> IN THE PAST HALF DECADE, a small publishing miracle has taken place: many books about driverless cars are available for purchase, whereas driverless cars are not. For what feels like the first time in the twenty-first century, prose has outrun product. Book-length analysis has sped past tech-sector hype. As massive companies like Volvo, General Motors, Tesla, and others spent the 2010s missing preposterously optimistic release dates for their driverless prototypes, writers conducted research and interviews. They finished draft after draft. They no doubt procrastinated, often severely, and still, still they beat the wunderkind roboticists of the autonomous vehicle (AV) realm to the marketplace.

Dumb question: I was told that black holes can have an electric charge because the electric field can extend from inside the black hole to outside the black hole. I would also think that a magnetic field can extend from inside to outside as well. So if electric and magnetic fields can extend outside a black hole, why can't the electric and magnetic fields of electromagnetic radiation extend from inside to outside a black hole?

I have this overwhelming feeling that real science is deliberately being stifled:
>world wars and few decades after - one groundbreaking discovery after another soon followed by revolutionary engineering applications of newly discovered physics
>50 years following - slow incremental developments with barely any impact on regular people lives

Supposing I have a genetically modified cat girl I'm growing in my basement. Is there a particular percentage of genetic code that I need to manipulate for age of consent laws to no longer apply to the product I have created? I would call her product since I personally worked on her gene sequencing myself and I can confirm it's neither fully human or animal. Right now I'm at about an 80/20 blend of human and cat. I can probably up that to about 70/30 but the closer we get to the 50/50 range the higher the rate that genetic abnormalities occur and the resulting product is no longer viable.
She's the 7th iteration in a series of cat-human hybrids I have attempted to produce. Her previous sisters never made it to term unfortunately. Technical oversights on my part during the gestation period resulted in me having to cull them before they could be birthed. If I can bring her to term I think I'm going to name her Septa since she's lucky number seven.

>We discover a form of covert racism in LLMs that is triggered by dialect features alone, with massive harms for affected groups.
>For example, GPT-4 is more likely to suggest that defendants be sentenced to death when they speak African American English.
Scientifically speaking, why are language models prejudiced against people who speak Ebonics?
>We find that the covert, raciolinguistic stereotypes about speakers of African American English embodied by LLMs are more negative than any human stereotypes about African Americans ever experimentally recorded, although closest to the ones from before the civil rights movement.
Scientifically speaking, why are they more racist than even pre-civil rights humans?
>How does model size affect dialect prejudice? We find that increasing scale does make models better at understanding African American English and at avoiding prejudice against overt mentions of African Americans, but perniciously it makes them *more* covertly prejudiced.
Scientifically speaking, why does making models larger make it claim to be *less* prejudiced while actually displaying *more* prejudice?
