>WASHINGTON — K2 Space, a two-year-old startup developing large spacecraft buses, will launch its first satellite this year as it attracts interest from government and commercial customers.
>In an interview, Karan and Neel Kunjur, the cofounders of K2 Space, said their first spacecraft is scheduled to launch on SpaceX’s Transporter-12 rideshare mission, planned for October.
>The spacecraft will be a technology demonstration mission for many of the components the company has developed in-house for its Mega Class spacecraft bus. “The goal for the mission is to basically buy down a significant amount of the technical risk for the satellite,” Karan Kunjur, the chief executive, said.
>That includes components like reaction wheels and computers as well as flight software. Many of those components were built at K2 Space because there was not a suitable supply chain for a spacecraft bus like Mega Class, designed to accommodate payloads of up to 1,000 kilograms and produce 20 kilowatts of power.
>“We have to build that supply chain from scratch for a satellite of our class, in terms of power and size,” Neel Kunjur, the chief technology officer and brother of Karan, said. “It’s absolutely critical to get that hardware up in space early in our company’s trajectory.”
>The company is focused on larger, but potentially less expensive, satellites that take advantage of the low-cost launch options like Falcon 9. Ten Mega Class spacecraft can launch on a single Falcon 9 or equivalent vehicle.
>K2 Space has a separate cooperative research and development agreement, or CRADA, with the Air Force Research Lab. Under that agreement, the company will collaborate with the lab on cybersecurity topics such as “cyber-hardening” and encryption.

I find it really funny that Starship can sort of do every part of Artemis. Crew/cargo to Leo, crew/cargo to moon orbit, one or two could just be Gateway on their own, crew/cargo to lunar surface and back, and a few landed on the moon could just be the entire surface base. You could build the entire Artemis infrastructure with a dozen Starships lmao. You probably wouldn't use it to move people to Leo but it might be the best option for everything else

This what the airlock will look like in the ship.
You exit the airlock into the unpressurized cargo hanger space.
You access the airlock via a ladder that goes through the roof of the airlock chamber to the floor above, which is presumably the crew space.

Its actually pretty simple to calculate the refuelling flights needed for starship. Elon says it needs 4, but he also says the payload is 150t. Real payload is a quater of that, so multiply 4 by 4 andyou get 16 whichis the actual NASA number.

Lunar Infrastructure Startup Ethos Emerges from Stealth
https://payloadspace.com/lunar-infr
>If the Apollo era was all about “flags and footprints,” Artemis’ bid for a permanent presence on the Moon will center around lunar infrastructure—the era of “pads and gas pumps.”
>Ethos Space Resources, a lunar infrastructure startup with deep ties to SpaceX, emerged from stealth today with plans to tackle this very infrastructure challenge. The company is developing technology to melt lunar regolith, producing both a flat surface for landing and take-off and liquid oxygen (LOX) for rocket propellant.
>Ethos founders:
>Ross Centers (CEO): A Colorado School of Mines alum specializing in space resources.
>Jeff Overbeek (COO): A 12-year SpaceX veteran who founded the company’s launch reliability group and helped build Falcon 9 launch sites.
>Brogan BamBrogan (VP of customer ops & integration): BamBrogan was employee #23 at SpaceX, where he helped develop Falcon and Dragon.
>In total, Ethos has 14 employees working to make its in-situ lunar resources tech a reality.
>“We are starting with the very first infrastructure on the Moon, which is a landing pad, making round trip access to the Moon reliable and affordable,” Centers told Payload. “We will build the pad and liquid oxygen from the lunar regolith to provide a place to land.”
>Ethos has successfully produced the concrete-like rock in a $2M simulated lunar environment, and has tested the material at its facility under the fiery power of a rocket’s breath. “We were surprised how well it held up. We knew from lab testing that our material was stronger than concrete, but we didn’t know how it would hold up under a hot, violent rocket flame,” Centers said.
>The company said that unlike concrete–-which can fracture and throw off big chunks of material—a rocket plume melts the glass and self-heals any fractures.
they think glass landing pads are the future? what does elon think?
Anonymous at Tue, 4 Jun 2024 22:40:14 UTC No. 16210627
>>16210624
>With successful initial tests completed, the company is now looking to scale up and address the unique challenges of performing well 238,900 miles away on the Moon.
>Ethos has partnered with Astrolab, a recent awardee of NASA’s lunar terrain contract, to facilitate lunar operations and the mobility needed to build a large pad.
>How to build a pad on the Moon:
>Astrolab’s FLEX rover will deploy several power cargo boxes, measuring 1.5 meters by 2 meters, at various locations around the designated lunar pad construction site.
>The rover will tow a heating trailer that melts lunar regolith behind it, harnessing the energy from the deployed power units.
>The byproduct is a hardened, concrete-like pad.

