Anonymous No. 127892

Alright. It's just that after being more interested to learn about skateboard parts and stuff and reading the pastebin, I found out that apparently Element (and other prebuilts) boards are made of chinese wood or w/e and lower quality parts, so I thought maybe instead of even spending $50 on a prebuilt, I should put that towards a better quality custom deck. I dunno. I just don't want it to break so soon then I have to spend more money and then realize that it would've been better to put together a custom instead in the first place, y'know?

Anonymous No. 127894

Eh, it'll last you long enough to get the basics down and you can replace it piece by piece as it degrades. It won't be total garbage like a Wallmart board, so you might be able to get away with replacing the deck and keeping the trucks and wheels for a while.

I think a decent custom setup would cost about 100 to 120 at once. Now you'll only be spending a fraction of that at a time.

>>127894
I used to push goofy mongo with my dominant foot, but I've since switched to regular pushes with the other foot by default. So imo it's just a habit you develop. Most people are right foot dominant but it looks like regular and goofy stance are pretty evenly split.

this is the goat set up

board brand: anti hero, krooked, real, birdhouse, deathwish, baker, polar, passport. all these bands use BBS decks which are the most durable. board size should be between 8" and 8.5" depending on your feet size. smaller feet = smaller board

griptape: black mob grip

wheels: spitfire formula f4 99d in size 54mm or 56mm

trucks: independent stage 11 standard skateboard trucks in size 139mm for 8" board, 144mm for 8.25" deck or 149mm for 8.5" deck

bearings: bones reds

hardware: whatever

that's probably the most common set up at any skatepark in the country right now.

OK! I went to the at big party in Miami, things off the top my head

Seeing Koston skate in person is still amazing
KB was there, he looked like he fell out of bed, it was 2 in the afternoon, he rolled around for a bit then chilled, a true hero
Nakel is extremely small in real life, he's like this little unhinged gremlin, he didn't skate, he spent the entire time dancing and screaming at the top of his lungs, I never in my life want to meet or be around him
Prod was chilling and signing and taking pictures with everyone, some mafia DON type shit
Alphonzo Rawls still rips and still looks really good for his age
Sal Barbier was skating hard and I can't believe he is 53 years old
Nicole Hause is absolutely tiny, if you didn't know who she was you'd think she was a little kid that walked onto the course, she's kind of adorable
Monica Torres is cute too, I think some guy here is in love with her
Ishod is on some Micheal Jordan shit, the best
Jamie Foy has incredible balance, I don't know why people bully him about his weight, he looks like a completely normal guy irl
Dashawn Jordan was all smiles and he basically put on a whole demo by himself, he's a really nice guy and was stopping to talk with everybody
Pedro Delfino is an actual maniac
Robert Neal is completely different in real life compared to when he's acting for the camera, he's really good too
There was a whole bunch of industry dudes around, it's funny how small the industry is
Some of the locals in Miami are kind of sketch, those dudes looked like actual gang members, I don't remember the last time I saw so many face tats

Anonymous No. 127989

Curl back toes over the edge of the tail. Put front foot more centred on the board. Pop and a scoop more diagonally towards your front heel, not perpendicular to the board. Tense core and hang arms over the toe side so you'll hop forward more naturally. Try landing alternate feet on the board if you have trouble committing. Keep doing this until the spin is consistent and predictable.

i recently found a pair of old skools in a thrift store and bought them for skating and it made me remember how much i love them. boardfeel is so good. but i also know they'll wear out within weeks and i'll remember why i don't buy vans at retail prices.

Anonymous No. 128100

>>128099
>but i also know they'll wear out within weeks
this is basically why I wrote them off initially. not only did they increase in price with the pro line with the promise of better quality, but it felt like they took a bunch of steps back because my vans from yesteryear used to hold up better. I didn't bother with anything from the revamped "skate" line because I hate the shiny outsole, but the wafflecup feels extremely supportive while also giving me some solid boardfeel right off the bat. Still not sure if i'd buy them for full price since I don't know the real quality of them yet, but for half off I feel like I really came up on a great deal.

