🧵 one time exposure to concrete dust
Anonymous at Tue, 16 Jul 2024 22:01:12 UTC No. 16284166
I had to grind back some old concrete. Wore a mask but obviously not the correct one because dust was behind it and I had breathed some in. It was outdoors but I was exposed for about 2-3 hours. Can you develop Silicosis after one time exposure?

🧵 Why aren't I an ant?
Anonymous at Tue, 16 Jul 2024 20:54:00 UTC No. 16284069
There are a billion ants for every one human, so statistically speaking, I should find myself being an ant rather than being a human, unless there is some reason which makes it impossible to find myself being an ant. Since I don't, this suggests that there isn't really such a thing as finding yourself being an ant. Nobody finds themselves as an ant because ants don't have any conscious experience.
I feel inspired to extend the same logic to the question of why I happen to find myself to be a particularly intelligent, imaginative human, rather than a stupid and unimaginative human. The latter outnumbers the former by a thousand times, so statistically speaking I should expect to find myself being one of the latter, but I don't. The way I see it, I'm either one member of a small subset of humans who experience godlike consciousness and the rest don't at all, or I just have a thousand times more consciousness than average which makes it that much more likely to find myself inside this body in each instant.

🧵 Hypothetical trillion dollar space telescope.
Anonymous at Tue, 16 Jul 2024 18:36:55 UTC No. 16283859
Imagine that tomorrow humanity collectively decided to work on designing and constructing a new telescope in space. Magnum opus of humanity's space exploration journey. The US spends close to a trillion buckaroos on their military yearly. Imagine that for just 1 year all of the worlds global powers pool their military budget towards this telescope. Brightest engineers, mathematicians, physicists, logisticians are collected from the masses and a preparatory 10 year education course is given. At the end of the 10 year mark hierarchy is established and work begins on the telescope. What could we produce with current day technology with limitless budget like this? Can we get detailed high resolution images of exoplanets?

My primary goals are :
>Automation
>Industriousness
>Imperialism
and i seek to achieve them at the lowest industrially acceptable (((ethical))) standard legally possible. Why does the indigenous population of every country keep trying to stifle progress at the expense of "muh morals" or "muh overbearing polution" ( the effect of which are mostly exaggerated and exploited by 'activists', media companies, and food production corporations )? Can you imagine where we'd be without the interference of these pesky luddites?

Why do clever dogs like border collies generally have much smaller brains than dumb brutish dogs such as pitbulls? Like I've seen pitbulls with human sized brains but they never seem to listen or do complex tricks like dogs with brains the size of McDonald's burgers.

🧵 Negro music goes to space
Anonymous at Tue, 16 Jul 2024 16:21:36 UTC No. 16283657
https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-
"Both space exploration and Missy Elliott's art have been about pushing boundaries," said Brittany Brown, director, Digital and Technology Division, Office of Communications at NASA Headquarters in Washington, who initially pitched ideas to Missy's team to collaborate with the agency. "Missy has a track record of infusing space-centric storytelling and futuristic visuals in her music videos, so the opportunity to collaborate on something out of this world is truly fitting." The song traveled about 158 million miles (254 million kilometers) from Earth to Venus -- the artist's favorite planet. Transmitted at the speed of light, the radio frequency signal took nearly 14 minutes to reach the planet. The transmission was made by the 34-meter (112-foot) wide Deep Space Station 13 (DSS-13) radio dish antenna, located at the DSN's Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex, near Barstow in California. Coincidentally, the DSS-13 also is nicknamed Venus.

when will I learn how to come up with those really complicated-looking bounds? you know the ones: a dozen seemingly random roots and transcendental functions slapped together in chaotic form to assert a bound on some prime divisor or some shit. I thought I'd start learning in my junior-year RA class, but it's turning out not to be what I thought it was, so is it postgrad analytic number theory or something else?