That sends up a tug spacecraft to dock with a satellite that's almost run out of fuel and take over as its propulsion system. One of the big problems with servicing satellites in geosynchronous orbit was that none of them were actually designed to be serviced. Sinking a probe into the main engine bell is the only real way to hard capture any of them. I think some of the major satellite manufactures were talking about common fueling port standards a few years ago, but given the lifespan of geo satellites we're not actually going to see refueling missions for another couple of decades.

>Turning to the next page’s “Spaceborne Command Post Characteristics,” one finds data pertaining to a 165,000-pound (75,000-kilogram) 12-man station and a 470,000-pound (213,000-kilogram) 40-man station. The latter was the station previously illustrated, with three mated cylinders and resupplied to the tune of 115,000 pounds (52,000 kilograms) a month. Both station options include in their functions that of “self defense.” The larger station, whose 25-kilowatt power is either solar or a redacted option, improves upon the “limited” functions of “strategic/tactical decision making” and “force control” for the 12-man station.
>Page 23 features a simple diagram of the Y-shaped command post. One of its three arms is devoted to living quarters, while another to “general” quarters and “housekeeping S/S.” The third is labeled “combat information center.” Each arm has a pair of adjustable 25-kilowatt solar panels, for a total power of 150 kilowatts. Such might have been, per caption, the US Air Force’s “SYNCHRONOUS ALTITUDE COMMAND POST.”
>MOL-world at its most advanced, then, would have put 40 Air Force crew at an altitude of 36,000 kilometers above the Earth. “Strategic/tactical decision making” would, in the event of global war (presumably not otherwise, save at the command of those earthbound), occur aboard a station equipped for self defense. This was not of course an option actually pursued to any degree beyond this concept, but it described what could still be the beginnings of the literal militarization of space.

So I'm not a rocket guy but I have a pretty urgent question, I found this image of Ariane 6 being loaded up with a supposed satellite for launch.
My question is, Is this how the actual satellite looks inside or is this just a mockup load like an article seems to refer to? Would a satellite not have this white casing over it in a non test launch?
any clarification appreciated.

paraphrased
>Q: Falcon Heavy has been delayed, how are you sure you will meet the 2023 deadline?
>Musk: I want to be clear, we are definitely not sure, pretty unsure for prior dates too. We have to set some kind of date – things go right date – and then we have reality and things don't go right in reality. Usually there are many setbacks and issues. If everything goes approximately right then this is the date, but there are so many uncertainties. This is a ridiculously big rocket, there are so many new technologies. There isn't 100% certainty we even get this flying, I think its pretty likely but its not certain. We are going to do everything humanly possible to bring it to flight as fast as possible as safely as we can.
so it was complete bullshit that MZ didn't supposedly know that there might be delays. There is always delays.

