Great video. I fucking love seeing people skate abandoned buildings and old, neglected lots and whatnot. It's poetic.

You also just reminded me that Vice FINALLY started putting Rick McCrank's "Abandoned" series on Youtube. Not every episode has skating but it's a fantastic series: https://youtu.be/SPyjYQALnrE

I don't think so. they did a good job getting big names.

these guys definitely aren't cariuma skaters: cole, suciu, koston, carlos ribeiro, louie, curren, decenzo, &&, TJ rogers, Filipe Mota, Hoban, Romero, Doelling, Mason Silva, Malto, Praman, Joslin, Berger, Suljic (lol). I'm not sure about half of the remaining guys.

there's probably about 10 Cariuma guys, but I feel it could be worse with it being a Berrics event that's sponsored by Cariuma.

basically every game except for Ribeiro/Holt and Sewa/Griffin has at least one guy I'm interested in watching.

when does it start btw?

should be all you need to know. The thing that helped me progress faster was doing this at the start of every session: before trying an ollie with all the proper technique, stand on your board stationary and purposefully pop a few rocket ollies. Don't even try to slide the front foot, just make sure you get a good pop on the back tail, that you keep your upper body in line with the board and that you land comfortably. Add the front foot slide once you feel comfortable and you should do a nice stationary ollie. Pop a few more if you want, then try a moving one and you should hopefully nail it first time. This helped me most with timing cause I had a real problem with my front foot getting ahead of itself and messing me up.

Went to hit a crusty bank earlier that ranged from so steep that your nose would connect before your front wheels could, and mellowed out until it was much smaller and less steep. I don't have many tricks for that kind of thing beyond a no comply 180 to tail stall.

Couldn't land one at all so my question is do I try to pop a huge, high one and completely clear the bank on the way up, or do I skim it along the bricks like a street sweeper? I can't think of clips where other skaters do this trick so I have no idea what my best bet is.

It's a screenshot of a video my friend was taking. 3 of us were sessioning the whole thing. It's not like it takes time to leave a camera recording while you try something over and over either. If anything it's a good idea so you can see your mistakes easier.

Early days skating I whipped out of a qp wallride thing coming back fakie, tried to catch myself, my arm wound up under me dead straight and my radius and humerus clacked together so hard that it fractured the socket joint. All of my bad injuries are from transition.

i focused on just getting pop down curbs today, even if i didn't stick it, and i finally got them, maybe not consistently, but at least a handful of times. i also finally got ollies up (small) curbs, which i'd rarely ever been able to do. i found a curb on an elevation, and ollie'd over the flattest part, then kept working my way down to the deep end like a swimming pool, going back up if i didn't stick it. i'm super stoked, even if i don't have these consistently yet either. i'm just happy to have been able to have done it.

As cringe as parkour may be, the roll applies to skateboarding. It's important to learn how to fall properly. It should be just as engrained in your muscle memory / reflexes as the Ollie.

i think you're putting more thought into falling than you need to. the same way you would fall if you were to step on a banana peel or something similar is how you would fall on a skateboard. its really not a science and learning parkour and ninja rolls like that people are going to think you have autism.
Its just about trying not to hit your face or head. eventually you'll figure that shit out. Please don't spend too much time practicing falling acrobatics when you could be actually improving your skateboarding.
I normally stay out of stupid arguments in these threads but this is a stupid argument im willing to get into.

I actually used to do literal ninja rolls when I did martial arts as a teenager. The problems are the slams I'm not expecting where my wheel gets snagged or I completely fuck my position up. With the thing that broke my elbow, there would have been no way to roll out. I should have just crouched and let my thigh hit the ramp/not put my arms STRAIGHT out like I did. I still need to break some bad habits when it comes to not crouching the entire way through tricks.

That and I'm 90kg so I hit the ground hard. I'm getting better, but the elbow pad has saved me 4 or 5 times when I really slammed hard.

>>153700
Yeah, I agree. The motion is totally different anyway and you're probably going to be in some awkward mid-trick position when you eat it. You really just have to wing it.

this is so insane. do you think people only skate flatground? "slipping on a banana peel" isn't how i would describe hitting a rock/pebble and coming to a complete stop and getting pitched before a stairset/gap, missing something like a backside lipslide/front board/back tail and getting thrown backside with no real visibility behind you, hanging up on coping and preparing to eat the flat bottom, missing the lockins on a round rail so you taco/land on your ribs etc. I don't think anyone should actually spend time practicing falling, but knowing how to run out of/roll out of/take a slam in the right body part so you aren't fucked is a really important aspect of skating if you actually want to branch out in terms of what you can skate. even something as simple as learning how to break your fall with your hands/arms instead of landing on them with all of your weight to catch you can save you from a broken wrist/arm and turn it into a slight roll on the ground.

