I didn't. Was really fucking sceptical about the biggest gigga nigga rocket ever devised dumping it's thrust only a dozen metres or so down onto a flat pad. Doesn't matter what magic concrete you have, it's going to get fucked by thousands of tonnes worth of flamethrower. Potentially, but there is no payload at the moment and its an iterative program with incremental improvements on each vehicle they make as well as the ground systems.
There is a lot to test. Apparently anything beyond the hotstage separation of the 2nd stage is a bonus.

We don't know. But my speculation is that the engines did not shut down and/or there was an engine failure of some kind, as we saw an orbital degradation of 1km despite the horizontal velocity continuing to increase for some time. This may have led to an orbital declination, which led to FTS activating. It bears mentioning that all the engines on B9 and S25 are in the mid 150s, while SpaceX is up to the lower 400s for engine production. Generationally, if you were to argue that each batch of 100 is a generation, then B9/S25 is 3 generations behind current design and build procedures.

Engines have been generally the biggest issue for SpaceX on Starship/Superheavy, so my bet is on an engine failure of some kind.

Yes, one of the researchers who looked into it, said that the exhaust plume created Coriolis effects in the sand and water vapor cloud which was identical to behavior seen during a volcanic eruption. Vertical and diagonal ejecta from the concrete below no doubt damaged a lot of the engines, leading to structural failures, and then fuel leaks + fires did the rest.

>>15868509
I think Raptor is fine, and Starship and SuperHeavy getting up to 90km and 149km respectively, all but certifies that FFSC is the future of most efficient chem prop rocketry bar none. Electric Thrust Vector Control is also the superior measure for engine gimbal control as well.

>To summarise today:
>Booster 9 has lifted off just a few minutes after 7AM local, with all 33 engines.
>During the full ascent all 33 engines remained lit!
>Hotstaging worked with Ship 25 powering up all six of its engines ahead of staging.

I think its because of fuel slosh. Super Heavy is absolutely massive, given the asymmetric relight, it's probably that fuel basically accumulated on one side of the booster and during ignition, the engine sputtered, may have encountered gas bubbles, and subsequent engine failure due to turbo-pump blow out, triggered the FTS as asymmetric thrust to this degree would send the booster wildly off course and even 3-5 degrees at that height downwards could put the booster outside of its debris zone.

Only for landing. I believe boostback and reentry burns still uses fuel from inside the primary tanks. I know they use Methane for engine chill and relight, but they also use liquid oxygen to kickoff the preburners alongside it. If there's fuel slosh that leads to bubbles or leads to only methane flow and a lack of oxygen for preburner startup, the engines won't light and/or RUD because of those bubbles.

Who is this sort of stuff actually made for? On rewatch, looks like at least two engines failed during the booster flip, and the rest didnt turn off, or failed to relight however you look at it, so it just oversteered and they triggered the FTS.
Ship seems like the FTS triggered before SECO by about 20-30, but it's odd because the engines appeared to shutdown in a sequence, assuming they were still getting telemetry. naybe the engines shut down, and FTS didnt like something and pulled the trigger

IFT-1:
>Stage 0 failure
>Stage 1 never reaches nominal output
>Stage separation fails
>FTS fails

IFT-2
>Stage 0 water deluge fixes work
>Stage 1 performs flawlessly until separation
>Stage separation works perfectly
>Hot staging works perfectly
>FTS works perfectly

Current failures:
>Booster relight doesn't appear to work
>Stage 2 can operate mostly nominally but there is some fuckiness
>Re-entry will almost certainly run into problems

If this blew up on the pad, couldn't make it through Max-Q, or failed during separation, it would be pretty fucking over. In fact, however, we are so fucking back.

Interesting. I know that was the intended payload, but I'd be very surprised if it couldnt hit more than 95 in reality. And for Energia, it wasnt proven to launch 105 tons. Polyus was only 80 tons. This magazine is a subpar tech journal, but this guy is a good independent contributor.
Says the booster flip probably failed because engines failed to relight and went out again quickly.
Says the upper stage probably was leaking oxygen.

"Similarly successful as the Falcon 1 15 years ago" he summarizes.
Referring to the second flight of it specifically.

And then there's the actual main stream media:
https://www.spiegel.de/wissenschaft/weltall/elon-musk-raketensystem-starship-erneut-explodiert-a-25d3f0f6-ef50-4012-9bd9-7cae9dbac2f7
>"Starship rocket explodes on the second attempt briefly after launch too."
>Renewed set back for Elon Musk: The rocket system "Starship" of his space flight company SpaceX fails on its second launch attempt too. A first attempt failed spectacularly in April.
Article does acknowledge
>on the renewed test a few more mile stones were reached at least: A few minutes after launch the two rocket stages separated.
Seems to still mostly stress the explosions though.

And 2 stagers suck for anything not LEO.

It is over bf it even began, but thanks to Elon's marketing lies it won't show until 2-3 years from now where the success criteria for the flight tests will hopefullt be more than clearing the pad.

Because this is the phase where the tests are most likely to RUD.
If you know you’re going to RUD multiple times then that’s possibly over a hundred engines you’re destroying.
With this latest FTS it’s now up to 78 engines destroyed.
Do you want to RUD all your best engines?
Or, would you rather RUD all the old engines?

Technically the SLS RUDs too.
Or at least it’s a rapid “scheduled” disassembly.
None of the engines on SLS survive
So you only ever throw your best engines at it since it doesn’t matter.

Anonymous No. 15870600

>>15870505
But they won't run out of engines. They're in no danger of it. This is due to them being restricted by the frequency at which they can launch. Because of that they should be using their best equipment every time to make the most of each attempt.
