🧵 Too late to go pro?

Anonymous No. 189970

Do y'all think 22 with around 2 years of off and on kickboxing/MT experience is to late for a meaningful MMA career? It feels like fighting is my one true purpose in life, and it's all I want to do. But I also think I started too late. I have almost zero grappling experience, I'm naturally 125 at 5'9, and I don't drive so it'd be hard to keep up with work and training. Regardless, I'd probably still train just for a hobby, but I'm wondering if I should take training super serious. Or if I'm too late since there's people that's been doing this shit since they were like 12. What do y'all think?
Pic is me at my 2rd Mauy Thai smoker.

I know the japanese tourism and animation industry have a lot to thank toriyama for, but something underrated is how much the martial arts industry has to thank him for
fact is it wouldn't be nearly as popular of a hobby as it is if this show never existed since it's the thing that inspired so many kids to get involved

so ITT we will discuss all things related to our training and self improvement and helping each other
exercises, training routines, diets, motivation, etc.

~~Actually got the title fucking right edition~~

>Where do I start?
People typically start in the gym and branch off outdoors and find their niche, be it bouldering, trad, sport or a mixture of the above. Some never leave the gym at all. Ultimately it doesn't matter - just get started and enjoy yourself.

>How fit do I have to be to start? Do I have to be able to do x amount of pull-ups?
Being light, strong and flexible helps at the higher levels but climbing is open to almost anyone and is fairly intuitive to most. Even if your body is feeble and weak now, you will develop strength over time by virtue of just climbing. Climbing is a holistic sport and success often hinges upon many factors, not just strength and power, but having these qualities definitely helps when you breach into the higher grades.

>What shoes do I buy?
If you're starting out in the gym, don't worry too much: get some snug shoes without dead space that don't cause you lasting pain. Some people (such as the famed shoe designer Heinz Mariacher) recommend wearing soft shoes when you're starting out -- this makes sense since your footwork will probably suck and the increased feedback will pay dividends over time. You really don't need fancy expensive shoes when you're starting out, but certain shoe properties help send harder problems (e.g. stiff shoes for standing on tiny granite edges or soft shoes for sandstone/gritstone smears).

You just throw someone on the ground and gouge his eyes out. But don't worry, bjj fags, your chokes are also useful because both bad and good guys usually have enough decency not to go for the eyes.

Would Aikido be good for someone who is injury prone?

I have inflammatory arthritis which causes joint issues and low stamina. I did a year of wrestling in high school and know that something similar would absolutely destroy me. I see people clowning on Aikido for being ineffective but it looks so lightweight that I think I could do it. Would that be my best approach?

🧵 Wrist strenth can we make it better?

Anonymous No. 189602

So I am a blackbelt in taekwodo and started doing full contact muay thai for a while now but I feel like sometimes I can't put full power in my punches because of my wrist, sometimes if I punch to hard I feel like I'm going to injure my self so I take a lot of my power away trying to not get hurt

for those that are punchers do you do any conditioning or just keep practicing power punching until you get used and strong enough?

I have great technique so I don't think this is the problem, also my teacher told me that he have the same problem (even tho he is a young and good athlete)

🧵 Judo sucks

Anonymous No. 189557

I just wrestled with someone 10kg heavier than me. He was up against a wall
>He had old man strength, couldn't even trip him, he would wrap his ankle around mine to limit my movement
>Nothing was working, it's incredibly hard to do anything to someone resisting being taken down
>Go for a "high crotch" (learnt from: youtube.com)
>It works!
>Grab leg and put it closer to armpit then drive forward, he falls to the floor

Wow, this makes me realise how gimped and overcomplicated judo is as a grappling art

Wrestling just works.

This will not happen because no sane person would fight 31 years old Aspinall while being 37. Beating Stipe and retireing (almost) undefeated is a way to stay a legend forever, losing to a younger champ is not.

🧵 Is wrestling the opposite of bjj?

Anonymous No. 189369

Bjj fighters know submissions but suck at takedowns so they either get sprawled and outpunched or eventually get the takedown and win

Wrestlers know takedowns but suck at submissions so they take someone down, win by decision or suddenly get submitted

🧵 Bjj is better than sambo, catch wrestling, glima, sanda and lethwei

Anonymous No. 189193

Even taekwondo is better than sambo, catch wrestling, glima, sanda and lethwei

If there's no gym that teaches a martial art anywhere near you, it's not a good martial art for you. There's much higher chance your town has karate, taekwondo, bjj, judo, aikido, boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, krav maga or even slightly obscure things like freestyle or Greco Roman wrestling, kung fu or Filipino martial arts than some local stuff nobody knows outside of the country of origin. A wimpy art you can train is better than a good art you can't train.
