Anonymous No. 158363

Features you like edition.

FAQ on buying a bike that nobody reads anyway:
> What good bike can I get for under $500?
a stolen bike. Possibly a newer used entry level hardtail but don't expect it to survive rock gardens, jumps, or drops. Or an older mtb which won't be as good as newer ones and will still have a front derailleur, but it'll be good enough.
> What good bike can I get for under $1000
Good used hardtail, new entry level hardtail
> What good bike can I get for under $2000?
New Hardtail, decent used full suspension
> What good bike can I get for under $3000?
Used full suspension, decent entry level full suspension but prepared to put more money into it.
> What are the excellent value brands?
Marin, Commencal, Canyon, Polygon, YT, Propain, Kona, and many more. Sometimes the expensive brands have an excellent value bike
> What are the differences between an XC, Trail, Enduro, and Downhill bikes?
XC bikes are for going up fast, go down not as fast. Trail bikes are for going up and down. Enduro bikes are for going down fast, and slower up. Downhill bikes are for going down really fast, needs a ski lift, truck, or the rider pushing it to go up.

I now have all the parts for my Yeti Arc build. My goal is to have it rideable by saturday morning so I can hit an easy flow trail I first rode a few weeks ago. Even though it's built to be an XC bike, the components and frame are more than strong enough to handle black diamond trails. I'm going to try riding it first with Schwalbe Wicked Will tires. If I need more grip, I may toss the maxxis assegai and dissector I have on it but I already planned to put them on my Wreckoning and save the Michelin Wild Enduros for the winter. These come from the factory with a DHF in the front and a dissector in the rear so putting a tacky tire in the front is intended since the bike is supposed to be ridden hard.
My goal is to make it a very colorful bike, but I don't want any of the colors to be overpowering like that overpriced santa cruz posted a while back that has the rims covered in neon decals. I want lots of colors, but in small sizes. The bright green DVO fork might be too loud but it was the only one in stock

about the Schwalbes. I used to have them on my full squish trail bike but took them off because it's hard to get the PSI right on dry trails so I didn't trust them at high speed or when hard braking. They call them "downcountry" tires but they're really just tougher XC tires with the cornering knobs and tougher carcasses from their beefier tires. I think putting on something like a Big Betty in the front would give it more grip and still keep the bike fast rolling

Its done. Slight bad shifting in 2 middle cogs and harsh metalical sound when changing speeds but shifts good enough. I also cut the bars even more, its ~765mm now. Was 780mm I think. When riding berms at the bike park I often noticed me lifting outside of my hand a bit. I think I'll feel the loss on long straight chunk but corners should feel better.
The screeching on my rear brake wasn't the pads being glazed, but the metal spring rubbing the rotor as pad is unevenly worn.

Now, if they accept my PTO tomorrow, inshallah, I'll be racing saturday(enduro +750m -2350m) and on sunday the mass start race(13.6km -2000m).

Almost done building the bike. I always get centerlock hubs so I can use 6 bolt rotors on them with an adapter if I choose to, but the special was on the 6 bolt hubs in turquoise so I got them instead. I already had the centerlock rotors so I took the 180mm 6 bolt rotors I use with adapters off the rear wheels of my other 2 MTBs and put them on this hardtail, and used the two new 180mm centerlock rotors for those bikes.
I forgot to thread the rear brake cable through the cable guide on the frame so I have to detach the hose and try again. Luckily Maguras don't lose fluid if the levers are turned straight up so I may not have to bleed again. After that, I just have to get the dropper post and lever hooked up, get the saddle, shifter, and grips on, and lastly I have to get the cockpit and suspension feeling right.

