>pumping fluids to high pressure requires energy,
~3 times more energy if the pressure is 30MPa vs 9.7 MPa but it comes with less problems. The turbopump propellant consumption is ~1% in the Merlin.
Increasing the propellant consumption by 2% to get +12% of extra thrust is a good trade off.
The turbine temperature in the turbopump is very low, so the difference could be even less.

>STIC Note Starlink Maritime
>Overall, the system worked very well in all three major test events. There are countless CG missions that could benefit from the highly mobile, low latency, high throughput global internet coverage that Starlink provides. Boot-up and establishing a stable connection took approximately five minutes each time the system was turned on, the connection was very stable, throughput was generally in the 150-200 Mbps range, and latency was approximately 30-50 ms in most use cases.
>To date, the Coast Guard has installed approximately 20 systems on various assets and has a plan to have Starlink installed on remaining large cutters by end of next FY. The RDC will continue to use this Starlink Maritime system for various test events. In March of 2023 the RDC was briefed by SpaceX on their new Starshield service. According to SpaceX, âStarshield uses additional high-assurance cryptographic capability to host classified payloads and process data securely, meeting the most demanding government requirements.â It was stated that the STICâs current service could be converted to a Starshield account by submitting a âStarshield Conversion Form.â This form was submitted in May of 2023. Once the STICâs current service gets fully converted to Starshield, the STIC will create test events to quantify this additional capability. In addition, the STIC is working with third-party vendors to better âhardenâ the system for the harsh maritime environment.

> Twenty-four years after Sojourner took its first wheel turns in Ares Valles, we are on the cusp of a new era for Martian surface exploration. We have had a sustained surface presence by robotic explorers since 2004, along with over a half dozen currently operating orbiting spacecraft. We have imaged from orbit the entire surface at meters-per-pixel scales and discovered thousands of locations that preserve a record of a once habitable world from the formation of the solar system to the present day. Mars has a uniquely accessible historical archive in its rock and ice record and is the best place in our solar system to study the long-term evolution of a habitable terrestrial planet. Mars also has always occupied a unique place in global culture, and it is the only other planet in our solar system which humans could
explore (Figure ES.1).
>Over the last quarter century, the U.S. has invested in a program of exploration at Mars, enabled by its proximity leading an international effort of scientific exploration in advance of human exploration. More recently, humanityâs presence at Mars has expanded well beyond the U.S.âs current program. The U.S., Europe, China, India, and the United Arab Emirates are all currently operating spacecraft at Mars.
>As we prepare to conduct the first sample return from Mars, now is the prime time to consider "what comes next?" to ensure continuity of leadership in Mars exploration. The National Academies highlighted the importance of strategic planning of the Mars Exploration Program in the Visions & Voyages Decadal Survey Midterm as well as the 2023â2032 Decadal Survey. As recently highlighted by the Mars Architecture Strategic Working Group report (MASWG, 2020), the depth and breadth of our current scientific understanding of Mars have resulted in a diverse set of priority science questions. Answering these questions will provide

Chamber pressure does increase thrust but from increased mass flow rate not exhaust velocity. Merlin 1C to Merlin 1D was a 2% increase in Isp from a 14.5 to 16 expansion ratio and 40% increased chamber pressure. Chamber pressure would've been a small % of the 2% increase.

The reactor core is designed to run for eight or more full-power years before refueling.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horiz
>The system consists of a drilllhole which is bored from a rig on the surface into a suitable isolated sedimentary, igneous or metamorphic host rock. Drilling is imposed vertically to a depth as much as 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) and then gradually changes direction by 90 degrees to the horizontal section where the waste is destined to be disposed. After emplacement, the drillhole is backfilled and sealed.[
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_
>Deep borehole disposal involves drilling a hole about 5 km (3 mi) down into the Earth's crust. High level waste, like spent nuclear fuel, would be sealed in strong steel containers and lowered down the borehole, filling the bottom one or two kilometers of the hole. Current technology limits the diameter of the borehole to less than 50 centimetres (20 in).
So what you could do is use the rubble from the colony construction to fill in the holes.

>5 sec search on google.
You're gonna need more than that to understand the basics of rocket engines. You're looking at a simulation output of combustion temperature vs gas mix translated into Isp, not Isp achieved vs chamber pressure. Nozzle exhaust velocity in vacuum is dependent on gas temperature at the throat and the exhaust's molecular mass. You already run rocket engines so the throat takes the max temperature in nominal conditions to maximize the exhaust velocity. Raising pressure without raising mass flow rate is a no go because you'll melt the engine. At sea level, raising chamber pressure helps a little but most of the improvement is from lower gravity losses from higher thrust rather than a few seconds of Isp. What you're essentially asking is why doesn't SpaceX just run the engine hotter and at higher pressure? They would if they could.

Intubation is a process to secure a person's airway by inserting a tube into the trachea. The only meds used intrapulmonary are for codes such as epinephrine, not psych meds. Those would be administered intramuscular or preferably intravenous.

it's sad we'll not have very much insight into the newest tile-setting procedures, with star-factory now a proper building.

