I'm pretty sure the government has slowly but surely learned its lesson about dealing with places it doesn't like. /sci/ has mostly been abandoned. About a decade ago there were a fair number of decent posts. You had the daily Putnam thread, physics generals, a couple of trip fags that were either pursuing PhDs or masters in hep-th. There were shitty threads sure (qualia and major politics threads stand out in my mind), but the ratio of garbage to decent was certainly better than it is today.

This week has been my first week back on /sci/ since I finished my M.Sc (about 5 years ago), and just look at this board today. We have like 6/7 threads just on fucking COVID and vaccines. Another half dozen on muh global warming. This place is a trash fire, I currently have 33 threads either filtered or hidden, it's worse than /g/ and /g/ nowadays is just rampant consumerism and calling each other tranny.

Bot users buy 4chan passes to avoid the captcha. That's the main reason but they won't admit that.
On top of that I'm fairly sure that /pol/ moderation was taken over by NSA agents and they've been allowing bots to poison the board.

What should happen is an AI should be trained to recognise good threads vs bait threads. Training a GAN to filter out all fake posts.

Mods won't do it because they're compromised. It could be extremely easy yet they refuse to do it. Similarly to why reddit is overrun with bots pushing tons of political angles designed to keep users engaged with bad and fake content.

The Internet could've been a place full of honest discussion but that will never be allowed by our governments.

The funny thing is there's a similar perverse incentive in various online games, such as "Escape from Tarkov". Only there's a quasi-incentive to ban bots, but to only do so ineffectually so the bot accounts have to keep repurchasing the game licenses. So in effect you only police enough to filter bad actors to buy subscriptions, and only police that enough to reap "just enough" repeat purchases from bad actors without making them give up.

Add perverse incentives to how easy community disintegration is and the internet of "today" is a botfarmed glowie-destroyed mess. Made all the worse by lolbertarian minded useful idiots.

I just realised that Runescape already showed us the truth. Majority of the paid member accounts are bots. They are created to bot to farm gold and sell it through online markets. This started small but now entire countries are in on it and are farming gold to sell online. To whom I genuinely do not even know but in the end it doesn't matter. As the bots took over most people just stopped playing because the game just kind of sucks. In the end the company is being kept afloat by a slowly dwindling user base which increasingly cheats by buying botted gold and a larger share of bots. Genuinely weird how I could've seen the end of the Internet coming from a decade ago if I had paid more attention. The company is not incapable of banning bots. It's unwilling because it recognises the cash flow from the bots is significant. More significant than trying to increase their user base which is harder to do than just managing inflation properly by carefully banning just enough bots to ensure prices don't become too high. If they accurately keep track of the bots and real users and their wealth they can actually perfectly calculate how to handle inflation to maximise their own profits. This is probably what all social media are doing now behind the scenes. I'm deeply saddened by this realization.

It's very similar to how (you)'s operate here or upvotes on reddit. They're a currency and can be inflated by bad actors up to a certain level. After it gets too bad those bad influences need to correct. I'm wondering how games do that. They must have some sort of model that tells them how many bots are acceptable. Similarly to here the mods probably must be using some sort of model to value the engagement by bots and real users. Without real users the utility for bots simply disappears. That won't happen naturally because it's a tragedy of the commons scenario. Only a limited number of threads and only a limited number of replies. But figuring that out would be figuring out how an economy works which is basically impossible or at least a very large non linear system.
I guess using AI would be perfect for this.
Create data from the past couple years and structure it based on (You)'s. But that'd require figuring out who the bot posts are and who aren't. You could filter for your own bot posts but not all the bot posting actors.
Perhaps they ignore those then. But if they do, eventually you'd end up with hubris. It'll end with bots talking to bots.
In fact. Maybe that's what's been happening all along.
So this is what'd I'd do
Get all the posts of the last couple of years. Use some sort of linear regression that determines what post gets the maximum engagement (basically older posts are less valuable, longer reply chains are more valuable, so set the value of each direct and indirect (You) to 1). Set up an LLM that creates posts with similar content that have maximum number of (You)'s. Post those posts. Feed the results back to the regression model and see what becomes the best possible post then.