The only useful tip when it comes to bailing is to just not come to a dead stop. How you do that is super specific to the move and can mean anything to tucking and rolling onto your shoulders and back, scooting back onto your ass, running out, etc. But I think the only way you figure that shit out is by trying different tricks and having an exit plan for each one.

That and just generally getting better at balance and not letting yourself be top heavy until you're rolling away on flat.

I think the knack is to really deck it out and wait a touch later to turn so that your back wheels are already starting to roll back fakie, then letting that backwards momentum do most of the turn for you. Right now what's happening is that you're putting too much weight on your front foot and really heaving the kickturn around, so when you land it all your weight is on the front wheel, way back/down into the transition where you can't get a full pump. But then again, when you do them on smaller ramps it's harder to not do them this way. You don't need to worry about it on bigger ramps because you have much more space to pump on the way down.

I think a decent practice step is to just roll fakie on flat and see if you can kickturn back to regular cleanly enough that you don't lose any speed by not putting your front wheels down too early. It's harder than you'd think but if you can start doing them without your wheels screeching and your body getting off centred when you complete the turn, you know what to try for on a miniramp. The fakie motion will do most of the work for you, just focus on decking it out and getting the back wheels to roll fakie for a half second before turning.

Anonymous No. 154631

honestly, i feel like most flip tricks outside of the kickflip and it's variations like the heelflip, etc., are mostly easy backfoot shuvit type variations, where you don't even need the front foot. a pressure flip is just one rotation away from becoming a treflip, but is easier to learn than doing a kickflip. you can basically do treflips like you would a pressure flip, and catch them like a pop shuvit, so i don't understand what is the big deal about these tricks besides how impressive they look.

it seems like even with a kickflip, you have to contend with getting your front foot to actually flick the board quick enough under your feet, as well as time that foot so your board does level out underneath you before you flick, while keeping your back foot tucked in. just seems like the harder trick to learn, idk.

kickflips are for sure one of the hardest i see so many adult beginner skaters get filtered so hard by kickflips which is the bare minimum entry for a lot of tricks meanwhile kids that pick up skating somehow manage to have enough will to learn em after a year or so of skating. it really makes me think...i learned how to kickflip as a kid and only remember the battle faintly, prob took me about a month of consistent trying (had only been skating for maybe a year consistently), these were the days with only 1 or 2 trick tip vids on youtube so i did have an advantage but as i got older understanding tricks became so much easier, it's just about piecing the movement, weight shifting and timing together just right so i'd think being an adult beginner would help but i guess not. still not sure why young girls getting into skating the same age as teenage boys have such wide skill gaps almost always

Anonymous No. 154738

>>154734
>it's just about piecing the movement, weight shifting and timing together just right
yeah, i've been picking skateboarding back up lately, and notice it's these types of mechanics that are always involved in any trick. it's like a puzzle, like you have to figure out which direction this trick shoots your board, which feet are doing the movement, and how to pull everything together. then there is the added fear factor, of pushing your mental boundaries.

It's personal experience but I do know a good few girls who can kickflip for days and none of them wear pads (bar one who wears a whole elbow thing due to a break that haunts her). There's one girl I know in particular who is under 5 foot tall who skates a board that's way too big for her who can still kickflip it on command, with 180s and off things. But yeah, the ones who pad up aren't amazing skaters. They all seem super unstable just riding around even though they might have a decent rake of tricks in their bag.

What is this autistic post? Just jump without the board and level your feet. Make a mental note of what that's like. Then try doing the same with the board. You do the same thing with the only difference that you now have to bring your board up. And that happens by popping with your back foot and sliding your front foot up. While you're loading up for the jump your weight should be 50/50, as you would with a normal human being jump without a skateboard. If you're retarded just start by doing small baby jumps. And I say jumps instead of ollies, because what you should be focusing on is jumping up while bringing your board up with you, and not focusing on doing the ollie things, because what noobs end up doing is some weird shit with their body below the waist instead of actually jumping up. Literally start by doing baby 2 centimeter ollies as long as you're actually jumping up.

