𧡠Mathlet needs help
Anonymous at Sun, 31 Mar 2024 10:39:21 UTC No. 16106083
I really want to stop being a mathlet but finding zero practical use cases for it I'm unable to pursue any advanced studies seriously.
I'm a low level C++ system programmer and - outside of 2D geometry - the most complex thing I remember using is fast fourier transform to pitch shift an audio signal without changing its frequency.
Machine learning is interesting but unless you're building bespoke software, relying on APIs like TensorFlow or PyTorch is mostly about setting the right input/outputs, spamming layer upon layer and that's it.
I'm starting to feel like hardcore math really is pointless.

Cherry blossoms bloom in Tokyo, 15 days later than last year, 5 days later than average
https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2
Cherry blossoms finally burst into bloom in Tokyo on Friday after heavy rain in the morning, marking the latest blooming in over a decade.
The declaration of the blooming made by the Meteorological Agency came 15 days later than last year and five days later than in an average year. Private forecasters had also expected this year's bloom to come much earlier.
Fridayβs blooming is the latest in Tokyo since 2012, when cherry blossoms were declared to have blossomed on March 31, according to the agency.
Cherry blossom forecasting is big business in Japan. As early as in January, companies start to issue forecasts for when cherry blossoms will first bloom and reach their peak.
The weather agency, which began forecasting the annual bloom in 1955, sets a government standard for observing cherry blossom trees. For consistency, the meteorological agency only uses data gathered from the Somei-Yoshino variety, which produces pale pink blossoms.

𧡠No one died from covid
Anonymous at Sun, 31 Mar 2024 05:05:43 UTC No. 16105912
I can prove empirically that no one died from covid. I do not mean to say that no individual died as a result of covid-19 infection, but rather that there were no excess deaths, and that covid deaths were simply the expected seasonal illness, old age, and general ill-health deaths, but concentrated into a short timespan.
For this analysis we are going to look at total deaths by year from Sweden. For those of you who don't recall, Sweden is a very important case study because they were the only western country who did not have lockdowns and other heavy-handed counter measures. Although they did have some trivial restrictions for a short time, broadly speaking they are what we may have expected to happen everywhere if the nations of the earth chose to do absolutely nothing.
This is critical as it is generally assumed the covid toll would have been much worse if not for the unprecedented response, while some claim the response actually caused more harm and deaths. That's why Sweden is the only uncorrupted dataset.
This chart is the actual deaths per year, raw numbers not rates adjusted to population. You can clearly see the massive covid spike, over 9000 more than the previous year - 88,766 deaths in 2019 and 98,124 in 2020. The excess was mostly concentrated into a few weeks in March-April, this was all over the news globally and was used to justify lockdowns in other countries. A grave mistake costing thousands of lives, easily avoided if they had just listened to the experts and trusted the science?

"Good evening, everyone! Great to see so many people here tonight. You look like you're ready to have a good time, or maybe you just needed an excuse to avoid doing laundry. I get it, choosing between folding clothes and literally anything else is the easiest decision I've made all week."
On Food Trends:
"And what's with all these new diet trends? Keto, Paleo, Vegan... I tried going vegan once. It was a very intense half-hour. My main issue with veganism is having to break up with cheese. I'm not strong enough for that. Cheese is the only thing in my life that's never let me down. Well, except when it's on top of a pizza that's too hot. Then it's just betrayal in every bite."
On Dating:
"Dating has changed, hasn't it? Online dating is a minefield. My friend told me to try it out, said it's a game-changer. The only thing it changed was my data usage. You spend hours swiping left, swiping right... It's like a thumb workout. And then, you finally find someone interesting, but their profile says, 'fluent in sarcasm.' Great, as if understanding people wasn't hard enough, now I need a decoder."
On Fitness:
"I joined a gym recently. Not to work out, just for the free Wi-Fi. But then I saw they had a new class - yoga for beginners. I thought, 'Why not? How hard can it be?' Famous last words. The instructor's there like, 'Now, gently move into the impossible pretzel.' I'm on the mat, trying to figure out which leg is left, and wondering if my health insurance covers self-inflicted yoga injuries."
Closing:
"Alright, folks, that's my time. Remember, life is too short to fold fitted sheets. If you take anything away from tonight, let it be that. Thanks for being such a great crowd, and don't forget to tip your waitstaff - they know what you did to those napkins. Goodnight!"
I asked Chat GPT to make me a stand up comedy routine ; and its absolutely terrible. Checkmate AI, the human element is required for actual intelligent design.
