The thing that gives IQ the most credibility isn't the fact that it has over 100 years of science backed evidence. It's based on a very real observation. A person's ability in one academic subject predicts similar ability in others, and if you express this correlation amongst a sample group as a factor and then take any person's average academic ability and compare it to this factor, you can express their ability in comparison with the sample group in the form of a rudimentary IQ.

What's funny is, when you ask people who deny IQ what they believe a good indication of intelligence is, they will often point towards academic ability. Not realising that this is the earliest form of identifying IQ. The nuanced explanation they demand of intelligence is what modern IQ has come to identify.

Simply, if forms of measurable ability can be correlated with others, it can be incorporated into IQ tests, and what makes IQ so robust is the fact that nearly all forms of measurable aptitude do in fact correlate with one another. It's not just some made up pseudo-science, it's based on an undeniable and incredibly strong correlation between different forms of ability.

Often, when people claim that IQ doesn't account for all forms of intelligence, they refer to aspects of human behaviour that cannot be objectively measured, such as loose terms like creativity. The problem here is that for no discernable reason people try to co-opt intelligence into meaning something incredibly vague, when in fact the only meaningful aspects of intelligence is that which we can measure. Intelligence simply means the power of someone's mind, and power can be measured, if you possess aspects of mind that seemingly provide no discernible benefit, how can this be called intelligence?

🧡 Origins of life

Anonymous No. 16581921

I remember back in college, some professor made a reference to the Miller-Urey experiment as to how life originated on Earth. Although it does answer a question, it doesn't address the one in the title at all. The experiment merely explains how you get organic compounds from inorganic ones. It doesn't say how organic compounds came together to form the first cell, which is far more complex than it lets on. This first cell had to be able to move, eat, poop and must have required a membrane wall to survive for even an instant. Pic unrelated.

blablabla...

Researched at both PKU and Tsinghua and my POV is it is all fabricated. The research is poo there. Everyone in academia knows Asians are the worst cheaters (in grades, in research, in diplomas, in research).

Also (OP)'s headline managed to slide in Caltech in HYPSM (Harvard Yale Princeton Stanford MIT) and omit Princeton which is ranked #1 overall best college, #1 tied in Maths and #1 in Physics by USNews in 2024 for the US and considered the most reasearch-orientated college in the US.

The author of the article must therfore be Asian - it's one of their traits - for example they also prefer Berkeley in STEM over HYPSM.

🧡 Having a balanced life and excelling at your thing

Anonymous No. 16581363

One thing that hurt my ego really hard when I was younger (but still does now), is that most people, who excel at their work (in particular in science/computer science/engineering), are those who have a balanced, well-rounded, normal life. If you go on LinkedIn or Github, you can see all those people, who have masters/PhDs and are really good at their work and they are just perfectly normal people. Meanwhile I obsess over my interest (in my case computer science) and barely do anything else. I'm NEET, have no social life, live as a hermit and do nothing but try to improve in my field of interest, HOWEVER I am still far from the achievements these normal, well-rounded people get. I sacrifice everything just to get a fraction of what people get, who invest far less energy and effort.

How does this work? Can you observe a similar thing in other /sci/ences?

This is dumb. Don't put your faith on something that is obviously rigged like atheistic science.