Anonymous No. 128102

>>128100

Pharmacy Boardshop in SoCal. Shame they don't really have an online shop set-up, I got the LRs and the Crocketts for $85 all together, and thats usually the price of the Crocketts by themselves that I see online.
even before the Skate line, when you had either the Pro versions or the regular versions, the quality was kind of hit or miss, but I had a pair of Old Skools that fell apart in a way that i've never seen a shoe fall apart. paying $75 for those was easily one of the worst mistakes i've done, and I folded my ankle in them due to the lack of support all around. but with some of the newer models in the Skate line like the AVEs, Crocketts, even the Wayvees look kind of durable imo. Hope these end up good because Vans simply look like such a classic skate shoe and the grip/boardfeel is really unmatched.

lets hope the sole on these doesn't split like my last pair before the Skate line lmao

I believe they close the park at 8:30 or 9:00 depending on who is working at the time, but it gets dark so early these days a “night sesh” feels like it starts at 6 ha

You’re the transition dude out of OC right? I might head up early after work on Friday to check out if they still have this insane DIY QP right by the park for some fun times. They also have a bmx zone in the upper area of the park center, and it’s dirt, but they covered the kids section in asphalt for whatever reason and it looks like some of the coolest shit you could possible skate

I'm the transition guy out of ventura, probably the same guy you're thinking of though. That big bowl with the bridge over it looks pretty fun. I just need to get out and skate some different shit for once.

I'm going to try get all my week's work done by tomorrow so I can head up on friday but if I don't make it this week i will definitely try come up soon now that i know that there are people up there to skate with.

I saw your post about some park in Woodland Hills around Thanksgiving, but I was stuck in the desert visiting my family. if you can't make it to Santa Clarita i'd be down to meet up and skate at that park at some point too. I've never been but it looks fun. but I gotta say, if you like bowls/transition, SCs full pipe thing under the bridge and the deep end of the bowl is actually insane to skate. it's fucking huge, I can't even get up to the coping in the deep end. like yeah I suck at transition but it's massive, yet really fun.

Yeah that part of the bowl looks intense. I'd maybe get a scratch at most. The big curved quarterpipe that slowly gets bigger is what i wanted to check out, i like spots like that because you can do a trick at the small end and then slowly go bigger and bigger until you are doing it on a head high ramp, and i got a few tricks i would like to practice on it.

The other place was westlake which has a small mellow bowl and a bunch of other fun stuff like a small hip, euro gap etc. I haven't been there in ages but it seems like a good place where anyone could find something they like to skate and it's fairly central

Anonymous No. 128361

>>128359
That big curved quarter pipe with the brick planter qp in the middle is honestly my favorite thing to skate at the park for the exact reason you said. You can keep stepping your tricks up and up until you're at the steepest part of the transition and really test yourself. The build in ledges along side it are fun too, I'd always practice doing power ollies off the ledge into the transition and keep making my way up higher and higher, you get insane speed and the parks layout in general has a lot of natural flow, so you can drop/ollie in and cruise the entire park off of that. it's so fun.

Yeah, Westlake is what I was thinking about. Seems small but I kind of like parks like that, the the obstacles look varied enough that anyone can have fun.

Keep me posted, it looks like the weather is gonna be clear on Friday in Santa Clarita and it would be cool to meet someone from the threads. maybe I'll bring my shitty little go-pro and go full fat bill mode on your shoes.

its not a big deal. I went to castaic once , but besides that 5 stair they have there's nothing really worth making that trip. The paths are so narrow.
Monrovia has a nice bowl- i'm ass at transition skating , but i do a good job there. The street section i like because everything is kind of close together you can get some nice tight lines in there. But Monrovia is probably well out of the way for everyone.
My wife's bday is this weekend so i can't do anything , probably not til after the holidays actually but i'll throw that out there if anyone wants to consider going to the SGV next year i'm down.

Pulled up to the skatepark last night and I overheard these local zoomers talking about some diy they were building. They were saying things like 'yeah we gonna lay that cement tomorrow bro on god'. I was strapping up my elbow pads and I started chuckling to myself. I'd been vibed by these teenagers before and now I was gonna get back at them. I walked over to them and said, 'first of all, it's CONCRETE, not cement. Cement is an ingredient in concrete. And secondly, you don't LAY concrete. You pour it and finish it.'

