I don't think that type of civil works is particularly cheap to build for a small start-up. Nor is it quick to build, and for a start-up without revenue that's bleeding cash, time to initial product delivery and the associated revenue stream is extremely important.

>GS1 SN001 Impact location at roughly 27°37'27"N 74°28'06"W
>This was weirdly elusive to track. This small plume, clearly oriented downwind, appears at 07:11 UTC. About a minute after the entry burn. Gone in the next image. The fact that there is a sort of smoke plume makes me believe it impacted the ocean while mostly intact, yet still at high speed. This impact location is about 53 kilometers southwest of the LPV, possibly indicating severe guidance issues just before or during the entry phase.
>Also should be pointed out the burn started very low. Was supposed to be 67km, started at around 40 (burn start being when it started actu decelerating--the telemetry is slightly delayed)
https://x.com/mcrs987/status/187997
>Okay this might sound completely outlandish and ridiculous but I'm dead serious when I say this looks like a massive conversion error. more on this if we don't get any actual information ;But basically. Burn on the stream seems to start around 40.8 kilometers or so. Supposed to start at 67km. That's a roughly 1.6x difference. The vehicle is moving at ~2260m/s at this point. Add 600 meters to the "start" attitude, which is essentially a rounding error at this speed when we consider things like stream latency and that such a figure would be a sub-second difference, that difference can become pretty much exactly the metric-imperial conversion rate of 1.6214. This is not definitive at all but my god it would be so funny
>eg, intended burn start at 67 KILOMETERS which is 41.63 MILES but in the actual flight, the burn started somewhere between 40-42 KILOMETERS (hard to tell because latency isn't exactly tied to the altitude). If this is true they're never living this down lol

Tower catch is a good thing, but you can't argue looking the ship is an absolute disaster when half of this test was about testing the tiles and one was litterally flopping around during the launch and the fucking ship is gone

its a success because
>discovered new failure modes in testing that they can fix instead of having them happen during real launches delivering satellites
>government gets more experience in disaster management for the spaceship
>the partial success puts spacex alot closer to getting the whole system working
5/10 is a reasonable rating

6 on the ship because they still got data. Points deducted because not all tests could be performed

Probably not until June to July of this year. Flights in the Carribean had to be diverted and moved into holding patterns to avoid suborbital reentry debris, basically implying that lives were significantly put at risk. FAA will demand a mishap and the footage will give a major PR blackeye to SpaceX. Plus this was a new ship design with a massive amount of changes. For it to fail so catastrophically so early in the flight, coupled with what appears to be flames in the flap area and pieces of the ship tearing away during ascent, implies some massive QA failures. Seems like Elon gallavanting into the White House has led to SpaceX not having an iron fist ruler involved. The last time this happened at SpaceX, you had the Starlink project taking too long and burning too much money. I would expect Elon to shift back over to SpaceX and do a hard review of things, potentially firing people, etc.
This was a catastrophic failure and the reentry cloud entered well outside the hazard zone, with videos from civilians worrying about their safety. If it was just over the ocean, it wouldn't be as big an issue. But because you had civilians directly in path of AND plane diversions, this investigation will take much longer. Only way Starship retruns to flight in under 3 months is if Trump signs an Executive Order that gives SpaceX immunity to any legal liability for their flights.

>140 km altitude
>actual visible fire
That's not fucking possible. It's pretty much vacuum up there, the density is too low for any visible combustion to happen, at least without obvious jets of gas blasting all over. Either it's some optical illusion that just happened to look like fire, or it's a prop set dangling on strings they've been showing us that caught fire and they had to cut the show before it became too obvious lmao

That's irrelevant, it's high enough vacuum to operate an electron microscope at that altitude, even if the leaking gases manage to react before they disperse into space they're too low density to create a visible fire
