🧵 Texture projection / extraction from photos

Anonymous No. 894278

PBR materials and photoscanning are industry standard nowadays, but I really want to do textures the old-school way using photosourcing.

The best I've been able to find is this tool called Texture Ripper. It's over 10 years old at this point, requires Adobe Air and crashes frequently.

Is this really the only way to do it? How were artists ripping textures beforehand?

Thanks

Been trying to reach photorealism using photos as reference but Blender Cycles and the Principled shader keep giving me Mario Oddesey like lighting around the characters. Everyone says it is physical and more realistic so try to keep using it but so far I've only gotten ok results by combining the old "Unrealistic" shaders.
What could cause this "Halo" effect? Even turning specular to zero doesn't remove it. Sheen is also off. None of the other shaders have this problem, except "Diffuse BSDF"
Pic was just from googling Mario oddesey lol

I did it in Vroid free version.

But can I export it to another 3d program and make it better? Like adding accesories without the pro version of vroid.

🧵 Rhino

Anonymous No. 893746

I am playing with the quad remesher in Rhino and the results are good. There is some distortion in render preview due to the way it calculated normals that should go away once I import it in a mesh-based program. In fact that is what happens once I export it as obj and import it in Blender.

The problem is that this turns 6k into 350k faces as the subd model gets converted into a poly model. How do I export it as a subd model directly?

Ideally, I'd want find a way of exporting that preserves the crease data.

Why do anatomy inaccuracies enrage this board so much? Someone could make a really shitty hard-surface model, and no one will pay attention to it, but inaccurate anatomy will draw a lot of attention with abrasive critiques.

🧵 UE Environmental design

Anonymous No. 893561

Hey 3, newfag here.
I'm looking to make environmental art in UE5 and just picked SpeedTree up for it to make my own foliage.
I've been fiddling with UE4 for as long as 1 year making simple games, though I never dived too deep into it so I'm still an amateur.
My most troubled issue is getting the lighting and atmosphere for the scenery right. It feels like I lack the knowledge to control the most of it. Do you have any tips for that or videos?
I made my own first grass and imported it into the engine, though the grass is only lit from the direction of the light while the opposite site remains dark, this causes also weird lighting with point lights. How can I fix this?
I've been dumpsearching through all kinds of forums and looking at tutorial videos though I haven't had luck.

🧵 Unity Thread

Anonymous No. 893513

Okay this is my first thread here and I'm shit with blender but I'm fucking sick of this
How the fuck do I correctly export from Blender to Unity? Every attempt I've done has failed
The requirements are to have the root bone unrotated, or at the very least pointing up and to have the mesh unrotated and standing up
So far I've tried
>Fucking up with the export options
>Unparenting the rig from the mesh, rotating both, and setting transforms
>Some other janky shit I don't even remember anymore
Right now I ended up with the root bone apparently correct, standing up straight, making animations in the animation controller look good and fine, but the import has shit rotated and when i reset every transform to zero, the mesh ends up laying horizontally in the horizon line, and I need it to stand up right too

Also general Unity thread, maybe?

🧵 Can someone help me learn box modelling?

Anonymous No. 893422

I've been trying the whole day to make A DECENT torse. Maybe it's my coomer brain and ADD, because I have no problems making a decent butt as you can see.
For the LOVE OF GOD I CANNOT MAKE A TORSO. Even If I do, I can't get the deltoids right so it deforms well enough.

Please, I usually go from hi-poly to low poly through retopo. I wanna use this weekend to learn a more optimised approach to anatomy.

How are large fully explorable open worlds like the ones on Xenoblade Chronicles X or Genship Intact made? Isn't there any tutorial (not necessarily indepth, even a generic exposition of the workflow is enough)?
Like, do they just make 1 single huge piece using displacement map and/or hand sculpting? Do they make lots of individual pieces and put them all together at the end? A blend of the two?
