On its own, a suborbital hopper is a neat thing. But the important consideration when doing a thing is the OPPORTUNITY COST of what you could have been doing instead.
What if instead of building and operationalizing New Shepard they had done something iterative, with the end goal of offering space services to customers... Imagine if instead they did their own bootstrapping program, where each step improves and expands on the previous, like Falcon 1 --> Falcon 9 --> Falcon Heavy? They could have been gradually learning how to build rockets AND how to build a space business. But because Blue's management is kind of retarded they wasted many billions of dollars and lifetimes of engineering effort on a dead end.
If there's ever a Blue Origin version of Berger's "Liftoff", I would be interested to see a histogram of staff supporting New Shepard, New Glenn, New Armstrong, Project Jarvis, etc. Any of their (likely substantial) effort on New Shepard would have been spent much better on proper orbital rockets.

The area under the orange curve should be minimized-- that's wasted effort that could have gone to other sources. It's 2024 and Blue Origin is STILL wasting time on New Shepard. Could you imagine if SpaceX was still faffing around with Falcon 1? Also, Blue's obsession with New Shepard has some interesting similarities to Falcon Air/ Falcon 5, which SpaceX pretty quickly discarded in favor of developing Falcon 9.

he's now the man who will go down in history as someone competent who snaked out at the end of his career instead of going out in a blaze of glory and trying to stay ahead of the pack.
i mean really, vulcan in it's entirety is a failure and dead end, if he had the balls to say
>"fuck this, we're building a rocket that will actually be competitive 10 years from now"

lol. Nicotine is a drug that only serves one purpose: to get you addicted to it. Does a cigarette calm you down? Well, of course it does...you're going through withdrawal like any junkie. Does it wake you up? Well of course you're going to get a commensurate dopamine kick from satisfying your withdrawal. It does nothing but trap you in that retarded cycle.
And they trick you into this bullshit by making it look "cool" and "natural" in fucking movies and TV...watch how many times the hero and his love interest always reach for a ciggy when the plot intensifies.

And that's people that are screwed helping people that are more screwed. Outside help comes way more prepared than your average citizen. That thesis that more rescuers require rescue themselves than the number of people they rescue, let's see some evidence since it's "101".

I have consulted ChatGPT and it has determined that the best black market agricultural item on Mars will be psychedelic mushrooms, based on strength, yield, space required for cultivation, resources needed to grow, and grow time. Cannabis will be inefficient to grow outside of small closet grows for personal use, at least until large fields are available for non-essential plantlife. Tobacco is even worse, given the relatively low value VS large surface area required for farming enough to be worth the effort.
The first decade or more on Mars might rely on cargo Starships delivering cartons of smokes, it'll be a while before we can grow tons of tobacco there. Once we do though, imagine the profits from shipping back Martian cigars. You may think that's stupid, and it is, but cigarfags are insane and they WILL pay far out the ass for Mars stogies.

Yeah mushrooms are a once-in-a-great-while thing, still though one season's harvest from a small growing space on Mars would probably be pretty profitable assuming some form of economy exists. I think for steady consistent growth/use you'd have to go with weed first, and eventually expand into tobacco once there's enough arable land that isn't desperately needed for food cultivation. That could take a very long time, maybe decades before it'd be profitable to grow acres of tobacco for cultivation and use on Mars. Random thought, it's the same problem for toilet paper. Eventually you're gonna want to make your own TP on Mars but that's gonna require long tree growth periods in addition to however long it takes to make Martian dirt not poison, that's decades at a minimum under the best circumstances. If Elon wants to throw some Starships at Mars on the next synod, one should just be filled with vac-sealed TP. The first colonists will thank him.

It's kind of wild. The Harris campaign could have used this to secure a big campaign PR win by going all-out and mobilizing everything and everyone possible, because the devastation is extremely widespread and would justify it. I can only assume they realized very quickly that FEMA and other organizations have become so disorganized and incompetent that such a mobilization effort is literally impossible for them to execute.
So, the baffling choice they arrived at was tell all the major networks to just not talk about it, as though that stopgap would hold for the next month and a half.

