You're always a slave to instincts because instincts is literally what you are. Philosophy is just agent detection, pattern seeking and other adaptations that were selected for because it made survival easier. Humans are animals, that's not up to argument, you're a multicellular, eukaryotic, heterotrophic organism with no cell walls that is or has been capable of locomotion on at least one of its developmental stages.

Philosophy is mapping all of that and by mapping we distance ourselves from what we are mapping and gain a little bit more agency than we would otherwise have and so we become a little less animalistic animals.

That's a very dangerous point. In reality. Only ruthless violence can truly improve human condition. Helping others is not only weakness of self, but weakness of us all. To bring back those who failed so hard that they would've died a thousand years ago, is to elevate and revere failure. The weak should have no choice but to fear the strong. Their only chance at life being hatred for weakness of self, and yearning to become strong. To overpower the strong, so you can be the one to ruthlessly abuse the weak. This cycle of violence must never end, because when it does, so will humanity.

There's stimulus and there's response. When there's no delay between stimulus and response one is said to be impulsive like a wild animal. Thinking however and inhibition in general creates a delay between stimulus and response with more possible outcomes even when selection of one of those outcomes is determines. Basically thinking and philosophy is the way in which the system feeds itself more data to calculate risk/benefits of possible decisions.

I guess you're missing the nuance that warlords were raised and educated to become warlords from the day they were born. When you spent your time reading military history and fighting with wooden sticks against your big strong uncle instead of browsing 4chan you too may come up with a brilliant strategy out of the blue amidst a battle.

Each time you shat yourself about falling banks, life threatening viruses, power outages, natural disasters, civil unrest, nuclear weapons and what not I was living a carefree life of nothing ever happening. One day you will die and realize nothing happened after all because you see: your whole life is a limited observation, such a small scope through an already small window of time in a little sandbox that empiricism reigns supreme. You thinking outside that box is like studying the quantum mechanics of talking to a girl.