Nah, I'm definitely better than that, just a massive pussy who can't commit due to PTSD from an arm break a few years back. More like I'll clear the curb by a lot, flail mid air and bail thinking I'm going to land off balance, slip out and break all my limbs simultaneously.

>this true about ollies or tricks in general?
Yes. Popping you board is a matter of kicking the tail into the ground hard enough to make it ricochet or "bounce" off a solid surface, and being above it just enough so it has the freedom to get into the air, while also being close enough that you can catch it with your feet before it fires wildly off in a random direction.
You can technically "ollie" by sitting on a bench and kicking at your board with your feet, with no weight actually pressing down on it.

Obviously there's more to it than that (kicking with the nose to level it out and get extra height, where to keep your centre of balance and weight on the crouch, learning to keep the board straight in the air, etc), but a pop is just you jumping up and kicking the tail so it rebounds into the air in essence. This is why I really think it's a bad idea to learn how to ollie on grass or carpet.

agree with the other anon, consistency with good form, execution, strong pop on flat i would consider having a trick on lock. taking it down stairs doesn't mean much skill-wise.

i've been skating for multiple years stuck in ollie limbo. i can only ollie down small curbs, and my legs always get wobbly when i try to do an ollie on command. not like i can't pop them, but if i think about them too hard, i won't be able to. i've only now started to really try for my ollies up curbs, and i know i can do it, i just have a bad habit of either hesitating the timing of the pop, or not bringing my back foot up. even when i do, and i have a handful of times at varying heights, it's still pretty sketchy, but i think i am getting more comfortable with it. it's so strange that this is a beginner concept for most people, but it's taking me actual ages to get it down. i remember all my friends got this down early too, compared to me.

oh fuck, finally got them again. keeping your back foot over your board and committing is so hard, but you really have to trust that your board isn't gonna screw you. that's one week i'm gonna have to spend recorrecting that bad bailing habit, inorder to finally get ollies up stuff on lock.

i can't get over how much i love that skateboarding is all about leaps of faith and conquering your fears. really helps put confidence back in yourself by the stuff you accomplish through skateboarding. it's really not just about learning the tricks themselves because each trick is relatively simple in theory, just push this part of your board with that foot and your board will do an ollie. each trick is a war, an uphill battle against yourself to conquer your fears. i love it for this aspect alone.

If you can Ollie but not comfy you should be playing with baby pops, small fs Ollie's, popping off small drops and going fast doing them. You'll develop a feel for your board where eventually it just feels second nature/under you.
Bailing an Ollie seems scarier than just landing it

Anonymous No. 154961

>>154952
the fun thing about it, is that you don't have to face all your fears at once and suddenly ollie up the curb. you can start by just getting ollies over small cracks, and maybe find a curb that has a slope leading up to or down it, where you can tackle the curb at each individual elevation. it's best to even just get the ollieing over something feel down and having the board underneath your feet in the air, without instantly smashing it down. it seems like skating is a lot about trusting your board, and not smashing the invisible bug hiding underneath it.

also, you may find it easier to ollie up facing the curb, taking it at an angle, rather than head on. again, i learned ollieing down curbs before this. they just felt more easy to commit to, especially because i already know how rolling down a curb feels. any bit of progress, if you manage to get a foot, or both feet on your board, but slip out, is still progress, so don't be frustrated if you feel like your attempts are going nowhere. just take a break, or try another trick. remember to have fun, anon

I don't know why but I have a real propblem doing these. I can pop fairly high when everything goes well, but if I just want to roll along and do a tiny pop, it feels harder and I'm more likely to do some kind of shitty ghost popped rocket ollie. I sometimes wonder if I skipped a vital step with ollies, cause I went straight into popping them as hard as possible every time and never really experimented with small pops.
>Bailing an Ollie seems scarier than just landing it
yes, it is, it's fucking stupid and also takes a lot more energy saving yourself than it would to just go with it and land sketchy. If I bail 3 or 4 ollies in a row, I usually have to catch my breath cause of all the effort it takes to make sure I don't land weirdly on the board and take myself out.