>>158492
It's easy but it can be a pain in the ass in some cases. Get a lot of rubbing alcohol, preferably in a spray bottle, so you can clean the DOT fluid or mineral oil off quickly. One good way to keep brake fluid off the levers and cockpit is to wrap a rag or old sock around the lever so any spillage is absorbed.
Read this carefully and memorize this. When you're done bleeding and it's time to put the bleed screw back into the lever, STOP TIGHTENING WHEN YOU FEEL IT CLOSE. Don't give it just a little more, just stop, they're so fucking easy to overtighten and strip, and yes, I have done it more than once and have had to buy new levers. They have rubber seals that do the work so you don't have to tighten it past screw head touching the lever.

newfag here looking for first mtb, thoughts on vitus rapide 29? at 11.2kg it's very light for an aluminium frame and seems to have good components compared to other similarly priced/more expensive bikes, although my knowledge in that department is limited. also has remote lockout, which is nice. the main drawback I've seen is it's only 10 speed, the others I'm looking at have been 12 speeds, is that a big issue?
other's i've looked at are:
canyon exceed cf 4 (more expensive, heavier despite being carbon fibre and some of the components are worse)
specialized rockhopper expert 2022 (reviews were talking shit about the fork. would be more expensive but currently on sale)
marin bobcat trail 5 (heavier, don't like the tan tyres, but has more suspension travel)
also feel free to correct any of the retarded assumptions I'm probably making

Anonymous No. 158695

>>158646
Not all sealant is created equal. Stan's Race Sealant uses bigger crystals and they will clog an injector and the valve.
I still prefer to use an injector and inflate the tires first. Tires usually go on easily, but other times they don't and I won't know which it'll be until I try get that last section of bead on.

How come all pressurized air, whether it's from a tire, dropper post, or from the suspension, smells like rancid cum? Every time I depressurize something, the smell immediately reminds me of the cum casket I had in middle school when I hadn't emptied it out for months.

Looks bretty good for a first bike. The air fork is pretty nice, but the remote lockout is a bit of a meme. I would avoid any that come with a cheap coil fork. Don't worry about the number of gears, it's the range that's important and 11-46 is fine. 10 speed has the advantage of being less finicky than 12 speed as well. I would personally go with the 10 speed over the 12 speed setup. You'll also want to add to the budget some money for a dropper post.

I wanna gopro. I’ve been riding DH occasionally since 2011 and riding all types of mountain biking consistently since 2019, and I’ve never once seen myself riding a bicycle. I think I’m getting pretty good and I need to be taken down a notch, what’s the ideal setup for gopro these days? Chest mount (does that work with heart rate straps)? Chin mount for my Fox RPC helmet? I have money but I certainly don’t need the latest and greatest, what can I expect to pay? How’s battery life?

Anonymous No. 158793

>>158767
You should consider a DJI Osmo Action. Significantly cheaper than a GoPro, really high quality and great tech, doesn't overheat like GoPros can(not sure if they fixed this), uses the same accessories. I use it and I'm satisfied with it but it seems to eat its batteries when not in use. I still get 30 min of footage at 1080p60fps at a full charge on a bad day.
I also considered getting an insta360 but someone pointed out to me that it's going to be in the line of fire all the time and at risk of being broken so it's better to get something cheaper.
Chest rigs are good, they probably won't interfere with a heart rate strap since they fit pretty loose, only problem is that the angle can take some trail and error to get it just how you want it but there gimbal setups if it matters that much.
Helmet mounts are fine too, the extra weight on your head may bother you.
I do not recommend mounting it on the bike. The camera just doesn't stay in place and you can hear the rattling coming from the bike. The positioning is hard to get right.

Somebody else recoding you on a phone or actual camera would be best. Gopros are designed to be as flattering as possible to the wearer because the ultra-wide lens and tunnel-vision hypersuperultranigger(tm) filter on the video makes it look like you're going at warp speed no matter how slow you actually are.

It's also cheaper to just go enter a race. If you must get a gopro, chest mount is best

DD or DH casing. Terrain is rocky alpine terrain (pic) for first 2 stages and forest loam roots for last 3. Saw several flats and tires off the bead, maxxis, on the end of stage 2 which went from a blue jumpline into black tech. Anything less than DD and you'll destroy the rim on roots.
Thats because maxxis was undefeated before. DHR+DHF was/is the to go combo.

