🧵 Exotic probabilities

In statistics in what situations can we speak of a
- negative probability
- probability greater than 1
- imaginary / complex or other forms of non-real probability
?
Also how can we practically conceptualize exotic probability? And what are the greater implications for both physics and pure math of exotic probability?

🧵 Penrose dabbed on Dirac in '72 (maxbased)

>Most people think of Dirac as a brilliant algebraist, but he himself claimed that his motivations and way of thinking were much more geometrical than algebraic.
>Farmelo’s article contains an amusing account of how Roger Penrose tried to get Dirac to explain how projective geometry had influenced his work in quantum mechanics. Dirac gave a talk about this at Boston University in 1972, but, after giving a presentation about projective geometry, stopped before explaining the relation to quantum mechanics.
>Penrose, the moderator, asked Dirac about the relation to quantum mechanics, and in answer “Dirac gave his trademark shake of the head, and declined to speak.”

I'm about to start my masters studying marine biology. My thesis advisor focuses on larval physiology, and he accepted me even though I know barely anything about physiology. I'm just reading his published papers over and over again until they start making sense, is this a good strategy? I'm worried that I'm in over my head.
Also, do you guys have any tips for getting through grad school? I'm not looking forward to being a TA, I hate teaching

I am very high, does the following make any sense?
Proposed Experiment: Temporal Quantum Eraser
Objective
The goal of this experiment is to investigate how the timing of measurements on entangled particles affects the manifestation of interference patterns, thereby providing insights into the role of time in quantum mechanics and the nature of causality.
Experimental Setup
Photon Pair Generation: Use a nonlinear crystal to generate pairs of entangled photons (signal and idler) via spontaneous parametric down-conversion.
Path Configuration: Direct the signal photon through a double-slit apparatus, while the idler photon is sent through a separate path that includes a series of beam splitters and detectors.
Measurement Timing: Implement a mechanism to control the timing of measurements on the idler photon. This can be achieved using a programmable delay line that allows the experimenter to choose when to measure the idler photon, either before or after the signal photon has passed through the slits.

I understand trying to nail down what the minimum building blocks of existence are, that makes sense. And I understand how you'd think water is one, and maybe air and fire. But surely you can just look at earth and see it's made of many different little bits, right? And that there are multiple types of metal and wood? I don't see how you could reach the conclusion that any of those are a minimum building block.
