And its even cheaper to build them yourself. A rear Ex1700 is 320ā¬ and a 350hub(160ā¬)+ex511( 75ā¬) +34 spokes(20ā¬) is 255ā¬. 70ā¬ for lacing it up. Which is what you would pay in a bike shop or even more to build it.

I wish my i9 hubs were louder and sounded like a stuka bomber. I have a wheelset with Onyx hubs >>166564 and I don't really care about the silence. I heard a roadie flying down a road on a hill climb my friends and I were doing and it this guy's hubs or brake rotors sounded like a stuka.
Some dude in one of my gravel groups made a post bitching about loud hubs so all us dudes with loud hubs started posting our loud hubs and one guy had these custom hubs that his builder nicknamed the "Aztec Death Whistle" because they were so incredibly loud and menacing sounding. My ENVE Foundation 65 wheels have the loudest hubs I have followed by the i9 1/1, the DT Swiss hubs on my Dirt Jumper, i9 hydra, the Mercury hubs on my 650b gravel wheels, and lastly the Onyx hubs which are completely silent so all I hear while pedalling is the chain moving through the chainring. I would have bought ENVE MTB wheels for my XC build if they were in stock, but I ended up buying another pair of NOBL wheels(TR35 rims with i9 Hydra hubs)
>>166609
I really need to learn how to build wheels. I can do everything else, but I can't build wheels yet. I need some more space to store the wheel building tools. I don't want to use the ziptie on a chainstay method to true the wheels, I want to do it the right way and have them true, perfectly tensioned, and the rims dished properly.

What is the last place you traveled to for a biking vacation? How was it? If you haven't traveled for biking, where do you want to go?
For me, I last went to squampton in BC. The trails are probably the best of anywhere I've ridden, and they never get old. I want to do a heli-drop ride out in revelstoke next time I'm out in BC

What counts as "traveling"? I do day trips but I've never used my bike bag to go on a flight. I planned to ride in Arizona last year while I was there for a business trip, but my plans changed.
Outside of my state, I want to ride in Bellingham WA or something on the east coast.
Outside of the US, I want to ride New Zealand since the NZ anons post some fun looking trails. I'd like to ride in Mexico but the only place where I could do it and not get bothered is my dad's hometown, but there aren't trails there.

My last 'proper' riding trip away was Rotorua, before that was Rotorua x5 but before that was a private park called "that place" near whanganui where you go and camp and ride their trails. Place is fuckin sick, they have some really cool trails. It's not huge - you could ride every trail in a day if you were shuttling or e-homoing but the trails are all really fuckin cool.
My dream trip would be Canada. It seems like a super fucking cool place to ride.

Yup, a good pair of merino wool socks, winter gloves, balaclava, and the Giordana ceramic short sleeve base layer are all I add to my mtb winter kit. It doesn't get too cold here so I don't need anything built for snow. I'm only cold at the start of the ride and then I get hot and warm up when I start pedalling. The Giordana baselayer is so good because it keeps me toasty when it's cold and I soaked it with sweat, but it still stays cool when it's warms up so it's great for mid-season rides and temperature swings. I'd buy more of them but they're $80 and you can probably get the same performance out of merino wool and possibly save money. Not sure if you really would save money, proper merino wool kit is still expensive. I always wear knee and elbow pads when I ride one of my mountain bikes and they also work to keep me warm. I need a lot more to keep me warm when I'm on the gravel bike in the winter, but that's because the speeds are much higher and I'm willing to ride in worse conditions since I'm not damaging good singletrack

Thanks for the advice. I do have spoke tension tools and spoke wrenches, I've just been ducking the work because the spoke length calculator tools are confusing. I do keep zip ties in my backpack and a multitool to trim them. There have been times where someone I ride with has spokes break or come loose so I'll practice with their wheels before breaking my own

>Pic related my car at the campsite
The trails were okay nothing special, I did a 66 mile loop the first day,
smashed a derailleur on the second day, 1 mile into a morning ride. I just slept, hiked mt.rogers and played whiffle ball that day.
3rd day I did a 12 mile loop which consisted of only rock garden early in the morning and drove back.
Sharing trails with horses sucks, I can now empathize with Californiggas. The make every rock loose, shit everywhere, and turn a trail into an 8 inch deep path of mud and manure. They and their owner also freak out passing a bike on the opposite side of a 2 lane highway.
>>166660
You only need a tension tool, zipties accomplish everything else. I have built multiple wheels using the ziptie method, and they are just as straight and evenly tensioned as my old i9s and store bought downhill wheels.
My advice for you is, make sure the spoke tension is spot on all around and you relieve torsion in your spokes. That and go do a hard day for the first ride, to let them settle. No matter how good the builder or the wheels are a new set will need a retrue after a month