Doere shifter can't downshift 2, which was noticable when it got steep and needed to pedal which was often. Deore + xt shifter should've been a good option. Took the Arc out on its maiden voyage to a very easy and flowy trail. Once I got the tire pressure, cockpit, and saddle right, I was beyond impressed. I already had high expectations for this bike and it exceeded them. It climbs like my gravel bike and is as agile as my dirt jumper. It is so much fun to ride and it is so fast when pedalling. It does feel sketchy when hitting a chunky turn but that just means I have to slow down and choose a different line. It wheelies on command and is so easy to get airborne.
These Schwalbe Wicked Wills are good tires if you have the pressure low. I took them off my Evil Following because I didn't trust the traction on dry terrain, but I just had to drop the pressure to 20 psi front, 24 psi rear. I had them at 25psi front, 30 psi rear at the start of the ride and it was still better than before, but a little too drifty when hitting a corner, now it's near perfect.

>You could've done Michelin or Continental...although today at the race some dude had a flat with a kryptotal enduro casing. Almost all flat I saw today were m*xxis
I'm planning to take the Wild Enduros off my Wreckoning and putting on M*xxis assguy and dicksucker. I considered going Kryptotal front and Xynotal rear to try something different because I already have Wild AM and Force AM on my Following and they're top tier there, but the Continentals are only in stock with the trail casing and I don't want to risk them ripping. Nothing wrong with the Wild Enduros, but I don't need all that grip now that's it's dry and dusty so I could go with something faster. I also already have the m*xxis tires since I was going to put them on the bike first until I saw the Wild Enduros finally came back in stock last year
I'm never going back to DHF+DHR. The Michelin Wild AM+Force AM are a straight upgrade over them except maybe in durability. The carcass feels softer but I have no reason to doubt them otherwise

Got rained on pretty hard 10minutes after I took that photo. The off camber section of the course was a slip n slide literally and unrideable so I had to try and tripod my way down it, nobody cleared it.
As for results The guy who is in charge of the series is gone to go race at Downhill southeast this weekend so I will see how I did when he decides to post the results if he even counts them as 4/5 of the field went home because of the rain. I think I did pretty decent 2nd or 3rd out of the 10 people to put down a wet time. Depending on how many people rode the course dry, my time could get destroyed. The dirt is similar to the clay out west where it turns to slippery peanut butter when it rains. So a wet vs dry time will decide how I did.

Went out for a "club" ride today. I say club in parentheses because there 25+ people in the club but the same 5-6 people come to every club ride and we never hear from the others, even though some still hold committee seats they have all lost interest by the looks of it. Anyways, we went to arapuke MTB park today which has a hard clay based soil which gets very slick in the wet. There's been about 3 weeks of rain followed by 2 days of fun so the trails were all super slick. Great fun.

Anyways, I have decided to sell my two mondrakers and buy a proper Enduro bike. I'm quite keen on the Marin alpine trail C2. It lookss a pretty good spec for the price. It has the geo I want. I would prefer a mullet and I also think the 38 may be overkill for a pedal bike. But also I want a proper Enduro bike and 38mm stauntions are just the way they are all going so idk. The conti dh kryptotal f/r lasted 10 days of riding in the pds memezone, not much wear on the rear surprisingly with 5000-6000m of downhill per day.
Comparable m*xxis would have had ruined side tread, I'm converted.

Like always, I should’ve spent more time listening to 4chan. I just ordered $400 worth of GoPro 9, chest mount, 2x extra fancy “enduro” batteries, 128GB SD card, and a little foam wind muffler.
Hope the 9 kicks ass, excited to cut a hole in my jersey, everything I read says the 9 and 10 are essentially identical (aside from the processor update, which people say is mostly identical), and I plan on staying below 4K so the improvements on the 11 don’t affect me
I didn’t even see any articles on the mini versions…

But I wanted to be able to use the camera with any helmet so I got the chest mount. I guess I could try the helmet mounts once I have it, but that also means no visor and it’s just barely dropping under 100° max these days

The screen is what makes it so you don’t need to bring your phone though, the mini can’t take still photos and you can’t change the battery(!). The session was a sick design but it was half the weight of the 11 because it had terrible battery life if I remember right, the 11mini uses a full battery so it’s not really much lighter than the full-size, still way heavier than a session

Really depends on what you want out of it. You can make a better high end build for less than the top tier prebuilt kit but you probably can't build a cheaper one than their cheapest kit. If the prebuilt has all the stuff you want, then that's fine, but if you're like me and know you're going to upgrade it immediately and swap components, then don't bother buying prebuilt and just build it yourself

I have a similar fuckshow going on. Last week I decided I wanted a new bike, had a Marin alpine trail c2 on my list and the price actually dropped on the weekend to $5250, which is a pretty good price for it's spec (I think) so I have put my blue mondraker foxy up for sale for a bit of extra money to make it all work.