It's a skill to kick your board out and avoid danger so not all is lost.
You didn't miss any steps, it just requires little tweaks in technique. Which was my point to play around with them. Over bumps your body weight shifts. Off gaps you want to be more light footed. In banks it's more upper body movements etc.. Once you roll around and can link lines together I think you'll get far more comfy quicker. Can start very mellow for each.

Also no idea why but when doing manuals the hang up factor / fear is zero. So that's a trick you can work on / towards.

For me it's THUG > 4 > 2 > 3 >THUG2 >THAW > 1. After THUG the team was split and the people left on THUG2 just could not come up with new mechanics that actually flowed into combos. Plus all the Viva La Bam/King of the Road "story" stuff was super grating if you weren't into it, and almost none of the levels were actually skate centric. When your best level is New Orleans and you have literal zombies running around, you've lost your way.

I'm actually really curious to play THP8 and THPG now. I can't imagine they're good, but maybe there were some cool ideas in there. I always thought they should have deepened off-board movement and fun ways to swap between movement types with shit like footplants and cavemans. Maybe let you hippie jump over certain rails, or sprint into a full speed throwdown.

I am shocked that no one has THPS3 as their top game. It is by far the best, although 2 is a very close 2nd. 1 is purely for nostalgia but still fun. 4 introduced ideas that would eventually ruin the series. 3 is the perfect middle ground. I don't give a shit about THUG onwards. 3 also has the best secret tape location (going through the haunted house and smashing out the window to grind on the flagpole).

Dude, just have friends and skate. It's all about (1) having fun with it and (2) actually trying at something. Who gives a shit if some kids laugh at you because you suck, you're an adult, deal with it.

>>154892
As long as you are laughing in their face then that's fine and not antisocial homosexual behavior, otherwise why care?

Ankle injuries can come back later to really bite you in the ass, I seem to almost always be rebounding from an ankle injury nowadays. Follow your doctors recommendations with physical therapy but as soon as you are comfortable start doing some of the exercises in >>155244
Regaining that stability is the most important part so focus on rebuilding ankle stability but don't overwork yourself, take it as slow as you need. Best of luck.

>I am shocked that no one has THPS3 as their top game

We've been over this already. You are wrong. 4 is the best because it's still a THPS game but has free skate and some QOL mechanics. 2 is literally the nostalgia game. It's not as future proof as 3 or 4. 4 is what's the perfect middle ground. The mechanics it introduced are all perfect with no bullshit memes like in later games.

I'm taller, more muscular, whiter, have better hair and teeth, a bigger penis, can skate better, have better taste in skate brands and board graphics, make more money, dress better, and can beat you in any THPS game, so my disagreement with your statement overpowers your disagreement with mine.

because there are about 3 people in this thread who actually know anything about skateboarding outside of video games, and every time you try to discuss something in this thread people just start an argument. slap is full of liberals but at least people there know shit about skateboarding.

you think this thread has good discussion about skateboarding? there's nothing in here. it's a desert. there's no discussion of current skateboarding events, skateboard history, skateboard gear, nothing... occassional trick tips on rudimentary tricks like ollies and 50s in transition but otherwise it's just petty squabbling. i love 4chan, i've probably been coming here for a decade longer than you, but this thread is probably the worst general i've ever seen on this whole website and i say that with no exaggeration. i don't even know why i come here.

pretty much all forums died in the late 00s when social media took over. there used to be forums for all kinds of subcultures and they were all very active.

there are still a few old internet forums that are fairly active, slap is one of them. idk how it survived.

also i should note that reddit became popular around the same time as social media and it allowed people to create their own mini forums on there. problem is that they have the upvote/downvote system which stifles all discussion. slap's 'rep' feature is pretty much the same thing.

once you get to 1000 posts on slap you can 'kook' or 'gnar' people and there is a secret part of the forum unlocked where all the faggot liberals there talk about which posters should be banned.

Then start the discussion, Jesus. Why do newfags always complain about this shit yet never do anything about it. You constantly feed the trolls no less rather than just not getting into an argument at all.
Also, odds are the people on /xs/ who actually know a lot about skating are actually skating right now that it's summer.

That happened and it split everyone apart, forums became companies idea of marketing and drawing people to their brands. Could maybe work today as there might be a niche for it but I doubt zoomies have the attention span for a slow forum.
I know a fair few that survived off the top of my head because they had a core community centred around a singular thing. Yet 90% of discussions today are off topic tangents. There is only so many discussions you can have about something before you've basically covered everything 5 times over.