The kids looked up at me from the bench they were sitting on. They looked around at each other, smiling but not saying anything. I couldn't really read them but I'm pretty sure they were scared shitless. For a moment I actually felt bad but I knew if I showed weakness they would vibe me even harder so I just threw down my deck, rolled off and did a fat boneless down the stairset.

First of all stop trying them stationary. Roll up to the curb even if you’re going a snails pace. Look at where you want to land, and aim your back truck/foot in that area to lock in. Your back truck “isn’t going anywhere” because you don’t have momentum to land where you want. Sounds like you need to dial your ollies in if you can’t understand how to aim your trucks at something desu

Forgot to mention this to the SoCal dudes, but Santa Clarita has a dirt BMX zone for the bikers at the top of the park, and they have a little section for the kids that they completely covered on asphalt for whatever reason. Never skated it because I just found out about it maybe a month back but if any of you guys ever wants to meet up at the park we’ve got to get a session on this thing. It looks insanely fun. Nothing too gnarly but the transition looks pretty tight/quick and plenty of bumps to try and fly/ollie over

Well I am definitely going to try skate somewhere tomorrow, I was thinking Moorpark after lunchtime because the rain is meant to stop mid-morning. I've only been there once before though so I don't know if there are places where water pools after it rains or whatever but I'll just bring a bucket and sponge to clean it up if so.

Don't know if you've been there before but it's a fairly transition-orientated park but it has a good mix of small and big ramps with a few street obstacles.

I'm over this weather, it keeps fucking raining on the weekends... I know we need rain but not like this

Give him a few years. He's starting to round out his tricks more, getting to work on the miniramp and working on his spins (think he heard people ripping on his "360" ollie and got to work). It's insane how much he progresses every time I see him skate. I swear to Christ he can pop twice as high as he could during BATB.

Also, the rest of the Hop team are being slept on. Ellis Frost can do insane flip shit too and he has a ridiculous level of balance to boot.

Yeah, he's honestly a savant at flip tricks but not a tonne else (yet) so people give him shit because "hurr durr sure he can switch double lazer late flip and multiple NDBs, but why can't he do X non-flip trick" as if spending most of his time in a shed allowed for that or he was even focused on it. I think he'll eventually develop style as he diversifies more or starts focusing more on spots than tricks, but yeah, when he does stuff he has on lock the style comes out.

I'm honestly excited to see where he'll go next. Hopefully he can get some more sponsors. I worry a bit that the YouTube videos have peaked and that he'll need to start doing actual parts to go any further.

You have to use your whole foot/ankle in stages. It's hard to explain, but you sort of "jump" by throwing your upper body into the air then extend the ball of your foot in order to send the tail down for the pop.

Just focus on making your tail pop off the ground and landing back on top for now, doesn't matter if it goes very high or if your front foot doesn't do much. Listen for the sound of the pop and you'll have bounced it into the air.

Idk, it's okay. I went there today. It's one of those parks where you either have to be really good or a local so you can find the good lines because the tranny is all fairly difficult to skate. There's not even a standard mini ramp to warm up on. The big bowl at the end of the snake run is like 8ft with what feels like 18 inches of vert so it's pretty gnarly.

Kinda bums me out how all these newer Californian parks are so complicated. Like just build some normal shit that people with normal skateboarding ability can ride, not everything has to be made for professionals.

You're not too old to skate but it's a pretty steep learning curve.

If you don't start skating when you're a teenager (or younger) you miss that fearless stage where your brain isn't smart enough to truly comprehend injury yet and so you can progress super fast. If you get the fundamentals down while you're a teenager you'll basically be good for the rest of your life, but trying to do it as an adult seems near impossible (judging from how long it takes me to commit to anything as a 28 year old compared to when I was 18).

iirc there was a rumor back in the day that he was actually getting offers from Adidas but SoleTech gave him a chunk of the brand/Altamont/another pro shoe/some shit and that got him to stay towards the end of the Stay Gold years. I'd imagine of that was true, the ship already sailed, considering he could probably ride off of his Kader connection and easily get on Adidas. I'm sure NB# will let him have free rein on a pro shoe and he's probably going to try and Janoski himself an endless paycheck off of it. NBs are already pretty popular, I'd imagine a Reynolds model that actually looks nice would be the best selling shoe in the catalog. his designs are timeless and he's probably one of the most respected skaters in the industry. he deserves it
