Just make a bigger rocket, have better margins and land at the launch pad with less penalty. Then you save on all the logistics of retrieval on top of having better performance. Get rid of the legs while you're at it and you save even more mass that goes right back into margin. But I guess only SpaceX can do things right and everyone else is forced to copy with a 10-20 year lag time

Theoretically, you could have them come down horizontally on parachutes and then touch down on a series of airbags. If airbags won't work there's a lot of options for landing struts and retrorockets that could probably get the job done. The tricky part is getting the booster coming down slow enough for them to work while doing it sideways so you don't need to worry about it tipping over.

That, and finding land eastward of your launch site for them to come down on. That's a problem is most places that aren't Baikonur or Jiuquan

Yes they were.

>The two nitrogen-filled rubber tires on the MET were the first tires on the Moon. They were designed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and called Experimental Lunar Tires (XLTs). The biggest challenge for Goodyear was that NASA specifications required the inner tube be inflated to 1.5 psi on the Moon surface; a difficult task. A tire with 1.5 psi on Earth has an inflation pressure of 16.2 psi on the Moon because atmospheric pressure (14.7 psi) isn't a factor there. Goodyear solved the gauge pressure problem by having NASA partially inflate the inner tube with nitrogen so that on the Moon it reached 1.5 psi. The tire maker gave the synthetic rubber tube a special coating to improve gas retention.

It means your hauled tonnage is able to be increased massively. If you are building lightweight trains on E*rth for some ungodly reason then this just improves the equation. In reality, once you can make steel, making trains is pretty straightforward. We've been doing this for like 200 years.

I'm not going to tell you no, because the data for how bad the moon dust is comes from NASA and they are incredibly gay and might be overselling the entire problem, but wheels are still 100 times cheaper and simpler to manufacture and maintain than tracks.

>We want to be clearabout ourobjectives. This is our first flight and we’ve prepared rigorously for it. But no amount of ground testing or mission simulations is a replacement for flying this rocket. Our key objective today is to reach orbit safely. Anything beyond that is icing on the cake. We know landing the boosteron our first try offshore in the Atlantic is ambitious—but we’re going for it. No matter what happens, we’ll learn, refine, and apply that knowledge to our next launch.

If Jeff really cared, he would have been active in it and pushing to get orbital launch capability instead of letting the company rot for 15 years. Where a is the subspace field density, n is the electromagnetic flux, and f1 and f2 are the Cochrane refraction and reflection indexes respectively.
