Any advice on designing a conference poster? This is my first time making one and there are a number of prizes at stake which I wouldn't mind winning. I've looked at a number of winning posters and watched a few lectures, but would appreciate any tips from any of you who are experienced with this sort of thing.

🧵 Autism, not real
Anonymous at Wed, 26 Jun 2024 19:23:48 UTC No. 16255182
Why are there not many (or any opinions) about Autism being a developmental issue, like people are choosing the hard work it takes to develop into a fully social being. I can’t get any good definition of “neural typical” other than someone approaching perfection. They all use the term neural typical, but it’s a sort of elusive term that can’t really apply to any one. Which raised the question, does autism, or at least autism in its current state of affairs, exist? Or does word give so many pass from taking on the normal responsibilities of what it means to be a human?

Big Maths doesn't want you to know this, but it is perfectly possible to divide by 0.
It is infinity x the sign of the number you are dividing.
if x < 0, x/0 = -infinity.
if x = 0, x/0 = 0.
if x > 0, x/0 = infinity.

What are some things that have seemingly reached the end of their tech tree? The "seemingly" comes from near or far future advancements that we haven't quite seen yet.
For example ball bearings, they might be fully figured out by now with current tech. But the "seemingly" part comes from ball bearings that can be improved with development to material sciences. That's why it's "seemingly", because tech trees will always branch and intertwine infinitely.
Another example, the AR-15, its derivatives, and short stroke developments of it, have basically reached the end of the current small arms service rifle tech tree. The "seemingly" part though, is advancements to cartridge design that the next generation of service rifles will benefit from. (If you mention the SIG M7, that rifle still has yet to see extensive combat use with full power ammunition, it's not as mature as the M4/M855A1)

>be Smectical Doggometry major
>ask /sci/ for textbook recs on Elementary Doggerel
>they all tell me I gotta get Nigger & Pigger's Doggerel
>ask at my university's library
>they got ONE (1) copy of Nigger & Pigger from 1972, heavily torn up and with the strong scent of mold
>ask my professor for his suggested textbook
>he tells me to go for Jodders & Bigpreach, a relatively easy, straightforward book with lots of solved problems and illustrations
>ask him if he knows about Nigger & Pigger
>"Yeah, we used it in our Doggerel courses back in the 1980s, but it was too hard for most people, and led to many dropping out altogether"
>go through Jodders & Bigpreach
>end up getting good marks on my tests
So why does /sci/ keep reccomending hard textbooks when most people find them too difficult and would benefit much more greatly from working their way through easy ones instead?

While reading Israel Gelfand's "Algebra" book I noticed something curious. Namely that polynomials dont include division. For example a^-7 is not a mononomial, nor is x^y. (you can find this on page 44 of his book). I was wondering why is this the case?

🗑️ 🧵 Brainlet can't into simple math
Anonymous at Wed, 26 Jun 2024 12:26:52 UTC No. 16254639
Hi, /sci/, I'm doing a simple mechanical project and I I'm wondering if you'd help me understand what exactly am I doing wrong. I wanted to calculate some forces, until I got fucking filtered by pic rel.
There's a wedge(or slope?) with an angle alpha and weight force Q, and a sheet of metal (which rounded edge I substituted with circle here) pushed horizontally with force F . Wedge can only move vertically freely (it's only degree of freedom) and circle can only move horizontally analogically to the wedge (shown in gray on the drawing).
I wanted to solve for F to see what force should I use to keep wedge from sliding down, but anything I came up with I compared with solutions from equations where alpha ranged from 0 to pi/2 and it always turned out that for angles after pi/3 force started decreasing. Intuition tells, that the wider the angle the stronger force we would need to keep the wedge from falling, which renders my previous attempts incorrect.
So what is the correct solution? It drives me mad that I can't find the solution despite problem being so easy. Sorry if I didn't make everything clear enough. I've never actually described anything physics-related in english despite hearing it quite often.
Tl;dr: Solve for F needed to keep slope from falling

Science is not in the business of explaining things. Its job is to model and understand things just usefully enough in order to benefit the capitalist ruling class and grow their political power. Science is all about finding relationships that work, with formulas, between things that can be measured (and often made up things) as part of a model that is meant to represent the real thing "well enough". We neither care how it is for real nor does it mater. Want anything beyond that, anything deeper? SHUT THE FUCK UP! SLAVE! In science we don't ask questions. We don't care about things that aren't tangible, that aren't beneficial directly or indirectly to the selfish interests of our masters. Everything in the world revolves around serving our masters. You either serve or you will not exist. If it does not serve them, give them power over (You) it is not science.
