didn't make those engines, they copied them entirely from NASA, Elon steals everything." That argument shows up often enough that it's hard not to address it.

One of the shuttles did suffer a tile loss and only survived because it hit a steel member and not something more melty.
It was originally considered to build the shuttle out of titanium but I believe most of it is sourced from Russia plus cost made them reconsider. Russia did build a titanium submarine but it had to be welded in a giant inert tent with the welders in basically diving suites

For example, a flame trench and concrete pad at SLC-40, no? They also purchased the oxygen tank of LC-34 and moved it to SLC-40.
Doesn't the Space Force provide telemetry services for both Cape Canaveral and KSC?

So it had a trench and a slab of concrete.
Oh and they had to *purchase* an oxygen tank? That's not given, unless you're of the hebrew persuasion.
