Even with the steel plate & water we should still see some brown dirt plumes right? Hopefully visibility is better though. Also good chance that the civilian camera setups don't get annihilated by debris this time, so we should expect a way larger volume of excellent quality liftoff photos too.

My friends,

It has often been said that i like launches. My friends, i like launches.
No, friends, i LOVE launches. I love main engine startups, i love max Q's, i love clearance zones, i love holds, countdowns, i love post flight analysis and scrubs.
Launches from peninsula's, from barrier islands, from NATURE RESERVES, in the arctic circle, from deserts, in the sea, in the air, i love EVERY act of launch that can occur upon this earth.
I love blasting people's eardrums to smithereens with booster engines that thunder through the stratosphere. My heart leaps with joy whenever a test article is forced high~ into the air and blown to pieces by well placed flight termination systems!
and there is nothing like a launch director using a rocket to DESTROY government regulations, and the feeling that comes when a beetle runs screaming from a blazing launch pad, only to be frozen by runoff liquid nitrogen is such an exquisite view.
Like when ranks of boomer boats brandish their monster energy rushing into the marine exlusion zone. It moves me deep within my heart to watch an fresh engineer cutting over and over into an uneven carbon nozzle...

The sight of overfags being STRUNG UP FROM A LIGHTNING TOWER is an irresistable pleasure.
And there is NOTHING more arousing than the sounds made by piping plovers DROPPING LIKE FLIES, SQUAWKING IN AGONY as they're mowed down by supersonic debris!
When a band of pitiful nature activists make their final stand with nothing but public comments, only to have their salt marsh smashed to atoms, grain by grain, by 358,000 GALLON DELUGE SYSTEMS, i'm in exstacy.
I love it when my rockets are ravaged by a giant frozen pisspuck. It's so sad to see towns and villages that were supposed to be defended at all costs being hit by hypergolic boosters, their women and children being crushed and asphyxiated.
I love to be SQUASHED under the heel of the FAA and FWS' beurocratic machines, the humiliation as my pad workers stack and destack like vermin, ducking the spacecraft being lifted overhead.

Gentlemen, all i ask for is launch, launch so grand as to make hell itself tremble!

I was an aerospace engineer of over 45 years working mostly for NASA and some other aerospace companies. The last 10 years I was the director of a division that dealt with partial reuse of rockets. Project failures in this field are more prevalent because they are designed by less experienced engineers who want to make their mark on the world by creating or implementing a new untested technology. They typically watch too much Star Trek and Elon Musk podcasts. Usually they are theorists, that live in a theoretical world. Old aerospace engineers like myself lived for many decades in the real world, and know theory and reality can be very different. We design projects based on proven concepts and proven hydraulic acuators. our projects evolved more slowly, but dependability and reliability were the highest priorities. We built, and studied results before extrapolating into larger projects. Today's aerospace engineers rely entirely on computer modeling to verify the validity of their designs. Experience has been replaced by blind faith in aerospace. I guess that's true in many professions now. Just my 2 cents, Starship isn't gonna be a functional vehicle for at least 5 years

According to Everyday Estronaut
>The grid fins are currently electrically powered, using a modified Tesla Model 3 motor to drive them. In continuation of using Tesla parts, the batteries are currently energy optimized instead of power optimized, as a car needs several hours of energy, whereas the grid fins only need two or three minutes of power. Due to these reasons, Musk noted, like much of Starshipโ€™s design, the batteries are temporary, and battery mass can drop by a factor of ~10

ULA chief on the Vulcan rocket: โ€œThe path to flight one is clearโ€, Project Kuiper ready for satellite production after successful prototype tests
---
https://arstechnica.com/space/2023/11/ula-chief-on-the-vulcan-rocket-the-path-to-flight-one-is-clear/
> United Launch Alliance is closing in on the debut flight of the Vulcan rocket, and it remains on track to fly the vehicle for the first time on December 24.
> During a media roundtable on Wednesday afternoon, the chief executive of United Launch Alliance, Tory Bruno, said, โ€œThe path to flight one is clear" for Vulcan. The last major piece of hardware for the rocket, the Centaur V upper stage, arrived at Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Monday. All of the qualification testing necessary for the first flight, including for the upper stage, is complete.
> As its primary payload, the Certification 1 mission will carry a lunar lander built by Astrobotic, which will attempt to make a soft touchdown on the Moon early next year.
---
https://spacenews.com/project-kuiper-ready-for-satellite-production-after-successful-prototype-tests/
> TAMPA, Fla. โ€” Commercial Project Kuiper satellites are entering production next month without design changes after two recently launched prototypes aced end-to-end tests, the broadband constellationโ€™s vice president of technology said in an interview.
> KuiperSat-1 and KuiperSat-2 successfully demonstrated fiber-like speeds after launching to low Earth orbit last month, Rajeev Badyal told SpaceNews, enabling work to start on more than 3,200 production satellites with similar architecture.
> He said the tests put Amazonโ€™s constellation plans on track to start launches in the first half of 2024, enabling beta services later that year with early partners that include telcos Vodafone and Verizon.