But then, this morning, my friend sends me a link. It's an alpine trail c1, frame and shock only. I could strip the mondraker down and build the Marin up into a very similar spec as the C2 I'm looking at, but at what cost? So I have sat down and made a spreadsheet. If you want to have a look, the first column is the cost of buying up the bike and pedals. Second column is building up the frame from a mixture of second hand and new parts, some of which I already own. Third column is the cost of stripping the blue mondraker and using those parts to build up the Marin. This would be arguably as good a spec as the factory build c2 save for the fox 38 performance elite that they come out with, which would add approx $750 to the build cost (there's one for sale on FB now).

I have also included in the blue totals 'paper cost' which is the cost of parts that I'd be using that I already own, so as much as they wouldn't be costing me anything to use they still have a value. The orange totals are real cash outlay for that option. I honestly don't know what to do here guys. I can have a brand new one for $5500 or a second hand build with better wheels for $2460 but wreck a bike I could potentially sell for $3000. Thanks for reading my blog post.

You are objectively wrong. There's no reason to ride m*xxis unless you want a tire thats called assguy to represent your nig(tit vs ass map) preferences. Yesterday I met a guy on the trails, he was running DHF/DHR combo. Of course I went on asking why he rode m*xxis instead of something like continental, schwalbe or michelin. He said that he hasn't tried schwalbe, he did not like kryptotal enough for a spiritual conversion and did not want to run 1.5 Kg per wheel in tires alone. He also added that m*xxis is the only one to make tires in thin/light casing with soft rubber, it would've given him a case but Michelin makes the non competition line of Wild Enduro in MagiX2 with Gravity shield which weights 980g in 27in and 1030g in 29in. The assguy in paper thin Exo+ with maXXnig 3c is 1250g. Unfortunately for him I forgot about the noncompetition line.

Have you ridden with this casing yet? Love the grip of the Wild Enduros but I'm not racing DH or shuttling so the extra kg and stiff as fuck sidewall are overkill. Not the guy, I've ridden them. The tire compounds great, tread pattern is great. It's just more vulnerable to punctures with a lighter casing. Michelin dominate the tire market in every other industry. And they know how to make a good tire.

If I didn't sell my soul to Continental and whatever German magic that makes their rubber soft and grip roots while also lasting multiple park days with barley any wear

I would be running some wild enduros. But continental currently make the best terrains specific downhill oriented bike tires.

Ultimately it’s probably safer at night considering the snakes aren’t active, I’ve seen a single coyote 3 different times during day rides, but the nighttime howling sounds like dozens of them just over the hill. No bears or aggressive hooves around, just a couple livestock/horses loose on the trails.
I haven’t gone up to the local mountain (pic related) at night but i really want to, I’ve already ridden there directly there lightning storms and heavy winds, it’s getting less intimidating. This is also the outer edge of where black bear warnings start being posted so maybe I should consider bear spray. Never used it before but I have encountered black bears on the trail while riding a few hours north.
Driving a few hours east however gets me HUGE big-mountain epic world class riding trails I’ve always wanted to visit… and grizzly bears. I consider myself terrified of wildlife overall

Late night animal noises are cryptid-tier in California. The animals sound like women in distress and it's uncanny enough for you to recognize it's not a human, but something else. When you read about it in the daytime, it's nothing, but when you're out there, the paranoia kicks in and the sounds of your tires flinging rocks into the foliage sounds like something following you.

