🧵 What fighting discipline is most practical?
Anonymous at Thu, 15 Aug 2024 18:24:41 UTC No. 207778
Kind of late in the game turning 30 soon so assume it’s best to just focus on one discipline and take lessons there. For a 6’4 man who is 200lbs and decently in shape what is the most practical fighting discipline to take up for self defense? Already have ccw but just want to be capable in a bad situation now that I have wife and kids. Involved in sports in stuff but would be a total noob in a fight despite my size. Appreciate any insight
🧵 At what point does height stop mattering in combat sports?
Anonymous at Wed, 14 Aug 2024 22:48:18 UTC No. 207682
For example Conor Mcgregor got absolutely humiliated by Hafthor, but would a 6 foot trained fighter get brutally mogged by a 7 foot guy, or a 6'4" guy get brutally mogged by a 7'4" guy? Surely at some point there's diminishing returns due to the square cube law and also the kind of genetic disorders that cause Guiness Book of World Records level tall people to die early and be very frail. So what height is the cutoff? And what height is the ideal?

~~Rappelling Edition~~
>Where do I start?
People typically start in the gym and branch off outdoors and find their niche, be it bouldering, trad, sport or a mixture of the above. Some never leave the gym at all. Ultimately it doesn't matter - just get started and enjoy yourself.
>How fit do I have to be to start? Do I have to be able to do x amount of pull-ups?
Being light, strong and flexible helps at the higher levels but climbing is open to almost anyone and is fairly intuitive to most. Even if your body is feeble and weak now, you will develop strength over time by virtue of just climbing. Climbing is a holistic sport and success often hinges upon many factors, not just strength and power, but having these qualities definitely helps when you breach into the higher grades.
>What shoes do I buy?
If you're starting out in the gym, don't worry too much: get some snug shoes without dead space that don't cause you lasting pain. Some people (such as the famed shoe designer Heinz Mariacher) recommend wearing soft shoes when you're starting out -- this makes sense since your footwork will probably suck and the increased feedback will pay dividends over time. You really don't need fancy expensive shoes when you're starting out, but certain shoe properties help send harder problems (e.g. stiff shoes for standing on tiny granite edges or soft shoes for sandstone/gritstone smears).

🧵 Breaking/breakdancing
Anonymous at Mon, 12 Aug 2024 03:19:48 UTC No. 207430
Hope to get a breaking thread going after many witnessed the kino that was the Men's Breaking at the Olympics. Some people from the live thread on /sp/ suggested /xs/ which seems fitting as breaking is one of the most physically demanding of dances.
The next big event is The Notorious IBE 2024 happening next week Aug 16-Aug 18, where you'll see familiar competitors from the Olympics battle with their crews in both group and individual battles.
There are plenty of video tutorials online if one wants to get started and learn breaking, but the best way is to find your local groups/jams as the community is very welcoming.
What as your favorite moment from the Olympics? Picrel

>What is HEMA?
HEMA stands for Historical European Martial Arts, sometimes also called Historical Fencing.
It's reconstructing how to fight with swords, daggers, polearms, and other weapons based on old European fighting treatises

Would replacing Judo, Wrestling, etc., by Mixed Wresling Arts and Mixed Striking Arts be beneficial to the Olympics?
Consider the following:
> circle arena
> out = 2 points
> knockdown/takedown = 3 points
> knockout/submission = 10 points
> 3 3 min rounds
> protection everywhere including head recommended but not obligatory
> first to 10 points, or with more round wins, wins the fight
I think it would be far more interesting if there were very diverse ways of winning points and different styles actually clashed with each other.
This also ends the notion that the Olympics ruins Martial Arts, since there will be no Point Judo, or Point Karate anymore, just Olympic Striking and Olympic Wrestling. As a bonus you could also add an actual MMA tournament with the best of both sides, but following the same rules.
It's light, and you can probably fight 3 or 4 times in this 3 week period if you are fully protected and you can win by just taking people down and pushing them out.

I used to love urban exploring so much, climbing up the side of abandoned buildings, exploring inside, chilling on the roof. I moved to a country which has a high amount of crack heads in a lot of these places, meaning I can't get that feeling of freedom through climbing since there's more to worry about than just falling. Because of this I resorted to doing stupid shit on my motorbike.
How else do you fuckers get this rush and freedom? Should I go to Eastern Europe to train hop, should I hike up a mountain, should I try shoplifting? Or maybe I should just get into drugs?