To be fair, the next Vulcan Centaur launch is likely not for another 6-8 months, which given how fucking slow the FAA moves, is inside the margin of error to not warrant a mishap investigation anyway or if there was one, it would happen under the table and FAA and ULA would nod at each other and that'd be that. >Environmental engineer Eric Roesch, whose ESG Hound blog focuses on business and sustainability, predicted SpaceX would need a water deluge system at the launchpad even before the first test flight of Starship. He was also among the first to call out SpaceX for using such a system without proper permits.
>Once the agencies had informed SpaceX it was in violation of environmental regulations, continuing with launch operations at Starbase put the company at greater legal risk, Roesch said in an interview.
>βFurther wastewater discharges could trigger more investigations and criminal charges for the company or any of the people involved in authorizing the launches,β he said.
>Roesch also pointed out that after receiving a notice of violation from the EPA, SpaceX was required to apply for a permit within 30 days. The company didnβt submit its application until July 1, about 110 days later, according to a copy of its application made available through the TCEQβs public records office.
>βTheyβve been violating wastewater regulations for years, and they continue to do so seemingly with the FAAβs blessing,β Roesch said.

Far from the official value of βone in a millionβ, rigorously estimated Shuttle risks ranged from 1 in 10 for the early flights to about 1 in 100 for the later ones. A lot of time and effort went into that improvement but the consensus is that we were lucky to lose only two.

The thrust vector control actuators and the software that controls them is NOT from Blue Origin, its part of ULAs Vulcan. I'm sure they used the same code and probably hydraulic design carryover from Atlas 5, so its pretty well mature, so is the Centaur. This quick acting software corrected for a huge, sustained, and usable thrust imbalance, and saved this payload's sweet ass.
New Glenn will have to start over with their beta 0.9 software which SURELY isn't going to land on a barge the first time, which is going to be fucking hilarious. They also have not a goddamn clue of how to reach orbit, stage, shed fairing, deploy a payload, safely dispose of upper, and a million other things, the chain of failures we will witness next month is going to be the event of the year, really.
Hate to see your winning streak broken, Chad.

Its such an easy ride for ULA, all they need to do is point the finger (you know which finger) at one of their subcontractors, and litigate with the nastiest Jew lawyers in court, with bought off judges and a "carefully selected", shall we say, Jury.
They can get their Jew Gold back, plus damages, the lawyers take half, kick the can down the road as far as schedule, with the blessings of the FAA and the military customers who are keen to overpay, and ULA itself sheds all blame for the failure. What a win-win. No wonder Tory Bruno is so cocky.
There is no way in fucking hell I would sign as a subcontractor to provide anything for a company like ULA or Boeing, because you just KNOW they will blame you, even when the design sucked and the true requirements were never clear.

The US Customs cant secure the mail, the border is wide open, the TSA rapes you to keep bombs off our planes, mostly.
I guess they could do a thorough search for contraband, in every Starship before its allowed to launch, and rape the astronauts too, with a shoulder length, gloved arm.
But they would have a harder time on arrivals, they cant intercept and search halfway, and upon return to Earth with Mars drugs, you could land in a more "friendly" country that would welcome the quality imports, duty-free, or drop the goods MIRV style in return capsules with soft landings, before landing in the US.

I get it now faggot, the booster is always suborbital, and the ship has a planned trajectory sufficient for orbital velocity, but with a perigee that intersects Earth in the landing zone. So its going to reenter anyway, even if it fucks up badly. Because safety, they haven't demonstrated an in-space relight to de-orbit, only landing burns (which I consider more difficult anyway).
The October 13th date is already proven wrong, its just some federal agencies granted restrictions regardless of the FAA political cockblock.

the FAA have passed the buck to another agency (FWS) because their latest allowable date to approve the flight changes would be late november (60 days). But that's just a maximum period, there is nothing stopping the fish and beetle service from ending that period early if everything is in order. It's like advertising a shipping date estimate - you say you as a seller can deliver these goods within x days because you have an SLA with the shipping company, but there's nothing stopping them from delivering it before the date estimate if circumstances line up to allow for that

No, started with them trying to kill Tesla by shutting down the factories for months. Then they went after Starlink expansion in California with a political statement to deny SpaceX tiny amount of money as a political gesture. Then they tried to create a union law where they exclude Tesla and give unions $13K or something in tax credit for EV cars. Then they tried to create a "EV event" and exclude Tesla and lie about the real reason. Etc etc.

Starlink denial happened as soon as the new biden FCC admin was put in charge, without a vote or even a discussion. The new admin said it didn't work and wouldn't work by 2025 and therefore decided to cancel Starlink contract by herself. They delayed Starship by nearly a year with the environmental delay before the first IFT flight. They then delayed months at a time for each additional flights. Congressmen had to get involved and ask FAA to speed it up. ONLY then did they send out people on the ground to speed up the nonsensical data gathering. And now further months of delays happening. And now congress is getting involved again in castigating FAA once again

this isn't the worst thing since politics have been a, if not the, driving force behind spaceflight endeavors for decades
but this isn't a sounding board for non-spaceflight related politics
the fact that it's Elon Musk who meets with Donald Trump doesn't mean it's on topic