And you need to be more critical of your sources. Would you consider videogame info to be legitimate from a website named "vintageisthenewold.com"? The algorithm that included it on that page sure did.
One of my favorites was this word salad of a website called eclipseaviation.com that appeared to have been made using Markov chains using aerospace wikipedia articles. None of the pages made any sense but the necessary words appeared near each other and it was highly ranked in space-related searches for a time.

>You're gonna need more than that to understand the basics of rocket engines.
You miss the point badly...
>You're looking at a simulation output of combustion temperature vs gas mix translated into Isp, not Isp achieved vs chamber pressure.
You can find them, the relationships between combustion condition and exhaust M, T, gamma... then simply use the de Laval Ve formula to get a first approximation.
> Raising pressure without raising mass flow rate is a no go because you'll melt the engine.
For most large rocket motors the heat flux (cooling) in the combustion chamber is so 'low' that you need a turbopump instead a expander cycle.
> What you're essentially asking is why doesn't SpaceX just run the engine hotter and at higher pressure? They would if they could.
Raptor is just a Merlin with a different pump and expansion ratio. Everything else is close enough. Boost the merlin pressure to 30MPa and you get roughly the same thrust as raptor.
My question with other word was: couldn't a Merlin 2.0 with 20-30 MPa (and maybe turbine temp similar to turbojet engines) make sense? a simpler engine with Isp = 310-320 sec instead of 327 of the raptor.

>I still vividly remember boomer managers shouting down considered concerns from early career hires pointing out that 0.4% raises across the board, regardless of job performance, was inadequate. My former colleagues, world leading technical experts with a decade or so of experience, were unable (with two incomes) to afford to rent, let alone buy, let alone start a family, anywhere within one hourâs drive of JPL. The same managers, sitting pretty on 40+ years of seniority-based salary raises and often a modest local real estate portfolio bought up c. 1970, shrugged and conveyed that if the younger JPLers wanted to work on Mars robots, they might have to make sacrifices. Of the ~400 younger JPLers I met in 2018 and 2019, fewer than 100 still work at JPL. The exodus was so striking that a fellow JPLer made a variation of the famous âflight hardwareâ sticker saying âflight risk,â complete with a penguin! A good number went to work much longer hours for less pay at SpaceX, because even SpaceX makes sure that workers can afford housing and gives them meaningful challenges and opportunities for career advancement! NASA constantly worries about the impending âgray waveâ of retirees and the challenges of generational knowledge transfer, but whenever you hear âCOVID-related workforce challengesâ in relation to JPL, Psyche, or MSR, translate that to âweâre the employer of choice for the worldâs best aerospace engineers but weâre so stingy with pay and so neglectful of career development that somehow weâve fumbled this ball, tooâ.

>The brief summary is that MSRâs architecture, pictured below, is incredibly complicated, slow, and expensive. In addition to that, it specifically avoids solving key problems, such as Mars downmass capacity, that would both greatly simplify the mission (albeit at some cost) and also feed forward into future human exploration. The result is a series of compromises that require Rube Goldberg sequencing, no central authority or responsibility that can fight for mission success, and billions of dollars of R&D on technologies that will probably never be used ever again.

> And, like some other aspects of the Mars Exploration Program, MSR does not really feed forward into the next big step. Itâs one thing to spend $1b developing a technology which will form the backbone of the next two decades of exploration, but spending $10b on a bunch of custom one-offs that are, themselves, technological dead ends, is a very tough sell.
> Since this interview was published, NASA officially paused development of the MSR until they can determine how to put it on a more sustainable footing. For context, as of late 2023 the program had already spent $3b and signed major contracts. âSustainableâ in NASA-speak means financially sustainable, which means that the customer (Congress) still wants to fund it.

there is something about oriental billionaires and being dumb. I remember back in 2016ish Elon sat down with Jack Ma from China and nearly lost his composure with how straight up retarded the guy was

Man reading this shit makes me sad. It really is SpaceX or bust just from baroque institutional rot. Just hope it can survive a disaster or succession crisis or shit really is doomed and we will be trapped on a dying E*rth.

Nah, people who prop up China/Russia/BRICS as future anything didn't read enough history. China is still fundamentally trapped by political and demographic issues, despite having a ultra-decadent west and the majority of industrial and resource capacity on the Earth, millions of students studying at the best universities in the west, China has yet to introduce some innovating technology that they start and control that would get them leverage in the modern world. The smartphone for example was invented by an American company, its architecture still fundamentally controlled by America to this day. AI tech still being led by America, China too scared of losing control if their public gets a hold of it. Choina will just like the US, send some people in tin cans, collect the prestige then toss out their space program to deal with more pressing matters. If the west can't fix its shit (hopefully spaceflight contributing to that) we are just in for a gay dark age.

things turn around once we get destinations in space. the iss being open to commercialization has been a boon for spaceflight. it takes months or years to get a payload onto the iss because of the backlog. its the top destination for tourists. but we cant get more payloads or tourist missions to it because there arent enough ports or crew. axiom saw the potential so they're extending the station, adding more space, more ports, more crew. we need destinations in space. if you build them, the people and investments will come.