I messaged the guy with the 38 elite and he is apparently having the same issues as me with a cooling bike market and sold me it for $500. I got so excited about that deal I bought the frame. I've remembered I actually have a spare rear wheel (needing bearings) and two tyres hanging on the (Magic Mary's, I'm sure that maxxis hating faggot will approve) so all I actually need to buy to build up this bike is a bottom bracket, brake rotors, cables and outers, dropper post, seat, pedals, bars, stem, grips and a front wheel. I got bit by something or allergic to something 3 weeks ago at the bike park that had my whole body itching for 1.5 weeks. Got several "attacks" per day where my skin got rashes like this, this was a minor one. And there's nothing you can do but scratch and scratch while hoping it goes away. The worst were on the scalp, base of penis and back, not even direct ice could stop the itching. I'm still taking antihistamines every night as I've never had my body itch like that before.

The wheels alone are enough to fuel a 2 week bender easily if sold at current pinkbike market price and risk is basically zero as they'll be set free easily. if you have the time, space, and will, then hear is the best thing to do if you really value your chain.
> have extra chain
> take dirty chain off drivetrain
> stick in jar of kerosene or gasoline and shake it around to decrease it
> take chain out of jar and stick in jar of rubbing alcohol/ethanol and shake it around to get kerosene or gasoline out
> take chain out and let the ethanol dry off
> put chain in a crockpot/slow cooker full of melted wax and make sure it's completely covered in wax
> take chain out and let it hang dry
> once other chain is dirty, take it off and repeat the process and put this waxed chain on.
It's actually an easier, cleaner, and faster process than it sounds like. You'll just have to keep around a slow cooker used solely for chains. I know of several riders who swear by this process but I personally don't do it because I still have a lot of muc-off chain lubes

Absolutely, it's pretty green. Its also cooler than I expected, I haven't bitched about hot weather like I did in June and I sleep with the comforter. Last sunday I even had to use my wind breaker in the afternoon as it was cold in the bike park(1300m). Yesterday there was hero dirt but I got a flat 1/3rd the way and I didn't have a pump with me so walked down 2 hours then a bus to get home.

No volume spacers as I'm light as a feather. Actually I do touch LSC if its a mellow trail like a pumptrack where I don't want to be diving on a fucking roller.

Doesn't matter if they sound real or not, adjustments are for making your bike ride the way you want. But yes they do sound like reasonable adjustments. It sounds like you want your bike to ride slightly deeper in the travel and you added LSC to compensate so it doesn't dive during rider inputs. Keep in mind that this is probably going to feel stiffer than before and that's either going to be more controlled or feel bad depending on how you like to ride

Based. I'm guessing he just changed the oil in it? That is extremely cheap if he included the 200 hour service kit. I'm thinking of doing suspension and brake maintenance for some side cash since turnaround for that around here is pretty long, sometimes months for suspension work. There's basically only one shop here that'll do it, and the rest will just be a middleman that sends your suspension to them anyways kek.

Anonymous No. 161159

Yeah and the red seal. He went full sperg on eliminating the air bubbles from the oil. Instead of using the maxima oil he used another one, same weight, that has lower viscosity and it says that it takes longer for it to heat up. trust the geek.
>rest will just be a middleman that sends your suspension to them anyways kek
In fact this is the case on two shops.
The dude had everything. Compressed air to clean, blocks to hold different sized dampers, like 7 different syringes, a manitou dorado he was working on and just lots of tools
If turn around is too high you can easily get customers. Get a vaccum chamber and put a flask with oil, then put up a video on facebook or someshit like that
https://youtu.be/z4Egxf555LU
Like this and do the 'muuh deaeration of sr*m/Shimano oil for crisp braking' There's a vid of a guy strapping the vaccum pump to the lever syringe to get out the microscopic bubbles to expand to get them out instead of them expanding when the oil is hot and shitting up the brake. I'd cum if I did that on mines

Rely on 3 instead: reach, saddle height and R.A.D

If you're buying new look for demo rides, a lot of dealers offer them on an adhoc basis and big events often have a selection of demo bikes.
Manufacturer can probably organise these on your behalf or point you in the right direction.

If you're buying used, sit on a few bikes, simple as. Figures can be tweaked slightly with stem, riser bars and changing the saddle position but it's better to find something that feels good out of the box.

