I got concussed while boxing and am realising how easily I can fuck up my life over a hobby with a high-paying desk job, mum to take care of etc. On the flip side I feel like a bitch for backing down from fighting. I know that for my health’s sake I shouldn’t fight but as a man I feel incomplete without this skill. How do i deal with this?

Why do people need to be taught to do this? Isn't it just an instinctive reaction?

🧵 An 18yo male seeking to play MMA/BJJ but...
Anonymous at Mon, 29 Jan 2024 00:20:43 UTC No. 184531
Heyy...
I'm 18 yo male, livin in 3rd world country, I wanna play mma or bjj so hard... it's like addiction for me.
I left my senpai and im livin alone now, I've small online business, working all the day literally trying to expand my business... It's enough to put food on the table tho.
I remember some situations when i was a kid like 12-14 yo, I was doing triangle choke to my elder bros without knowing that im doing it haha, even my bro was telling me WTFF R U DOIN U WAS ABT TO BREAK MY NECK... DO NOT DO THAT AGAIN..
Also when i was in the third year in primary school, first week someone was annoying me then we get into a fight suddunely, he started the fight with a try to do leg kick but I caught his leg and did foot sweep from single leg, It was just a reaction...
I feel like I'm talented but I didn't notice that when I was a kid even I was telling my dad when I was 15 or 16 I WANNA PLAY KICK BOXING but he convinced me that all trainers are bullshit in my city and scammers, my dad is athelete tho... he made my elder bros to play karate and they got many medals but they quit cuz my dad was forcing them to play it.
I'm in another city now, there're some real trainers but expensive for me to pay for training...
For now I'm doing almost 200-250 push-ups in many sets everyday.
Literally idk what to do, what do u think guys?

>Where do I start?
People typically start in the gym and branch off outdoors and find their niche, be it bouldering, trad, sport or a mixture of the above. Some never leave the gym at all. Ultimately it doesn't matter - just get started and enjoy yourself.
>How fit do I have to be to start? Do I have to be able to do x amount of pull-ups?
Being light, strong and flexible helps at the higher levels but climbing is open to almost anyone and is fairly intuitive to most. Even if your body is feeble and weak now, you will develop strength over time by virtue of just climbing. Climbing is a holistic sport and success often hinges upon many factors, not just strength and power, but having these qualities definitely helps when you breach into the higher grades.
>What shoes do I buy?
If you're starting out in the gym, don't worry too much: get some snug shoes without dead space that don't cause you lasting pain. Some people (such as the famed shoe designer Heinz Mariacher) recommend wearing soft shoes when you're starting out -- this makes sense since your footwork will probably suck and the increased feedback will pay dividends over time. You really don't need fancy expensive shoes when you're starting out, but certain shoe properties help send harder problems (e.g. stiff shoes for standing on tiny granite edges or soft shoes for sandstone/gritstone smears).

Would you be willing to let a female family member, like your own mother (or an older sister) teach you how to fight, if she was already pretty good at karate/boxing/judo, etc. ?