CSU creaking increased 10000x this time. Previously I had to pump down the bike with force or do a frontal force to cause it. Even when I just had to get out there and ride, I always regretted riding through it because it wasn't even fun to ride through. At least there are plenty of rocky and sandy trails around here so I can always find something to ride when my usual trails turn to shit. I've been riding my gravel bike less this summer because it was all I rode for the first 3-4 months of the year due to how fucked and destroyed the trails were from the constant rainfall. Wasn't just mud, trails washed out, sinkholes formed in the trails and on the roads to get to them, and trails became completely blocked off by trees with no way through or around.
Enjoy your trails while you have them. You never know when a catastrophic weather event is going to come through and fuck everything. One of my favorite spots to ride is still closed

luv me Arc.
Chamleon is good but I don't know what you want a hardtail for. I got my Arc for XC but I ended up just using it for bike parks and the same chunky trails I use my full suspension trail bike on. I have a friend with a Chameleon but she's a beginner and she's on the budget tier with the RS Judy fork so it's hard to tell how capable is really is. I've seen people do some serious shredding on trails and hit jump lines at bike parks with them but I've never paid close attention to how they're riding
EvansMTBSaga on youtube just did a series on trying to find the best aluminum 29er hardtail. He didn't try out the Chameleon but he tried out some of its competitors. He ended up going with the Bird Zero 29

You should look at bikes with sliding dropouts, otherwise you'll very likely have to run a chain tensioner. It's not necessarily bad to have one, but it's one more thing to break on a bike that is presumably intended to be as simple as possible

Not this. I really don't get singlespeed unless trails are nearly flat or ride in cities. If you want to climb you want a big cog but to pedal in flat/down you need a a small cog. Doing alot of effort to keep cadence on a climb seems like it'll fuck with the knee, and after getting the IBS I've been careful with it.

Thinking of trying clipless pedals after only riding flats on mtb. My freeriders are slowly falling apart and aren't waterproof which isn't great during the majority of the year in the UK. Additionally, there is now play in my left hand side pedal (old superstar components nano) which after taking it apart just seems really poorly designed as there is no inboard bushing/bearing and only have them in the centre/outboard.

Is it an xc or enduro race? In any case go ride the trails if the course has been released to find the good lines and have an idea of the pace you can keep.
>kinda nervous about this, I have no idea what the etiquette is.
If it's enduro, say something like "rider up" of "when you have a chance", and they should pull over at a safe spot. In XC there are usually doubletrack sections and parts with multiple lines, which are where you pass. Otherwise you could ask them to pass on singletrack, and if they're nice they'll pull over, but it's less likely that they will as in an enduro race.

I use to do clipless. I ran almost any shimano spd variant, but the ones with exterior platforms tend to be stronger and better for heavier riders.

something that fits and has a stiff sole. Kinda like flats in that regard.
Oh and different people like different amounts of "float" in the pedal. I prefer more float so it's easy to dab a foot on a techy climb, or unclip while bailing/crashing.
It does take time to get used to it, so do some easy trails first and maybe wear knee pads.

newb here with newb question
My shifting has been feeling shitty lately, especially upshifting. It's like grabbing the higher gear is always rough and I have to focus on smoothly turning the pedals into the gear so my feet don't get popped off the pedals from the harsh shift.
Usually when I start feeling shifting problems cleaning the chain helps it but the problem is persisting now.
I saw a youtube video that said you should see if the derailleur got bent so I'm looking at that. Is this bent? If I squint my eyes it kinda goes inward but maybe that's fine.
How do I into making shifts good?

Build is going to be GX 12s, XT 4 pot brakes, 36 performance Grip 160mm - il possibly swap this with the 170mm 36 rhythm off my ebike - 203/180 rotors and Magic Mary's just because I have a set hanging on the wall. It means you did the turn wrong and youāre correcting yourself. You shouldnāt be able to lift the rear in a well-executed turn because youāre loading big weight onto both tires, and if youāre a pro you probably know exactly when your wheel is going to slide and would use that technique instead of unweighting, lifting, and then repositioning your body weight into the rear

meanwhile in California
> Santa Cruz trail locations and names are all kept secret because nearly all the singletrack there is illegal and it exists in a gray area where it's not enforced and the locals don't call the cops. All maintained by volunteers
> trails aren't on trailforks either
> people post videos of them riding the trails but keep the locations and names hidden and refuse to give them out. Oftentimes they give out the name of a different trail at a different park as a joke because this gnarly trail is clearly not a fire road at a park for beginners
> new riders who don't know the state of things ask and don't get answers
> they get mad and write an essay about people gatekeeping and that they're leaving the sport forever because of toxicity in the community because people won't tell them where the secret trails are.
this shit happens every week. It's actually easy to find out where the trails are since they're all on Strava if you use the Explore Segments function.
Pretty fucked up that Ibis and Santa Cruz are both based out of Santa Cruz yet barely any of the trails there are legal. Specialized is based out of Gilroy and their office rides are done at Henry W. Coe State Park which is absolutely brutal to ride at, but all legal.
https://santacruztrails.org/blog/gi
They're getting a lift service bike park which is great because if you want to go to one and you live in SF Bay, you have to travel for 3-5 hours to the Sierra Mountains to find a park that's a ski park in the winter. This will be dedicated to riding and there is no snow here unless there is a freak weather event.