ispace Reveals its Lunar Micro-Rover for Mission 2, Rocket Lab Takes On Venus
---
https://payloadspace.com/ispace-reveals-its-lunar-micro-rover-for-mission-2/
> ispace is taking another stab at a lunar landing.
>The Japanese lunar infrastructure company has been hard at work figuring out where it all went wrong during its failed lunar landing attempt this year, and now itโ€™s ready to try again. During Mission 2, slated for Q4 2024, ispace will send a lander and a micro-rover to the lunar surface with the intention of studying the terrain and collecting samples of lunar regolith.
> โ€œDuring Mission 2, ispace is aiming not only to land on the Moon and explore the Moon,โ€ ispace CEO Takeshi Hakamada said in a press conference. โ€œWe are also planning technology demonstrations and equipment for our payload customers and are aiming for groundbreaking activities in addition to the micro rover.โ€
---
https://payloadspace.com/rocket-lab-takes-on-venus/
> Deep space exploration isnโ€™t just for governments anymore.
> โ€œA private company going to another planet for some tens of millions of dollars to look for lifeโ€”I think thatโ€™s kind of a mind shiftโ€ฆand a shift in exploration of our solar system,โ€ Peter Beck, CEO of Rocket Lab, told Payload. โ€œIt can be done not with billions of dollars in front of it, and governments in front of it. It can be done with a relatively small amount of capital by a group of enthusiasts.โ€
> Rocket Lab announced last year that it had partnered with MIT to take on the first private mission to study Venus, which will look for signs of microbial life in the clouds. The team planned to build the system cheaply and quickly by NASA standardsโ€”the original goal was spring 2023, but itโ€™s since been pushed to the next launch window, which opens in the last few days of 2024.

Nevertheless, one of the authors is developing a simplified electrostatic cleaning system that utilizes the standing wave generated by a single-phase rectangular voltage applied to the parallel electrodes to mitigate the complexities of the electrode wiring, power supply, and interconnections ."

Wipe with a disc brush that will preferentially attract dust, then beat the dust off the brush with a high rpm spin against a wire mesh.
Coat your solar cells with gorilla glass, or corundum if you don't mind spending more money.
Current missions can last years before dust buildup kills them. Therefore most missions will be able to operate for years before ever wiping their panels, and go years between wipe events. Even if every wipe produced so much scratching that it cut cell performance by 5%, which is laughably extreme, you'd still need to wipe a dozen times to degrade performance enough to threaten the mission, which would likely take upwards of 40 years.
Summarized, every problem with trying to wipe panels is completely trivial to solve in such a way that there is zero negative impact on mission performance, and the only reason JPL doesn't wipe panels is because NASA simply accepts the risks & JPL benefits by effectively cutting probe lives short (ie giving themselves more contract opportunities).

The chinese Mars lander had some method of panel cleaning. They are trying, at least. Better than I can say about JPL.

Considering that SpaceX, like Tesla, works in 3 shifts of 8 hours, means that by 0900 tomorrow, the actuator will be swapped out and the ring back on the booster with the ship ready for restacking. Then it'll go through another testing campaign that'll likely last till 1300, followed by go/no confirm, and calls will start going out for sourcing of methane, oxygen, and nitrogen tankers. I bet they'll start the purge into late tomorrow to prep the system for flight for Saturday.

That laser communications experiment on Psyche performed its first data transfer experiment on Tuesday.

>DSOC, an experiment that could transform how spacecraft communicate, has achieved โ€˜first light,โ€™ sending data via laser to and from far beyond the Moon for the first time.
>NASAโ€™s Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) experiment has beamed a near-infrared laser encoded with test data from nearly 10 million miles (16 million kilometers) away โ€“ about 40 times farther than the Moon is from Earth โ€“ to the Hale Telescope at Caltechโ€™s Palomar Observatory in San Diego County, California. This is the farthest-ever demonstration of optical communications.
>Riding aboard the recently launched Psyche spacecraft, DSOC is configured to send high-bandwidth test data to Earth during its two-year technology demonstration as Psyche travels to the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
