I'm currently working on a scene for a short ad where I'm trying to make a block of 3d text appear out of a cloud of smoke. Here's my prospective workflow:
>Render the text
>Use the text as a smoke domain
>Hide the text
>Generate smoke inside each letter until they are full/solid
>Change the shape of the smoke domain to a large cube*
>Render the smoke dispersing into the larger domain
>Reverse the clip
>Fade from the reversed smoke clip to the original image of the text
*Okay so this is the only step I don't know how to do. Is there a way to simply switch the smoke domain to be a different object? I don't think I could use something like shrinkwrap to transform the domain because shrinkwrap doesn't really work on things like text that have gaps in them. Is there like a reverse shrinkwrap I could use to have the text mesh expand out to a larger mesh?
I guess I should mention, it doesn't really have to be a cube I just need there to be a flat face in the direction of the camera. I can draw a diagram if anyone wants.

🧵 easy 3d workflow for indiedev
Anonymous at Mon, 28 Feb 2022 20:56:23 UTC No. 885101
I recently came across this amateur made game. It's characters are something that even a low skilled person like myself could replicate. So it inspired me. I quit 3d because I sucked at it, the learning curve was hard and I just had no motivation to do anything because I could not come up with a project.
So I want to make a game of my own. I have a few ideas but for the most part I will adjust things to the artstyle. I am looking for a workflow that is one or two steps above this game because I expect to make 2-3 models a day and finish this project in a month or two. I already have some experience with unity engine

What's the smartest thing you can think of to make your 3d workflow faster and flexible maybe like if yer gonna be using any of these freewares too https://united3dartists.com/forum/v
where the procedures and products are litterally the same but the controls are kinda different? and how would you, collect yourself, in some sort of, plans or method to be able to, speed thru all your proceses(but not with some one klix solution)

🧵 multiple materials/single UV. Blender/Substance.
Anonymous at Mon, 28 Feb 2022 04:52:50 UTC No. 884963
Welp, what is the best way to deal with this:
I made a model that needs different materials. All parts are UVed together (to a single 4096x4096 image). Now, I need the different materials to map to that single UV layout (it has to be a single UV).
Think of a flashlight: the outside plastic/inside chrome/glass lens all need to go into a single texture.
Currently, I assigned the different parts of the mesh to different materials, problem is when I take that into substance, it creates three different 4096^2 textures.
How can I tell the programs "hey, use 1/4 of the image for the chrome, 1/4 for the glass, 1/2 for the plastic"? Cutting and sewing the images in photoshop sounds like a bad way to do it.

I'm looking for old videogame softwares (PS1, middle to late 90's PC graphics) for a project. The idea is to have that retro, vintage, nostalgic feel, that's why I'm searching for a rather old and basic software. Also if there's a more modern one that could easily be used with low poly models could also work

🧵 3D VS 2D | 3D adiction
Anonymous at Sun, 27 Feb 2022 11:10:44 UTC No. 884802
So is anyone here addicted to 3D ?
In like when you have a idea you 3D model it.
2D was always strange for me and making things out of clay or legos or even sand did feel more natural. Now that I mastered blender I simply model my ideas instead of drawing them.
This is so intuitive to me. Pictures related this is what I'm talking about look at this. This is some guys planing out a mod look how bad some of these drawings are.
in 3D there is no problem like this. Not only do I see what I'm modeling from any perspective ....
I can instantly see if something works in 3D or not and experiment on the spot.
Anyone else here is the same ?

what do you do to even sort of being nimble at any 3d software? i grew up (succesfuly) building lowpoly bahamut and omega weapon, and some fmv version of weltall(though slightly different) and then not having any iq to be critical enough of my work or how to improov it
now it seems the world is growing towards 3d and computer graphics and while i know many free opensource tools to use, somehow i am not getting by to catch up with all these high poly trends or even game art quality
it s fucking retarded and frustating since everyone around me just say "start something simple" despite i finished a whole stupid human tutorial and cheated my way with lowpoly despite the tutorial asking me to use NURBS it s retarded i dont feel connected at all nor does anyone they simply parroted some quote they found from movies or whatever and not understand whatever they say lol
maybe connection is indeed what gets you around lol