>Q: In the past two years we have seen three different designs for the rocket and five years before you plan to send these people to the moon. Have you finalized this or are you still planning the hopper test next year? Can you give some more details how you are planning these tests to get ready for 2023? Are you planning a uncrewed mission to the moon and back?
>Musk: Additional flights, we are going to do a lot of test flights. We still anticipate doing hopper flights next year. Then how well things go we will do high altitude high velocity flights with the Ship in 2020, also start doing tests with the booster. And if things go well we could be doing the first orbital flights in about two to three years. [presentation was in 2018, so 2020 to 2021]. We will do many such test flights before putting any people on board. I'm not sure we will actually test a flight around the moon or not, but probably we will do that before sending people, that would be wise.

It's not really a replacement for Hubble. It has basically no true ultraviolet or infrared capabilities. It will also spend most of it's time doing a wide field survey over half the sky, it's more similar to ESA's Euclid than Hubble. It's not clear how much time will be available for proposals, probably not much because it was designed around the surveys.
It's also unclear how it will actually perform. Not every telescope meets it's goals, and China is pretty new at it. CSST is ambitious, but time will tell how effective it is. Some other big Chinese astronomy projects have been flops (e.g. LAMOST) due to design flaws. With a space telescope it's even more difficult to make sure you have thought of everything.

The payloads that Alpha would be launching are way too small to be viable on Vulcan. Even a VC0 would be too much rocket with too big a price tag. This is mostly a sign that the government is still very interested in launching lots of small payloads rather than a few very big ones.
And Amazon did buy New Glenn launches for Kuiper. They bought twelve NG flights with the option for an additional fifteen back when they made their big block buy of Vulcan and Ariane 6 missions.

Blue Origin should launch the New Glenn rocket this fall which will have a reusable booster
Rocket Lab is making Neutron, which will have a reusable booster and it might launch next year or the year after that
Relativity Space has Terran R, which will also have a reusable booster
Stoke Space are making a rocket that will have a reusable booster and also a reusable second stage, so it would be the only other fully reusable rocket system besides Starship/Super Heavy if it works
the chinese have a bunch of companies with a bunch of rockets that are trying to create Falcon 9 clones, multiple companies have done booster hop tests and recently one company tested grid fins, so depending on how things go a chinese company might actually be the second entity showing booster reusability after SpaceX (not Blue Origin for instance)
Europe has a bunch of startup launcher companies but I don't remember many (or any?) of them even launching small sat launchers yet, so some subsequent F9 clone is still very far into the future, like in the 2030s at which point it will be severely out of date, even the current competitors like RocketLab, Relativity and Blue Origin might be too late in some sense if Starship continues to progress though who knows with BO

>This Hubble Space Telescope news broke my brain — articles said it was just fine to have <3 gyros... but that's not how gyros work.
>So I dug into it.
>tl;dr:
>• gyros tell the satellite where it's pointing
>• pointing matters a lot for a telescope for obvious reasons
>• you generally need 3 (or more) gyros for them to be useful because you need one for each axis
>• Hubble indeed CANNOT use gyros for this in the < 3 case, instead they need to use "Fine Guidance Sensors" (FGS) instead
>• FGS work basically by finding a "guide star" and locking onto it
>• but if the Earth gets in the way of that "guide star", FGS needs to "re-acquire" it periodically as Hubble orbits, and without 3+ gyros, this reacquisition is only supported by a THIRD system, the Star Trackers
>• star trackers look out at many stars with two cameras pointing different directions, then triangulate the satellite's position from there
>• but here is the real challenge — **Star Trackers also need a view of the sky not blocked by Earth**, so they are not useful precisely when they are needed most in this new operational mode
>The net effect is as pictured in this chart — a reduction from 82% to <50% in instantaneous "field of regard." Blue means they are good, red means "don't get blinded by the sun," clear means "we can't operate here anymore."

The image from of the OWL study, the 100 meter overwhelmingly large telescope. It was studied by the European Southern Observatory alongside the ELT study. It was too expensive and risky, hence the name. Recently some people proposed building such a telescope on the Moon, but it's not a serious plan. Apart from very low frequency radio lunar telescopes are really not attractive.
