Hi anons! What are some good extreme sports that I can do to show everybody how cool I am? I am primarily interested in solo and group activities, not head to head competitions like MMA or whatever. What extreme sports get you the most respect and admiration?
🧵 How to turn my fists into lethal weapons
Anonymous at Fri, 10 Nov 2023 14:30:30 UTC No. 175399
Some time ago I bought boxing equipment and invited a friend to box, it was fun, but one day because of work he started to come less and less. I haven't seen him in months so now I don't want to focus my training on boxing better and hitting harder, but on hardening my twink hands (I work in an office).
I have a 44 pound punching bag (although I can put more padding in it to make it heavier).
Some weights and a homemade makiwara (I spent a whole hour yesterday punching it and it felt pretty good. Now I feel like they're going to break)
If you have any advice you can give me to help me harden my fists (or to hit harder) I would appreciate it.

Is it a big negative if you're a small guy?
Are they expensive programs in gyms?
Are they the best combo when it would come to a bar fight?

🧵 thumb pain when punching
Anonymous at Mon, 6 Nov 2023 17:52:23 UTC No. 174816
i just started boxing and i keep getting thumb pain when i punch becuase my thumb knuckle is longer than my other knuckles. when i hit it makes contact and takes all the force especially with hooks. any advice on fixing this issue? my only solution so far has been to do casting hooks instead or kind of like a half casting hook half normal so my thumb is pointed away

>Where do I start?
People typically start in the gym and branch off outdoors and find their niche, be it bouldering, trad, sport or a mixture of the above. Some never leave the gym at all. Ultimately it doesn't matter - just get started and enjoy yourself.
>How fit do I have to be to start? Do I have to be able to do x amount of pull-ups?
Being light, strong and flexible helps at the higher levels but climbing is open to almost anyone and is fairly intuitive to most. Even if your body is feeble and weak now, you will develop strength over time by virtue of just climbing. Climbing is a holistic sport and success often hinges upon many factors, not just strength and power but having these qualities definitely helps when you breach into the higher grades.
>What shoes do I buy?
If you're starting out in the gym, don't worry too much: get some snug shoes without dead space that don't cause you lasting pain. Some people (such as the famed shoe designer Heinz Mariacher) recommend wearing soft shoes when you're starting out -- this makes sense since your footwork will probably suck and the increased feedback will pay dividends over time. You really don't need fancy expensive shoes when you're starting out, but certain shoe properties help send harder problems (e.g. stiff shoes for standing on tiny granite edges or soft shoes for sandstone/gritstone smears).

🧵 MMA gym quality
Anonymous at Fri, 3 Nov 2023 09:12:55 UTC No. 174340
I plan to train in the future not just for fitness but to be actually good at fighting (maybe I will even try to compete if I discovered I have a talent for fighting). How do I know if an MMA gym is good or not?
Also I live in a 3rd world country (not gonna tell which one) and in a rural place on top of that, so the nearest MMA gym I can see from the Google Map is 30 km away. The nearest gym (around 7 km) has boxing and kyokushin karate sessions, but it is within a fitness gym so im afraid the martial arts might be just for fitness and not actually competitive fighting.

>Where do I start?

>What do you mean by 'projecting season'?
The temperature and humidity are dropping. Those slopers that felt like greasy shit a couple months ago? You're now sticking to them like velcro. You're feeling light, strong and vigorous since you've been abstaining from jerking off to those cute tomboy climbers in the folder you collected from /cg/. The time has come to do the needful sirs and make your ancestors proud by sending that V8 that you couldn't quite manage last year.
>What shoes do I get?
A common question. The simple answer is just get a shoe that fits well, which doesn't cause pain but has little to no dead space. Shoe technology gives definite advantages at the higher levels of the sport (e.g. particular heel shapes for marginal heel hooks, soft shoes for smeary friction-centric climbs or stiffer shoes for standing on marginal edges) but some Sportiva Solutions will not help you scratch up that gym v1 any more than a pair of baggy rentals. Some people (like Heinz Mariacher, the Scarpa designer) suggest softer shoes if you're a beginner since they'll give you plenty of feedback through your feet and build strength in your toes.
