🧵 Questions about modeling for video games

Wanted to ask in /sqt/ but I have many questions about this. So I learned animating in Blender a few months ago and got sucked in this deep hole that making assets for games is.
So I also learnt rigging, weight painting and basic modeling and sculpting techniques.
My goals is to make mid-poly characters with detailed textures so in terms of polycount, something around 4000 faces for the complete character. My models are always going to be made for gaming so I have a few questions. Some really noobie but I’m a noob.

- For this level of details, should I straight up draw my characters and face model from the references or sculpt and retopologise on the sculpt ? I can draw so painting the textures is not going to be a problem so I can make some solid references
- Should I make the entire topology with triangles. I took a Jojo character from a Ps3 JOJO game and it’s entirely made with triangles ?
- I do all my stuff with Blender and I just heard about the polyRemesh and polyRetopo command of Maya. Are these commands as good as the guy that told me about it made them look like ? And does it work well with organic models (humans I mean) ? I don’t plan on switching to Maya but just using it for this (please spare me the blender comments)

I recently got into 3D printing and I'm a complete noob. I am learning a little bit of Fusion 360 but mostly I've been printing models I've found on Thingiverse. But god, Thingiverse's website sucks hard. It's so buggy. If I hit back in my browser it fucks everything up.

Is there a better alternative to Thingiverse? Maybe some place where the cool kids hang out? Maybe a place that has fun stuff like anime waifus or cooler/fun models to check out? Or are there any trackers related to stuff like this?

Tell me anon you know you fucked up when you said you wanted to be a 3d artist.

You should've just got a stem degree and work as a engineer programmer, nurse, plumber, electrician, doctor or lawyer then purchase all the software to do 3d in your spare time. But no, you just had to go to expensive art school when you could've went to cgpersia to get everything you need.

I just hope covid doesn't rekt your industry further. Maybe you should get that vaccine while you're at it anon. I heard most jobs won't hire unvaccinated people now.

Holy shit. I thought this thing was supposed to give faster renders. Seems to work fine for just still images but rendering animations is just as slow as ever.

sorry for staining this board with another low poly/ playstation graphics thread. I just thought it would be nice to share how I made my low poly graphics.

I use Blender cuz its free and does the bare mininum of the any software so I find the limitations to make the low poly model spawn creativity producing cool solutions to topology issues.

I dont really sculpt then retopologize. I use basic 3D shapes like UV spheres and cubes to make block outs of the main shapes of the model, then connect them.