Nice. You have a big boi cassette on there so I presume 10+speeds. Generally they are a little more finicky to shift and as you ride you will get better/used to it. Or you will spend time later fine tuning it and get it in better shape.
Looks like some nice pedals. Generally when I offroad I do a similar route and learn where I can pedal or not in case of a trench/rut you may(or may not) have to ride through.

It rained a shitton the night before and the roots were slick as fuck. I was so tired I couldn't see straight and I kept fucking up on the features with slick roots. Then a fucking train of fast dudes would come up on me and I'd have to wait for them to pass since the trail was so narrow. I'm fucking cringing typing this out.
But ah well, I'm glad to have got the experience and I'll know to pace myself next time. On the bright side my crush was there and I got to talk to her a bunch. She laughed at a couple of my jokes so I'm in boys

What matters at the end of the day is the experience and giving it all. One guy told me that if I'm not fucked up by the end of the race I didn't give it all. But if you couldn't see straight due to fatigue, thats something. Now you know how intensity wears you down fast, and you need practice intensive long efforts rather than short ones. I went to the closing weekend of the bike park and it was really really wet, which never happens, my shoes had half a liter of muddy water in them when I dumped them out and I made someone spray my entirely mud-coated body with a hose afterwards in the 40F cold, there was 0% chance I could safely swap Gopro batteries with all the rain and mud everywhere I touched, and I completely forgot about mud on the lens, so I barely got any useable footage to give to you, enjoy.

It really was the 15 minute chairlift in the wind that was unbearably cold, once I was on the bike I felt totally comfortable despite being slimy in mud from head to toe (no good way to wipe my glasses was another issue, my vision was much like the gopro footage). Definitely had some slippery moments where the front wheel vanished, fun times. I keep thinking of ways to dial in my wet gear setup now but itās only wet like, 2 days a year here
Everything looks so different when itās dry, like this big rock on smokejumper I looked down at in the video

you need longer stems for deeper rims. It's not something you have to think about with standard mountain bike rims but it's something you have to consider if you have deeper aerodynamic wheels. Just watch the sizes when you purchase new valve stems online so you don't accidentally purchase something really long meant for 65mm deep wheels

during college I arranged my schedule so that all my classes are bunched together, possibly with a lunch break in-between. So this means that Monday Wednesday Friday after I got done with my Differential equations i can head straight to the trails at 1:00pm after grabbing a bite to eat. My other days my classes were later and I rode early in the day. Homework was done during my freetime days before it was due, or friday and sunday nights right before the deadline. I rode all day saturday and a shorter ride sunday
now Working full time I have a different schedule. leave for work at 5:50 get back at around 5:00pm,
this is where meal prep and time management gets important, you don't have time to go ride and cook/clean during a single day so you get to choose one or the other.
Make a big ass meal on two days of the week, like a large box of pasta with some chicken alfredo ect, and make around 1-3 lunches as well those days.
now you have food in the fridge
on my riding days I get home at 4:45, microwave leftovers and wolf them down with a glass of milk, get all my shit ready (water, bike, gear) and leave around 5:00-5:30 depending on how much I need to get ready.
Alternatively you could just build some cool shit in your yard or in the woods near campus. I built a skinny teeter totter in my garage this weekend. I'm going to go put it probably at the on campus trails, we need more tech features and skinnies. Also it turns out that nails and dimensional lumber are expensive. So I am going to try and use the trees that fall across the trails for building stuff as much as possible. so that means I am going to go buy a wood chisle set eventually.

Hello mtb general i have a couple questions. I am a new mtb rider who bought a spec. rockhopper earlier this summer. However, I am 5'10 about 180 lbs and the bike is a size medium. I recently had my first experience at a downhill park (highland in new hampshire), and some guy told me that optimal biking position was where there was no forwards or backwards pressure on the handlebars and your basically standing on the pedals. However, on my first ride back on the rockhopper instead of the rental bike at highland i noticed that was basically impossible. Do you guys have any suggestions to fix this? The discomfort is really annoying now that I've rode a fancy bike, but i don't have any money to buy a whole new one.

It sounds to me like you're standing too upright - the bar position on an xc bike like yours will be lower and further forward in relation to the bottom bracket than a DH bike or enduro bike, so you will need to hinge at the hips more.
Try watching a video of an XC race and take note of how the racers' chests are oriented while they're on technical sections, then take a video of yourself and compare.