Goodbye to the 0.1mm wandering point point I feel on the rear brake. The longer hose amplifies the isssue 10x. I didn't get wdp even when using the 17mm/s2 (it made the rear one unrideable) oil in the front but a slight mushy feeling as bubbles were harder to get out. It can hold 2L of water and it keeps it decently insulated from body heat and weather
The storage area is well put together since you can organize what you're putting in there
it has molle straps so you can put more bags on it
It has straps to hold down other things externally like jackets or gloves, and it holds them pretty well.
If I put 1L of water in there, it stays pretty stable for my 1.5 hr long after work rides even when I'm riding down something chunky.
It's solidly built too. I've had it for years and it has no damage or wear on it aside from dirt

Reading more about the Selva R, I forgot that the damper is tunable through different valves for compression curve changes
https://www.rideformula.com/technologies/cts/
12 compression clicks and 8 exchangeable valves, 96 options for compression tuning. You then get 21 clicks of rebound, 2016 individual options on the right side. Now you gotta set up for 2 air chambers and if you want, volume spacers can be put. Then test airspring side with 2016 compression options.

The A4s are more than good enough. I don't see a reason to spend 3x more for the Trickstuff brakes other than to flex on other trail users. My A4s don't overheat or fade when I chicken out and ride them through a long and steep trail, they can stop on a dime if the tires have enough grip and I weight the bike properly to not OTB, modulation and adjustability is excellent, bleeding is pretty easy, they're durable and are good at tanking crashes. I know the Trickstuff brakes are better, but I don't need them. I've never been let down by my A4s and I pair them with 203mm+180mm galfer wave rotors.
I wish Hayes paid me to shill them. The only downsides I know of with the brakes are that you have to take the wheel or caliper off to change the pads(SRAM lets you load and unload from the top) and that parts availability and customer service can suck according to a post I read. I haven't had any problems getting a replacement lever and it was easy to get more of the hose fittings.

A lot of the 'more stopping power' of Saints and Shimano brakes come from their poor modulation. Also, the only.riders who are taking advantage of the marginally.increase stopping power of Saints are pros, and yet a lot of world champs are riding Code RSCs.

The reality is the money spent 'upgrading' your Code brakes could have been better spent else where on your bike.

My riding buddy replaced his GX one for $430 and he said that was on sale. Same with shifters and derailleurs. Sram shits just so expensive. I know you'll call me a poorfag (apparently only poorfags own ebikes) but I don't see the point in paying twice as much when the two brands both perform so similar. I do like that my XT shifters will double up and double downshift and the upshift works in both directions.

>yet a lot of world champs are riding Code RSCs
And those who do? What suspension are they running? Lmao dumb nigger.
The only reason you need lots of modulation is due to your lack of/very shit fine motor skills. The modulation in saints/shimano is good as it is, you can feather them as much as you want very very easily without issue. Fast ramp up early in the stroke allows more pressure to be easily exerted at the end of the stroke, lowering armpump. Juat because code Rs(lmao) are enough for what you do doesn't mean they will be enough for long alpine descents.
>>161949
>The reality is the money spent 'upgrading' your Code brakes could have been better spent else where on your bike
Brakes are one of the most important places to spend money on. You cant go fast and do precise hard breaking with mushy(muhh modulation) brakes, you cant enjoy a long fun descent as you are stopping every 4-5 minutes due to arm pump as brakes heatup power is lost and you gotta pull harder but you cant on mushy brakes.
A set of MT5s are 25% cheaper than a set of Code Rs lmao and better.

personally, I find sram shifting is much crisper than shimano but I do agree both systems work when set up correctly :)

I run gx with the cheap sram cassette made of steel that still fits on a hg freehub :) the gx shifter let's me upshift 4 slots at a time, but downshifts one a time, granted very quickly. I had 11 speed deore before this and hated it, was super unreliable even after repeated set ups.

when I was putting bikes together for a job, I always found sram slightly easier to get dialed than shimano :)

I think the materials used by both companies are pretty similar and sram spends more on marketing - if I wasn't still working in the industry, I'd probably just run whatever I could get a good deal on through my local bike shop :)

None of this really matters! have fun riding your bike!
