>the derivative of x^2 is 2x
says who? everything that I studied in maths before this point made sense, if you add 2 apples to 3 apples you get 5 apples makes sense, but suddenly they give you derivation rules and tell you to memorize them when they make no fucking sense. they say that's how differentials vary, but if differentials are so small aren't they always about 0?
this point is when maths stops being about useful stuff to calculate things in real life and turns into esotheric madeup nonsense that isn't useful at all
🧵 there seems to be increase in cancer
Anonymous at Wed, 13 Mar 2024 19:18:14 UTC No. 16072613
nobody knows what is it all about an doctors are baffled
Rates of more than a dozen cancers are increasing among adults under 50 worldwide, with the number of early-onset cancer cases predicted to rise by around 30% between 2019 and 2030. Investigators are searching for explanations, considering factors such as obesity, early-cancer screening, gut microbiome, and tumor genomes. Despite increased screening and awareness, mortality from early-onset cancers has risen by nearly 28% between 1990 and 2019 globally.

🧵 What are some /sci/-approved ways to remain productive?
Anonymous at Wed, 13 Mar 2024 19:17:49 UTC No. 16072610
I'm a college student and I have a really hard time getting to work and studying consistently. I probably have ADHD but I don't want to waste my hard-earned money on a psychiatrist for a useless diagnosis. I know people who just take modafinil/ritalin when they need it but I'd rather avoid drugs/medications.
One thing I've noticed is that when people expect me to do something, or when my work is to be directly graded and compared with others, I get very motivated and productive. But alas there's no such competition/camaraderie in college and I'm all by myself. So what usually happens is that I do nothing for 3 months then try to cram an entire semester's worth of classes in seven little days before the exams.
Tl;dr: college student, can't get to work, can't study consistently, what do

if you love stats, weird numbers and counterintutive science, this is your general. Because one of the things with statistics is that nothing ever seems to be what it tries to show you on a first glance or glimpse. Doesn't matter if you are a seasoned professional, NEET or some disgruntled grad student. All are welcome.
Some people may not like it if you try to make them do your homework, others won't care and will just help you. Let's discuss theories together, ask questions and try to meme a little about this field.
in the previous thread we discussed why Julia has promise but is not delivering. How some people still use Matlab but hate it.
So, grab your favorite statistical software, dust off your textbooks, and join me in this exciting journey through the world of /psg/ - Probability and Statistics General! Let's embark on this adventure together and unravel the mysteries of data one statistical concept at a time.

Isaac Newton was a panentheist, not a pantheist.
He would sooner believe that God transcended this universe, than believe that the universe is a part of God —which may very well be true, even still. He attributed gravity to God.
But to assume there is nothing outside this universe? With the existence of math? That’s an absurd.

🧵 wtf computers cant calculate bio-info
Anonymous at Wed, 13 Mar 2024 11:52:27 UTC No. 16071858
its seems like nobody knows?
you just can't align complete genomes with a computer:
1. human genome (3 gigabytes of strings of A,T,C and G)
2. mouse genome (2.7 gigabytes of the same)
if you try to examine how much same is in these two, you must do it by hand and there must be thousands of scientists involved and it takes a decade (it has been done)
if you put both in a computer and try to do an alignment of them it looks like this:
AAAATTG (human)
ACAATTG (mouses)
computer gradually finds the best parts where they align so it can be quantified where in the genome they differ and how much (like one gene could be 99% identical and some other only 80%)
computers cannot do this if you input 3 gigabytes for one string and 2.7 gigabytes for other
it takes decades to calculate by a computer and it will run out of memory
while this looks like /sci/ its actually more like /g/ stuff
because : there is no suitable programs (where are the programmers?) do you expect a biologist codes his own software? he is not a computer scientist
a biologist should work together with a coder to create something great but it has not happened so far