Checked and based. My past couple of rides have all been rainy, people here are alergic to any dampness, so the trails were nice and empty in what is usually a pretty busy trail center on the weekend.

You guys discuss bikepacking here?
I'm looking for suggestions on what to look for on a touring/bikepacking bike, and if you have any suggestions.
Routes here are about 60/40 road/dirt
I prefer something more upright over leaning forward
I need a rear rack and mounting points for bags
More lower gears > Higher gears, it'll be loaded and I don't ride at high speeds
There's the option of buying a hardtail and replacing the wheels with "touring wheels" or Gravel Wheels but I'm not even sure that's a good option.

I hate to direct you to /n/ but you're probably the first and only person to ever bring up bikepacking in these threads. Everyone just talks about XC, Trail, Enduro, Freeride, DH, and DJ here. Happened a lot when I rode the trail in the image. First time riding it and I was out alone so I didn't want to push it too hard since the area doesn't have many riders or hikers even on weekends. It's hard to gauge what's coming up so I had to stop a lot, it all ended up being surprisingly easy for what is supposed to be a black diamond trail, I'd give it a blue. Dunno about this bros. Last week I met some guy on a aluminium L spindrift. It was heavy, like my (2020 M range) 18kg. And he was using sram drivetrain, airshock and lighter exo tires. If I put a coil, XT drivetrain and michelin Dh tires its gonna be above 40lbs easily.
I would buy the frame with the shock but I would need to buy a Zeb and new front wheel/tire.

Definitely. My Wreckoning V3 is all carbon and barely has any alloy components and it still weighed in at 38lbs with the raceline Michelin Wild Enduros and my tools on it.
Not gonna lie, as much as I love the grip on the enduros, I wish I didn't buy the raceline tires because they're so heavy. I replaced them with lighter exo Maxxis Assguy and Dicksucker tires for the summer and the bike is noticeably easier to pedal now. I should have bought the regular Wild Enduros since they're each half a kilogram lighter

I don't think they'd be there if they were highly skilled riders. You have to remember that the average person thinks riding up a curb is challenging. The trail builders really love their steep as fuck chutes. Rode Airborne, Magic Carpet, Dusty?, and Sweetness. Really a great place to ride but not my favorite. Not to say there is anything wrong with them, but I really love the kind of trails that are wide and have a lot of features on them so you have a ton of line choices. SC trails do have options, but there is clearly a right way to go down them and I don't have a lot of time to think about how I want to go down when the trail is steep as fuck

You bend rims most of the time before you pinchflat one. Seeing that your rim isn't totally fucked yes, a tubeless setup could have prevented this.

I had a flat tube twice last year. I paid gas to get to the mountain, I paid money for the day pass if I go to the bike park. I ain't wasting time fixing a tube anymore. This is of course assuming you're using a mountain bike for its intended purpose, not whatever you're apparently doing

I agree, even at 14 years old in 2009, I could realize that repeatedly fucking around with tubes was a waste of my time and insisted from that point on that 100% of my bikes will be tubeless. But then now in 2023 I finally buy a road bike with 23ās and Iām not sure what to do, Iām thinking I figure out to manage tubeless like usual, whatās the alternative, fucking 25mm gatorskins? Become a tannus retard? Absolutely not, tubeless is the superior flat protection system AND the highest performance tire dynamics (if you think gatorskins suck, then you agree tubeless performs better)

>23mm
I thought 28mm was the meta for road now since it sits flush with aero rims and and they deflect less over imperfect terrain
Not to be off topic so I'll get back to mtb talk. I'll be riding my hardtail tomorrow. I really love this bike for forcing me to commit more and consider new lines on trails I've been riding for years.

Road bikes from 1980-2015 donāt even fit 28mm tires, who the fuck decided that was worth 100g weight savings ?

Cycling and MTB feel like they're full of bro-science. It used to be you'd go as skinny as possible to reduce weight and drag, then they decided to go 28mm because it sits flush with aero rims and it deflects less over rough terrain so you don't lose as much speed when hitting bumps. Same with MTB, now companies are selling all these anti-pedal kickback devices or incorporating it into their frame designs(i.e. high pivot frames) even though pedal kickback, if utilized, can be used to go faster since the same force that kicks back, can also be sent back into the drivetrain

Yeah my experience is the same. I've only ever seen a woman riding by herself once, and she was pretty old, maybe 40. All of the girls that I know that ride only go if there is a group.

Interfering with your suspension doesnāt make it more efficient, the whole point of suspension is to stabilize the majority of your mass at all costs while letting the lighter bits articulate freely around the ground, if pedal kickback is jolting your already-flexed legs then itās jolting your torso and the majority of your mass, saying pedal kickback is good is like saying you should jump up and down on your bike all the time to go faster
