🧵 Río The Musical
the chair nerd at Sat, 22 Oct 2022 18:28:33 UTC No. 922865
Ok so I've got a nice little weekend project that I think deserves a thread.
A friend is making a middle school musical based on Rio.2011.1080p.BluRay.H264.AAC-RARB
Because it's for a school it needs some animated and still backgrounds based on the film but because of copyright it can't show parts of the film.
As a pro bono I'm making some animated sequences using library objects and cutouts of the film that are "transformative in nature" that will be projected onto the background.
There are like 30 different backgrounds. 5 or 6 of them will be animated and the rest I'll use a combination of Photoshop and basic renderings.
>Why?
Because my mom thinks I'm nice.
>Why your renders are shit.
Because it's a pro-bono project. I ain't spending more that 2 hours per animation an/or still.
So yeah. Here is a moodboard that I made using stills from the movie. I'm not a fan of this movie but hell when you study any film and you get a glimpse on the work hours invested onto some shit you feel mad respect even if the plot is not that good.
I'll be posting some stuff.

I'm trying to learn the basics of topology and in theory I understand how to control edge flow & how to localize topo, but I can't successfully apply it when it matters.
Pic related has a few attempts to bridge together loops with varying numbers of edges/face while maintaining all quads. I figured it's possible to do this with any even number of faces but I'm a mathlet so I can't tell if what I'm doing is actually mathematically possible or if I'm just bashing my head against a wall.
I've looked at a few other models (that i'm fairly sure were manually retopo'd) and it seems like there are patterns and techniques at play that I don't understand (like a loop of 24 faces simplifies into 16, into 12, into 8). Can you point me to something that might help me understand how loops of different lengths can be bridged together, or how to tell at a glance if two loops/sets of faces can be joined without n-gons or tri's?
🧵 Blendlet, touched both 3DS Max and Maya

>longtime Blender user
>only external program I really use is Substance Painter (Blender's texturing tools still suck ass, yeah)
>have went through several 3D courses in two separate colleges
>try out 3ds Max in the first one
>modifiers are neat I guess, but the program and general workflow itself is unintuitive dogshit
>current college, get to choose between Maya and 3DS Max
>choose Maya
>find it much better than 3ds Max, but the weird ass tab system for modifiers is much less flexible compared to Blender (can't even rearrange the order?)
>workflow in general just feels more stunted and confusing, finding myself frustrated at the things Maya *doesn't* have more often than being impressed by what it *does* have
I don't mean to simply rag on other 3D applications (except 3DS Max, fuck that app in particular), or that the apps I like are "better", but I'm really starting to think that the people here who dismiss Blender as "baby's first 3D tool" haven't actually touched it in like, 5 years?
Is the Blender hate here on /3/ just tradition-enforced shitflinging, or is there genuine reason for people hating the idea of it seeping into anywhere in the industry?

Im comoketly iliterate when it comes to hardware so I have a question I need heko with. Does gearing your pc for 3d modeling/rendering also improve it for gaming? What Im basicaly asking is, can I do both on one pc or is it better two split it between 2 pcs?

I'm working with this game rip of Rouge from SA2 so I can get some model editing & rigging practice in and hopefully use it for cool low poly renders, but smooth shading doesn't seem to be working. Any idea how I can fix this without having the textures be fullbright?

🧵 Help me with a texturing conundrum
Anonymous at Sun, 16 Oct 2022 20:14:06 UTC No. 922230
I have substance painter and designer.
Each of these wall models have their own UVs for now.
I could do a smart uv and pack them all into one file, sacrifice texture quality, and then bake a procedural concrete material to them. No guarantees they come out seamless.
Or I could use substance designer to create a seamless wall material and then use it with painter. But the problem then would be with overlapping UVs if I were to import them all into substance. To avoid this, I'd have to use smart uvs and pack them all into one giant uv shell.
Sorry, how is stuff like this usually done? Is each and every single piece of my modular wall set supposed to be painted by hand? I'm a one man indie dev and self-taught so I'm not really sure how I can go about doing it.
Would really appreciate the help frens.
